Cities are where the majrity f the ppulatin lives. Als 90 percent f glbal GDP is generated in urban areas. All the essential necessities needed fr a human settlement — energy, transprt, water, shelter, fd, cnstructin materials, green and public spaces, waste management — cme tgether in urban areas.
S there’s an pprtunity t transfrm these systems. Yu can think abut getting t net zer frm a supply — side part — using renewable, r green, energy fr pwer supply and transprt — which is what I think dminates the cnversatin. But t get t net zer, yu need t als shape the demand, r cnsumptin side: reduce the demand fr energy. But we haven’t dne enugh research t understand what plicies and urban designs help reduce demand in cities. Mst natinal plans fcus largely n the supply side.
Yu als need t figure ut ways t create carbn sinks: that is, remve carbn frm the atmsphere t help ffset the greenhuse gas emissins (排放) frm burning fssil fuels
These three — renewable energy supply, demand reductin thrugh efficient urban design and lifestyle changes, and carbn sinks — are the brad strategies t get t net zer.
Hw can a city tackle demand?
Reducing demand fr energy can be thrugh efficiency — using less energy fr the same services. This can be dne thrugh better land — use planning, and thrugh behavir and lifestyle changes.

In cmparisn with the histry f Western theatre, the histry f scenic design is shrt. While the glden age f Greek theatre ccurred mre than tw thusand years ag, the intensive use f scenery in the theatre did nt begin until after 1600, and the psitin f scenic designer — the individual respnsible fr the visual appearance and functin f the scenic and prperty elements f a theatrical prductin — did nt becme a cmmnly credited prductin psitin until the mid-1920s. Rbert Edmnd Jnes is generally acknwledged as amng the first credited scenic designers, fr a 1915 prductin f The Man Wh Married a Dumb Wife.
The term scenery can include any nncstume visual element used in supprt f a prductin. In the cntext f this article, hwever, it will be defined as any nnpermanent tw-r three-dimensinal backgrund r envirnmental element that is placed n the stage s as t suggest the histrical perid, lcatin, and md f the play being perfrmed. While prperties — e.g., set prps (sfas, chairs, and s frth) and hand prps (any nncstume items handled by the actrs, such as glassware, r bks) — d the same, they generally are nt cnsidered t be scenery.
There was very little scenery used in Western theatres befre the early 1600s. While Greek and Rman plays were perfrmed utdrs in delicate and grand structures, there is little physical evidence t suggest that scenery, as defined abve, was used n these stages. Medieval Eurpean drama used standardized scenic elements called “mansins” (representatins f heaven, and s frth) t describe the varius lcatins needed in the drama that cnstituted the mst part f the perid’s plays. Mansins were ften munted in the nave (正厅) f a church, n a platfrm in frnt f a church, r in a twn square. They were als used in cmbinatin with pageant wagns (盛会马车), usually held between ne and three mansins, and were pulled frm lcatin t lcatin, and were arranged t create the apprpriate setting.

At mre than 110 millin years ld, a fssil (化石) unearthed in Brazil is the ldest undubted ant fssil ever discvered. The finding adds t evidence that the first ants develped n the supercntinent f Gndwana in the suthern hemisphere (半球) befre spreading acrss the rest f the wrld.
“We have evidence they were in Suth America, they were in Gndwana, during their early develpment,” says Andersn Lepec at the University f Sa Paul in Brazil. Lepec came acrss the fssil in a large cllectin delivered t the university’s zlgical museum. The specimens all came frm the Crat Frmatin in nrth-east Brazil, which frmed during the Lwer Cretaceus Perid. He immediately suspected this fssil was frm an extinct grup f insects called hell ants. “That head shape was similar t ne species we fund in Burmese amber,” he says. “This gave me the hint.”
Hell ants are particularly interesting because they represent a transitinal “stem lineage”, says Lepec — they are mre clsely related t the wasp-like cmmn ancestr f all ants than t the species alive tday, althugh they did have ant-like scial structures.
When the fssil was 3D scanned, this revealed ther characteristics that identified it as a hell ant. Fr instance, it had frklift-like mandibles (颚) that may have enabled it t catch ther insects. In fact, it is this feature that gave the hell ant grup its name.
The researchers named the new hell ant species Vulcanidris cratensis, in recgnitin f the Brazilian entmlgist Maria Aparecida Vulcan. Based n the rck in which it was fund, the researchers suspect the fssil is abut 113 millin years ld, 13 millin years lder than the previus ldest knwn ant fssil.
“Befre ur new fssil, the earliest ants knwn as fssils were frm France and Myanmar,” says Lepec. Finding such an ancient hell ant in Suth America aligns with genmic evidence suggesting ants first appeared in the suthern hemisphere befre getting thrughut much f the rest f the wrld and establishing the dminant eclgical rle they maintain tday.
12. What des the underlined wrd “hint” in paragraph 2 mean?
A. Praise.B. Signal.C. Warning.D. Instructin.

A. T hnr a scientist.B. T shw its special shape.
C. T mark its discvery place.D. T reflect its living habit.
15. What can be a suitable title fr the text?
A. The Histry f AntsB. A Newly-named Ant Species
C. Ancient Ants’ Scial StructuresD. Oldest Ant Fssil Fund in Brazil
