She put her degree n hld and mved t Ohi, taking n the dangerus jb f analyzing unstable chemicals t prduce weapns.
After the war ended there was a fall in demand fr explsives, s she made a mve t the field f aernautics, mving t Califrnia t wrk fr NAA (Nrth American Aviatin). The nly wman ut f 900 engineers, she was sn prmted t a rle which invlved calculating the perfrmance f rcket prpellants (推进剂) and designing special fuels t wrk with different engines. Hwever, never having returned t cmplete her degree, she was nt affrded the rank r higher pay f an engineer, even thugh she had all the skills and knwledge f ne.
Her experience with prpellants meant that when NAA was tasked t find a fuel capable f lifting the redesigned Redstne missiles int space, Mrgan was appinted technical lead n the prject. Natinal pride was n the line, s Mrgan set abut investigating fuels. After cuntless trials, she finally designed her wn mixture, which was named Hydyne.
Hydyne tested well with the Redstne missiles and subsequently ther aircraft (飞行器) , such as Jupiter-C rckets, prving t be a quick slutin t getting t space withut a ttal rcket redesign. The fuel made the first successful US satellite launch pssible, even if Mrgan silently slipped away frm her success, retiring t fcus n her family and leaving her chemistry career behind.

It was bvius with Pincchi. Every time he tld a lie his nse grew lnger. But fr the rest f us in real life, the result f telling lies isn’t s evident. Is it pssible that there are unseen cnsequences t dishnesty?
Since lies are carried by speech, and speech riginates in the brain, is it pssible that telling lies results in changes in the brain that are nt utwardly bservable? Psychlgists Julia Lee and Ashley Hardin wanted t find ut.
Drs. Lee and Hardin set up a series f studies t explre the questin f dishnesty, with 250 pairs f individuals. In each pair, ne was assigned (分派) the task f either lying r telling the truth. The ther member f the pair was instructed t evaluate the emtins f the lying r truth-telling partner. Each f the partners was then assigned the task f evaluating the emtins f the ther partner.
The research fund that subjects wh were asked t be dishnest were significantly wrse at detecting the emtinal state f their partners than thse wh tld the truth. Surprisingly, the small, seemingly unimprtant mments f dishnesty cluded an individual’s ability t read the emtins f anther individual later n.
T determine hw well the participants culd read ther peple’s emtins, the researchers then had the subjects watch a series f shrt vide clips. In the clips, actrs expressed a wide range f emtins in their facial expressins, vices, and bdy languages. The participants were then asked t identify the emtinal state f the actrs. Once again, acrss all the experimental studies, the researchers cnsistently fund that thse wh were tempted t, and likely did lie, ended up perfrming wrse n the test f empathetic accuracy than thse wh didn’t lie.
We live in a wrld where businesses, scial life, and persnal relatinships depend n the ability f individuals t interact well with ther peple. And t interact with them we ften need t be able t determine their emtins. As mst f us learned in kindergarten: it’s imprtant t tell the truth!
8.What is the aim f the studies?
A.T explre the mtive fr lying.B.T explain the Pincchi Effect.
C.T test if lying causes brain changes.D.T teach peple hw t detect lies.

      A.Imprved.B.Cleared.C.Mnitred.D.Weakened.

A.T learn bdy languages.B.T make faces.
C.T identify different emtins.D.T rate thers’ perfrmances.
11.What is the last paragraph mainly abut?
      A.The applicatin f the study.B.The necessity f being hnest.
C.The cmplexity f scial interactin.D.The reasns fr telling lies.

Everybdy lves a fat pay rise. Yet pleasure at yur wn can disappear if yu learn that a clleague has been given a bigger ne. Indeed, if he has a reputatin fr lazy, yu might even be angry. Such behaviur is regarded as “all t human,” with the underlying assumptin that ther animals wuld nt be capable f this finely develped sense f resentment (不满). But a study by Sarah Brsnan and Franks de Waal f Emry University in Atlanta, Gergia, which has just been published in Nature, suggests that it is all t mnkey, as well.
The researchers studied the behaviur f female brwn capuchin mnkeys. They lk cute. They are gd-natured, c-perative creatures, and they share their fd readily. Abve all, like their female human cunterparts, they tend t pay much clser attentin t the value f “gds and services” than males.
Such characteristics make them perfect candidates fr Dr. Brsnan’s and Dr. de Waal’s study. The researchers spent tw years teaching their mnkeys t exchange tkens(代币) fr fd. Nrmally, the mnkeys were happy enugh t exchange pieces f rck fr slices f cucumber. Hwever, when tw mnkeys were placed in separate but cnnected rms, s that each culd bserve what the ther was getting in return fr its rck, their behaviur became markedly different.
In the wrld f capuchins, grapes are luxury gds (and much preferable t cucumbers). S when ne mnkey was handed a grape in exchange fr her tken, the secnd was reluctant t hand hers ver fr a mere piece f cucumber. And if ne received a grape withut having t prvide her tken in exchange at all, the ther either threw her wn tken at the researcher r ut f the rm, r refused t accept the slice f cucumber. Indeed, the mere presence f a grape in the ther chamber (withut an actual mnkey t eat it) was enugh t inspire resentment in a female capuchin.
The researchers suggest that capuchin mnkeys, tike humans, are guided by scial emtins. In the wild, they are a c-perative, grup-living species. Such cperatin is likely t be stable nly when each animal feels it is nt being cheated. Feelings f righteus anger, it seems, are nt the preserve f peple alne. Refusing a lesser reward cmpletely makes these feelings abundantly clear t ther members f the grup. Hwever, whether such a sense f fairness evlves independently in capuchins and humans, r whether it stems frm the cmmn ancestr that the species had 35 millin years ag, is, as yet, an unanswered questin.
12.In the pening paragraph, the authr intrduces his tpic by____.
      A.making a cmparisnB.making an assumptin
      C.giving a cnclusinD.explaining a phenmenn
13.The statement “it is all t mnkey” (Last line, Paragraph 1) implies that____.
A.anger twards unfairness is als mnkey’s nature
B.mnkeys are als angered by lazy rivals
C.mnkeys, like humans, tend t be jealus f each ther
D.n animals ther than mnkeys can develp such emtins
14.Dr. Brsnan and Dr. de Waal have eventually fund in their study that the mnkeys____.
      A.prefer grapes t cucumbers
B.will nt be c-perative if feeling cheated
C.can be taught t exchange things
D.are unhappy when separated frm thers
15.What can we infer frm the last paragraph?
A.Mnkeys can be trained t develp scial emtins.
B.Cperatin amng mnkeys remains stable nly in the wild.
C.Animals usually shw their feelings penly as humans d.
D.Hw a sense f fairness in humans evlves is uncertain.
