Yasmin Alkashef grew up in Egypt learning English and Arabic. Frm a very yung age, she lved languages. In furth grade, she began learning French."I was always very gd at these classes, and I enjyed them very much," Alkashef says. Her lve f languages cntinued int high schl, where she began training t be a translatr. Nw she interprets and translates fr peple prfessinally.Alkashef has been a translatr fr 20 years. She's a member f the American Translatrs Assciatin bard f directrs, and is a certified Arabic-t-English translatr,a certified curt interpreter, and a cnference interpreter.
Mst interpreters and translatrs are freelancers, which means they're nt emplyed as staff fr an rganizatin r cmpany. "Being a freelancer is always fun, because every week is different, and the tpics are always different," she says. One day yu are translating a dcument abut clean water, and the next day, yu are in curt, interpreting a cmplicated case. The fllwing day, yu're at a cnference abut internatinal peace, she adds.
Alkashef has interpreted at curt cases and film festivals, and at plitical events with peple such as presidents and kings. The wrk can be exciting. "Hwever, interpreters speak in the first persn," Alkashef says. "When they say smething terrible, yur subcnscius(潜意识)des nt understand it is smebdy else's stry. S interpreters cme hme with this burden, and they have t d self-care t take care f their mental health.”
Alkashef is mst grateful that thrugh her wrk, she's able t help thers."It's mre than just the wrds. The interpreter brings an understanding f the cultures, f histry,f a lt f things," she says. Over the years, Alkashef has learned that cultures and languages are nt as different frm ne anther as they might seem.“We share mre than what we think," she says. Her advice t wuld-be interpreters and translatrs is t wrk hard cnstantly, learn as much as yu can, and keep up with technlgy, especially with the develpment f AI.

A new study finds smething special abut Australia's crcdiles(鳄鱼),which is related t climate change.
"On ht nights, the water stays warm, but the air cls dwn. S, crcdiles will mve nt the river bank t cl ff," the study writes."During the day, they might dive dwn really deep where it's a bit cler. Or they might lie n the bank in the shade."Researchers tracked 203 crcdiles at the Steve Irwin Wildlife Reserve in nrthern Queensland t test whether these strategies help during extreme heat. They cllected data n crcdile bdy temperature, daily distance traveled and diving behavir, then cmpared that t lcal temperatures. Ultimately, they discvered mre.
Frm 2008 t 2023, average air temperatures increased by between 0.14 and 0.54° F-and the animals' average bdy temperature als rse during that perid, and their perfrmance decreases.
“During very ht years, we're finding that their bdy temperatures are starting t reach pints where we knw their behavir is impacted," says study lead authr Kaitlin Barham, a wildlife eclgy researcher. At the httest temperatures, crcdiles spent less time diving and mre time perfrming cling behavirs. Since crcdiles are hunters that rely n remaining underwater fr the element f surprise, this can affect their capacity t catch their fd."Every minute they're up n the bank trying t cl dwn is a minute they're nt spending traveling, reprducing r lking fr fd,”Barham adds.
The current research fcused n the nrthern part f the crcdiles' range, and the scientists wuld like t see mre analysis n the suthern parts."It wuld be really interesting t see hw crcdiles that live at the suthern part f their range in Australia, where they're a bit cler, deal with similar heat waves,” says Barham t Imma Perfett at Csms Magazine.
S far, scientists haven't uncvered any evidence that the nrthern crcdiles are mving suth t seek cler temperatures. "We hpe they have the capacity t defendthemselves against the wrst f the heat ur current climate thrws at them, withut leaving their lcal river system," the team writes.
28. Why did researchers track the 203 crcdiles riginally?
A. T cllect their bdy temperatures.B. T assess their cling appraches.
C. T study their physical cnditins.D. T mnitr their diving behavirs.
29. What's the result f crcdiles' shrter dive times?
A. Their reprductin rate falls.B. Their travel distance increases.
C. Their hunting ability is affected.D. Their temperatures rise quickly.
30. What d the scientists hpe t d?
A. Study the suthern crcdiles' behavirs.
B. Mve the nrthern crcdiles t the suth.
C. Extend the research time n the crcdiles.
D. Help the crcdiles t adapt t heat waves.
31. What's the best title fr the text?
A. Crcdiles' Mild Respnses t Temperature
B. Temperature's Negative Impacts n Crcdiles
C. Temperature Changes in Crcdiles' Habitats
D. Crcdiles' Defense f Their Bdy Temperature

Majr bitech(生物技术)cmpanies that prduce a lt f made-t-rder DNA fr scientists have prtectins in place t keep dangerus bilgical material ut f the hands f wuld-be harmful peple.
But nw, a new study has demnstrated hw AI culd be used t easily get arund thse bisafety prcesses. A team f AI researchers fund that prtein-design tls culd be used t “paraphrase" the DNA cdes f pisnus prteins.“Re-writing them in ways that culd preserve their structure, and ptentially their functin," says Eric Hrvitz,Micrsft's chief scientific fficer.
Cmputer scientists used AI t generate DNA cdes fr mre than 75,000 variants(变体)f dangerus prteins-and firewalls used by DNA makers weren't cnsistently able t catch them. "T ur cncern," says Hrvitz, “they slipped past the bisecurity screening systems used wrldwide by DNA cmpanies t flag dangerus rders." A fix was quickly written and applied t the bisecurity screening sftware. But it's nt perfect-it still culdn't ascertain sme variants.
"AI-pwered prtein design is ne f science's mst exciting frntiers. We're seeing advances in medicine and public health," says HIrvitz. "Yet like many pwerfultechnlgies, these tls can be misused.” Bilgists have debated whether t penly publish certain experimental results, thugh pen discussins are science's lifebld. The researchers and the jurnal behind this study held back sme infrmatin and will restrict access t their data and sftware. They enlisted a nn-prfit third party t decide wh has a reasnable need t knw.
“This is the first time such a mdel has been emplyed t manage risks f sharing dangerus infrmatin in a scientific publicatin," says Hrvitz. Scientists, wrried abut future bisecurity threats, praised this wrk. “My verall reactin t that was favrable,”says scientist Artur Casadevall. "Here we have a system in which we are identifying weak pints. And what yu're seeing is an attempt t crrect knwn weak pints. But what are the weak pints that we dn't knw abut and that will require future crrectins?”says Casadevall.
32. Hw des AI challenge the existing bisecurity defenses?
A. By inventing new prtein-design tls.
B.By mnitring the screening systems.
C. By imprving the firewalls' cnsistency.
D. By changing harmful DNA instructins.
33. What des the underlined wrd "ascertain" in Paragraph 3 mean?
A.Prtect.B. Hide.C.Prduce.D.Detect.
34. What is the scientists' pineering attempt in bisafety?
A. They supprted pen publicatin fully.
B. They cntrlled key infrmatin access.
C. They allwed relevant pen discussins.
D. They invested heavily in medicine and health.
35. What is Casadevall's attitude t future bisafety?
A. Unclear.B.Cnfident.C.Cncerned.D.Dubtful.
