The first time I went tang dancing, I was t intimidated t get n the flr. I remembered a similar experience at a village wedding n the Greek island f Crete, where I stayed n the sidelines because the fancy ftwrk cnfused me.
Mments later, an lder wman, reading my mind, sat beside me and said, "If yu jin the dancing, yu will feel flish. If yu d nt, yu will als feel flish. S, why nt dance?" Last year, the wrld lst mre frests than ever befre, with fires being the biggest cause. Land clearing fr farming and ther human activities als played majr rles. The results are very wrrying fr the planet, which relies n frests t help fight climate change.
Researchers frm the University f Maryland and the Wrld Resurces Institute (WRI) reprted that the wrld lst abut 25,870 square miles f primary rainfrest last year. In 2021, the leaders f mre than 120 cuntries signed an agreement t stp frest lss and increase frest area by 2030. Sadly, that is nt happening. 17 f the 20 cuntries with the mst primary frests are lsing mre frests nw than when they signed the agreement.
Brazil, with the mst trpical (热带的) rainfrest, suffered the greatest lss, accunting fr 42% f the wrld's primary frest lss. Brazil has been suffering frm its wrst drught ever. Hwever, nt all the news is bad. Indnesia reduced its primary frest lss by 11%, partly due t gvernment effrts t prevent fires. Malaysia als saw a 13% drp in frest lss. T meet the gal f ending frest lss by 2030, the wrld needs t lwer its frest lss by 20% every year. Brains are usually cnsidered a bacteria - free zne. But that's nt the case fr sme fish. Wild and lab - grwn salmnids (鲑科鱼) harbr active micrbial (微生物的) cmmunities in their brains. Mst f the bacteria fund in brains f lab - reared rainbw trut (虹鳟) appear t have initially cme frm their bld and guts. That suggests that micrbes frm ther parts f the bdy can crss the bld - brain barrier. That layer f cells lies between brain cells and bld vessels, letting xygen and nutrients in and keeping bacteria ut.
Micrbial infectin f animal brains has usually been linked t disease. Fr instance, brain - infiltrating micrbes may be linked with Alzheimer's disease in peple. But brain bacteria aren't necessarily bad news fr fish. "The bacteria might even help rainbw trut pick up n micrbial cues in the envirnment, aiding the migratry fish in navigating (航行) rivers," says Irene Salinas, an immunlgist studying fish.
Salinas' team searched fr bacteria in brain samples frm rainbw trut and grew 54 types f bacteria frm lab - reared fish. That suggests that fish brains have a micrbial cmmunity. Genetic analyses als revealed signs that bacteria adapt t living in the brain and crss the bld - brain barrier.
While brain bacteria might nt always be harmful t fish, there are exceptins. Fr example, the brains f aging Chink salmn nearing death tend t have higher levels f bacteria cmpared t thse f yunger fish. These aging brains als shw a buildup f amylid - beta, a prtein linked t Alzheimer's disease in humans. This suggests that, similar t gut micrbes, brain bacteria can ptentially g ut f balance, leading t health prblems.
The new findings pen up questins abut whether nly fish have bacteria in the brain. Other animals may have brains chck - full f micrbes, t. "When it cmes t fish, there's
lts f diversity f different fishes n the planet,” Salinas says. “Maybe deep - sea fish r sharks have unique brain bacteria that help them live far belw the surface.”
32. What functin des the bld - brain barrier play in salmnids?
A. T keep the brain healthy.B. T prduce bacteria.
C. T prvide nutrients.D. T blck xygen.
33. In which way can the brain bacteria help rainbw trut?
A. Preventing infectin.B. Bsting grwth.C. Cntrlling disease.D. Finding the way.
34. What des the example f the aging Chink salmn imply?
A. Aging fish have few brain bacteria.
B. Yung fish lack enugh brain bacteria.
C. Brain bacteria can cause health prblems.
D. Brain bacteria are always beneficial t fish.
35. What can be inferred frm the last paragraph?
A. Brain bacteria f the sea life are the same.
B. Mre research n animals' brain bacteria is needed.
C. Many animals' brains are full f different micrbes.
D. Salinas will study why fish can live far belw the surface.
