Trnt’s Unin Statin, named a Natinal Histric Site in 1975, is a magnificent Beaux-Arts landmark cvering an entire dwntwn blck. Its 850-ft limestne (石灰岩) frnt has 40-ft Bedfrd limestne clumns, while the entrance hall’s herringbne (人字纹的) marble flrs and wall-carved Canadian city names—Jhn Lyle’s special design—bring back memries f rail travel’s glden age. It pened in 1927 with great celebratin and remains Canada’s busiest transprtatin center.
Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus mixes Italianate Gthic Revival with Indian elements t make an impressive building. Designed by Frederick Williams Stevens, its inside parts take ideas frm Bmbay Schl f Art students, with very beautiful carvings and tile patterns. As the city’s transprt heart, it is full f peple—much mre crwded than Lndn r Tky’s subways during rush hur—and shws Mumbai’s lively energy.
Vladivstk Statin marks the end f the wrld’s lngest Trans-Siberian Railway. Its utside lks almst the same as Mscw’s Yarslavsky Statin. This ld tsarist-style (沙皇风格) building had its utside fixed in 1994 and inside renewed in 1996. Nearby are the city’s birthplace square and the restred childhd hme f Oscar-winning actr Yul Brynner.
Ls Angeles’ Unin Statin, with a classic Califrnia-inspired design, pened in 1939 as the largest rail passenger terminal in the American West. Serving three rail lines, it cmbines classic and decrative styles, with striking painted wden ceilings and marble flrs in its hall. Nw part f the subway system after an expansin in 2016, it als hsts film shts, weddings, and cncerts.

      B
On a Saturday mrning, I tk my sn t the Museum f Mdern Art, eager t intrduce him t the endless wrld f artistic expressin. Yet, as we std befre a breathtaking painting, my sn suddenly asked, “Dad, hw much d yu think this is wrth?” The questin caught me ff guard. Instead f lsing urselves in the clrs and shapes, we were pulled int a discussin f numbers.
It was then that I became aware f hw deeply we’ve fallen int the trap f quantificatin (量化). We measure everything: steps, calries, likes. Cnsider hw we apprach dining. D we truly enjy the flavrs and the atmsphere? Or d we immediately take a pht fr Instagram, checking hw many likes it btains, as if ppularity culd justify the experience? The simple pleasure f a meal has been reduced t restaurant ratings and scial media engagement.
One evening, as I put n my running shes, I hesitated. My smartwatch wuld track my pace, my heart rate, and the distance. But what if I ran just t feel the wind against my skin? What if I mved fr the pleasure f mvement? S I left the device behind. Fr the first time in years, I ran unburdened by numbers. There was just my breath and the punding f my feet n the pavement. It was liberating in a way I hadn’t anticipated.
That experience has made me realize that quantificatin ffers the cmfrting illusin (幻觉) that we can manage it when we’re afraid t face the unpredictable nature f life. Numbers can prvide a false sense f security in a chatic existence. We assume if we can track life, we can master it. But happiness, lve and wnder can’t be quantified. In ur bsessin (痴迷) with measurement, we risk reducing ur lives t data pints, frgetting what makes them rich.
Nw, I resist reaching fr the ruler. Life is nt abut keeping scre but abut being present whleheartedly, withut the cnstant need t prve ur wrth thrugh numbers. The things that matter mst can nly be lived.
      4. Why did the authr mentin dining experiences in paragraph 2?
      A. T criticize mdern peple’s dining habits.
      B. T argue against the use f restaurant ratings.
      C. T shw hw quantificatin affects daily activities.
      D. T explain hw technlgy enhances dining experiences.
      5. What did the authr discver after running withut his smartwatch?
      A. He needed better running shes.B. He felt an unexpected sense f freedm.
      C. He achieved better running perfrmance.D. He missed the mtivatin prvided by numbers.
      6. What makes peple bsessed with quantificatin accrding t the authr?
      A. The resistance t changes.B. The pursuit f true happiness.
      C. The pressure f scial recgnitin.D. The desire fr cntrl ver uncertainties.
      7. What is the best title fr the text?
      A. Stp measuring and start livingB. Technlgy reshapes ur lives
      C. Capture life’s beauty with camerasD. Precise measurement is vital fr happiness
      【答案】4. C 5. B 6. D 7. A

Many species wrldwide are threatened with extinctin, and the Hainan gibbn (海南臂猿) is ne f them. Once widely fund in the rain frests f Hainan Island, China, the Hainan gibbn has been pushed t the edge f extinctin due t the habitat lss and illegal hunting. Tday, nly 42 individuals remain, all living in a prtected area f just 6 square miles. Hwever, there have been uncnfirmed sightings in ther areas, and finding any remaining gibbns is a cnservatin pririty. Due t the vast search area and the species’ rarity, traditinal methds are inefficient in tracking these animals.
“It is like playing Whack-a-Mle(打地鼠) in the dark. Yu need t hit the mle accurately at the right time and place,” says lead authr Jue Wang. “If yu dn’t manage the right spt at the right time, the species may die ut befre yu even knw it was there.” “There is a huge area t search, but we dn’t have a lt f mney, s every dllar must be used wisely,” says Xueze Sng, a c-authr frm the University f Alabama.
T address the challenge f limited cnservatin resurces, researchers at Queen’s University develped an ptimizatin mdel (优化模型) t make ptimal cnservatin decisins under incmplete infrmatin. The mdel updates the existence prbability and extinctin risk assessment f the species in real time based n the data cllected frm nging surveys and then dynamically adjusts search and prtectin strategies. Thrugh this apprach, it helps fcus limited resurces n the mst crucial wrk, aviding inefficiencies and wasted effrts caused by traditinal methds.
Using the advanced mathematical mdel the research team fund that areas in which gibbns have never been recrded befre may actually be the best places t lk, which runs cunter t assumptins f traditinal search methds—species are likely t inhabit the areas where they have been previusly bserved.
“This apprach has great benefits t wildlife agencies,” says Krysten Schuler, directr f the Crnell Wildlife Health Lab. “It might change hw we cllect data n wildlife.” Schuler and Jue Wang are nw wrking tgether t bring this apprach int use in New Yrk State.
      8. What can we knw abut Hainan gibbns?
      A. Their ppulatin is rising annually.
      B. They are beneficial t the rainfrest.
      C. They are easy t spt utside the prtected area.
      D. Their knwn ppulatin may be underestimated.
      9. What des the authr mainly illustrate by mentining “playing Whack-a-Mle in the dark” in paragraph 2?
      A. Tracking Hainan gibbns requires precise timing and lcatin.
      B. Traditinal search methds are like blind attempts.
      C. Hainan gibbns are as hard t catch as mles.
      D. Cnservatin wrkers lack the skills t track rare species.
      10. What is the main functin f the ptimizatin mdel?
      A. T track Hainan gibbns’ daily habits in real time.
      B. T find the cause f Hainan gibbns’ extinctin.
      C. T predict the exact number f Hainan gibbns in the wild.
      D. T make smart cnservatin decisins despite limited infrmatin.
      11. What des the underlined phrase “runs cunter t” mean in paragraph 4?
      A. ges against.B. clears up.C. supprts.D. justifies.
      【答案】8. D 9. B 10. D 11. A
      D
Starting in early March, dzens f large, mdern white machines began mving thrugh the farmland in the Netherlands. These machines are AI-enabled agricultural rbts tasked with sptting special tulip bulbs (郁金香球茎) t ensure a healthy tulip seasn. Such a rbt is ne f many new autnmus tls making their way nt farms wrldwide.
The rbt, designed by a cmpany called H2L Rbtics, is fficially called “Selectr 180”. It uses GPS crdinates (坐标) t autnmusly drive thrugh tulip fields and uses cameras t take thusands f phts. An AI mdel then analyzes the phts and lks fr the ptentially diseased bulbs, which are ften identifiable by distinctive red lines n the bulbs’ leaves. The rbt then picks them ut and separates them frm the healthy nes t prevent the disease frm spreading.
H2L Rbtics Managing Directr Erik de Jng said their AI mdels were trained using the knwledge f specialized tulip farmers, knwn as “sickness sptters”, wh previusly perfrmed the labrius inspectins by hand. H2L Rbtics shwed the farmers a number f images, and they then pinted ut bulbs with signs f the virus. In this way, farmers helped train the Selectr 180’s mdel. As mre farmers participated, the Selectr 180’s accuracy imprved.
Machines like Selectr l80 will becme increasingly imprtant. Erik de Jng nted that these human sptters are typically lder individuals wh have been sptting sick tulips fr decades, and their ppulatin is decreasing, psing a real prblem.
Farmers glbally have been taking advantage f mdern techniques t imprve harvests with lwer csts. In additin t autnmus rbts, farmers are using drnes (无人机), satellite imagery, and remte sensrs t detect diseases r chemicals. Erik de Jng suggests systems like the Selectr 180 culd detect sickness in ther crps, like ptates r nins.
Hwever, rbts are nt a universal slutin fr all farmers, at least nt yet. Autnmus technlgy and AI require strng wireless Internet and large databases, which may nt be available in sme develping cuntries. Sme fruits and vegetables can be easily damaged by machine harvesting. Mrever, it may take time and data t determine if the earlier cst f autmatin is prfitable fr farmers.
      12. Hw des the authr intrduce the tpic f the text?
      A. By explaining a technical term.B. By describing a scene n a farm.
      C. By intrducing a natural phenmenn.D. By predicting future agricultural trends.
      13. What is the main functin f the Selectr 180?
      A. T recrd the grwth cycle f tulips.B. T water crps using GPS technlgy.
      C. T take phts f healthy tulip leaves.D. T detect and remve sick tulip bulbs.
      14. What can be inferred abut the AI mdel’s accuracy?
      A. It varies greatly based n tulip species.B. It relies n human sptters’ sharp sight.
      C. It benefits frm the wisdm f crwds.D. It functins by checking leaf chemicals.
      15. What’s the authr’s attitude twards the wide applicatin f rbts in agriculture?
      A. Objective.B. Appreciative.C. Supprtive.D. Dismissive.
      【答案】12. B 13. D 14. C 15. A

I’d hide in the art rm whenever I culd, paintbrush in hand. Since mving t Rivertwn Middle last mnth, I was the “quiet new kid”, slipping int class late, eating lunch alne, and nly ndding silently when classmates invited me t hang ut. Talking felt like mixing cntrasting paints: n matter hw hard I tried, it never wrked. But art was my safe place. I’d blend sft blues int skies r sketch the ak tree behind the gym, and fr a while, lneliness faded.
Then Ms. Hale hung a ntice: “Art Club starts Friday — we’re painting a cafeteria mural (壁画)!” My stmach flipped. A club meant wrking with peple, explaining my art, sharing my favrite waterclrs. What if they thught my wrk was bring? What if I messed up the mural? I stared at the paper until the bell rang, then hurried ut, determined t skip it.
Friday came, and I wandered by the cafeteria dr, pretending t check my phne. Thrugh the windw, I saw a girl sitting alne, twisting a paintbrush. She glanced at the ther kids by the mural wall, then lked away, scared t jin. I knew that feeling t.
Taking a deep breath, I pushed pen the dr and walked directly in. The girl jumped, drpping her brush. I mumbled a quiet “Srry” and picked it up fr her. “I’m Mia,” she said sftly. “Yu’re here fr the mural t?” I ndded, thrat tight. She mved her bag t make space fr me, eyes drifting t the sketchbk under my arm. “Can I... see yur drawings?”
I hesitated, then slid the sketchbk acrss the table. Her fingers brushed the page gently when she saw the ak tree — its branches detailed, leaves shaded in sft greens. “This is nice,” she said. Then she shwed me her ntebk filled with tiny, clrful ladybugs. I lked at the ladybugs, then at my ak tree, and said, “They’d the trunk.” Mia’s eyes lit up. She grabbed a pencil and drew a ladybug next t the ak’s rts. “See? Perfect.”
We didn’t talk much after that, just passed paints back and frth as we refined the sketch. By the end f the club hur, ur page had all kinds f ladybugs crawling up the ak’s branches. Mia glanced at the clck, then back at me. “Want t meet here early tmrrw?” she asked. I ndded— my chest light fr the first time in weeks.
