His brther, hwever, did get a gvernment flat and Mr. Oh was invited t live there, but he eventually mved ut as he said he did nt want t bther the family. Upn getting clse t the shelter, yu see ashes in the drway frm the pen fire that Mr. Oh wuld ck n. The garden near his tent is where he wuld grw his wn fd. The twering jackfruit tree ver his tent, he says, prvided enugh shade, and he never felt uncmfrtable.
Lneliness was never a prblem either, he says. He kept himself busy taking care f his garden, althugh that, he adds, was made easy by the gd grwing cnditins. The wrst aspect f living in the frest, he says, was the mice. They wuld find their way int his shelter and bite hles in his clthes.

In rder t help discver spilage (变质) and reduce fd waste fr supermarkets and cnsumers, researchers have develped new lw-cst, smart phne-linked, ec-friendly spilage sensrs fr meat and fish packaging.
One in three UK cnsumers thrw away fd just because it reaches the use-by date, but 60% (4.2 millin tns) f the £12.5 billin-wrth f fd we thrw away each year is safe t eat.
The researchers, whse findings were published in ACS Sensrs, say the sensrs culd als finally replace the use-by date, which is nw widely used t tell if fd is fresh and eatable.
The sensrs cst tw US cents each t make. Knwn as “paper-based electrical gas sensrs (PEGS)”, they sense spilage gases like ammnia (a pisnus gas with a strng unpleasant smell) in meat and fish prducts. The infrmatin prvided by the electrnic nse is received by a smart phne, and then yu can knw whether the fd is fresh and safe t eat.
Lead authr Dr. Firat Guder, f Imperial’s Department f Biengineering, said, “Althugh they’re designed t keep us safe, use-by dates can lead t eatable fd being thrwn away. They dn’t always reflect its actual freshness. In fact, peple ften get sick frm fd-brne diseases due t pr strage, even when an item is within its use-by
date.
“These sensrs are cheap enugh s we hpe t see supermarkets using them within three years. Our gal is t use PEGS in fd packaging t reduce unnecessary fd waste.”
The authrs hpe that PEGS culd have applicatins (应用) beynd fd prcessing, like sensing chemicals in
agriculture, air quality, and detecting disease markers in breath.
What is the functin f PEGS accrding t the text?
T imprve the service f stres.
T help supermarkets stre fds.
T imprve the taste f fd prducts.
T help peple test fd freshness.
What rle des the smartphne play while PEGS are functining?
It acts as an electrnic nse.
It reads the infrmatin cllected by PEGS.
It discvers the spilage gases frm fds.
It helps print the gas sensrs nt paper.
What des Dr. Firat Guder say abut use-by dates?
They are nt cmpletely reliable.B. They can help reduce fd waste.
C. They are nt accepted by cnsumers.D. They are based n scientific research.
What des the authr mainly talk abut in the text?
The prcess f researching spilage sensrs.
A new technlgy in packaging t reduce fd waste.
Use-by dates’ influence n supermarkets and cnsumers.

In 1995, a middle-aged man named McArthur Wheeler rbbed tw banks in Pittsburgh during the day. He didn’t wear a mask — he even smiled at the security cameras befre leaving each bank. That night, the plice arrested him. When fficers shwed Wheeler the camera tapes, he lked shcked and said, “But I used the juice!” Wheeler thught rubbing lemn juice n his skin wuld make him invisible t the cameras. He knew lemn juice wrks as “invisible ink” — yu can’t see what’s written with it unless yu heat the paper. S he believed he wuldn’t shw up n the tapes if he stayed away frm heat.
This strange case gt the attentin f David Dunning, a psychlgist at Crnell University. He asked his graduate student Justin Kruger t help figure ut what was ging n. They fund that almst everyne thinks their abilities (like scial skills r thinking skills) are gd, but sme peple mistakenly believe their abilities are much better than they really are. This wrng sense f cnfidence is nw called the “Dunning-Kruger effect.”
T study this, Dunning and Kruger did experiments with cllege students. In ne test, they asked students questins abut grammar, lgic and jkes. Then they had the students guess their scres and hw they did cmpared t thers. The students wh scred the lwest verestimated their abilities the mst. Fr example, thse at the bttm thught they did better than tw-thirds f the ther students!
It’s cmmn fr peple t verestimate their abilities. But the prblem with unskilled peple is that they nt nly make bad chices — they als can’t tell they’re making mistakes. In a year-lng study, gd students culd better guess their future exam scres if they gt feedback (反馈) n their grades. But pr students still didn’t realize they were ding badly, even when they gt clear, repeated feedback. Instead f thinking abut their mistakes, they
insisted they were right. As Charles Darwin wrte in The Descent f Man (1871): “Ignrance mre frequently begets
cnfidence than des knwledge.”
Interestingly, very smart peple als can’t assess their abilities accurately. Just as D and F students verestimate their skills, A students underestimate theirs. The difference is: if given helpful feedback, skilled peple can adjust their self-assessment — but unskilled peple can’t.
Why did McArthur Wheeler rub lemn juice n his skin befre rbbing the banks?
He wanted t prtect his skin frm the sun.
He thught it wuld make cameras unable t catch him.
He used it t hide the smell f his sweat in the bank.
He believed it culd help him stay calm during the rbbery.
Which f the fllwing statements abut the Dunning-Kruger effect is TRUE?
The effect is true fr everyne in daily life.
It suggests that mst peple lack abilities.
Sme peple are vercnfident abut their abilities.
The cnclusin is made based n many bank rbberies.
The underlined wrd “begets” in Paragraph 4 can be replaced by “”.
A. results inB. makes use fC. brings dwnD. breaks away frm
What can we infer frm the passage?
True knwledge means knwing hw much yu dn’t knw.
It’s impssible fr peple t judge their real ability level.
Wrng cnfidence is the main reasn why peple fail.
Peple with great abilities ften have a lw pinin f themselves.

Interestingly, science als says 62 degrees is the magic number fr brainwrk. 19 It said 62 degrees was
the temperature at which the schlby subjects f the study functined perfect. And while we’ re speaking f wrk and schl, ther research shws that peple study better when the weather utside is “bad”.

In fact, peple ften get sick frm fd-brne diseases due t pr strage, even when an item is within its use-by date.

Then they had the students guess their scres and hw they did cmpared
t thers.
