An artificial intelligence (AI) sftware has been develped that can interpret hard-t-read texts n cuneifrm tablets. It was created by a team frm Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg (MLU), Jhannes Gutenberg University Mainz, and Mainz University f Applied Sciences.
Unlike previus methds that relied n phtgraphs, the researchers used 3D mdels f nearly 2,000 cuneifrm tablets — abut 50 f which were frm a cllectin at MLU — achieving significantly mre reliable results. Accrding t Hubert Mara, an assistant prfessr at MLU, apprximately ne millin cuneifrm tablets still exist wrldwide, but many are heavily weathered and therefre difficult t decipher.
His lab prpsed the idea f develping an AI system based n 3D mdels. This new system interprets characters mre effectively than earlier appraches. In principle, the AI perates similarly t Optical Character Recgnitin (OCR) sftware, which cnverts images f writing int machine-readable text.
“OCR typically uses phtgraphs, which wrks well fr ink n paper. Hwever, with cuneifrm tablets, it's mre challenging because lighting cnditins greatly affect hw well certain characters can be identified,” explains Ernst Stötzer frm MLU.
The team trained the new AI sftware, which successfully recgnized the symbls n the tablets. “We were surprised that ur system perfrmed s well, even n heavily weathered tablets,” says Stötzer.
The researchers’ wrk represents a majr step frward in the study f ancient writing systems and pens up many new avenues fr scientific explratin. Currently, the sftware can translate symbls frm tw languages, but there are a ttal f twelve knwn cuneifrm languages. In the future, the sftware culd als help decipher ther weathered inscriptins, which, like cuneifrm, are three-dimensinal.
8.What is the purpse f the new AI system?
A.T create 3D mdels fr damaged cuneifrm tablets.
B.T discver cuneifrm tablets all ver the wrld.
C.T read symbls n cuneifrm tablets.
D.T date different cuneifrm tablets.
9.What makes the new AI system different frm previus methds?
A.It is based n 3D mdels.
B.It uses a set f OCR sftware.
C.It can recgnize cmputer texts.
D.It includes twelve cuneifrm languages.
10.What impressed Stötzer during the research?
A.The lng histry f cuneifrm tablets.
B.The effectiveness f the new AI system.
C.The influence f ancient writing systems.
D.The difficulty f prtecting weathered inscriptins.
11.What is the authr’s attitude tward the new AI system?

This way, each student experienced bth teaching methds. Every unit was taught in bth ways t different grups. This helped researchers cmpare hw students perfrmed in each type f class.
The results shwed that students wh started ff in traditinal classes did better after mving t art-centered nes. Thse wh started with art-centered classes cntinued t d well even when they went back t traditinal classes. These students seemed t use the art skills they’d learned. Teachers als reprted that many students kept singing the sngs they learned after finishing the unit. Hardiman said, “The mre we hear smething, the mre we remember it. Art might help students find creative ways t learn n their wn.”
