Mike’s shaved head and tatted(有纹身的) arms made mthers pull their children clser n the beach. I was a new lifeguard that summer, and n my first shift I admitted t myself: Mike lked mre like a warning than a watcher.
One August dusk the sea turned unpleasant. A rip(离岸流) current dragged tw small bys seaward while their mther, frzen in panic, screamed frm the shre. Mike was ff the twer befre the whistle finished eching. He entered the water sideways, cutting acrss the current until he was level with the bys, then swam sideways again t escape the rip. I watched frm the sand, helpless. In less than fur minutes he returned, a child tucked under each arm like ftballs.
The mther ran frward, snatched her sns and spun away withut a wrd. N thank-yu, n eye-cntact—just the back f her T-shirt disappearing int the crwd. I waited fr Mike t swear r shrug. He simply jgged back t his twer, eyes already scanning the next wave.
Later I asked why he stayed silent. He laughed, salt water still n his lashes. “Wrds dn’t keep kids alive, watching des.” He added, “She was scared. Fear makes peple frget manners.”
That night I wrte in my lgbk: Herism is smetimes missed because it desn’t lk like the stries we were prmised. Mike’s pay was twelve dllars an hur, but the sea had measured him at a different rate.
Ten years n, whenever I feel judgement rising in my thrat, I remember the scar acrss Mike’s scalp and the tw bys wh will never knw the name f the man wh gave them the rest f their lives. I prmised myself never t let appearance drwn reality again.
      4. What first impressin did Mike make n the authr?
      A. He appeared friendly but careless.
      B. He struck peple as shy and quiet.

      C. T hear the whistle frm ther lifeguards.
      D. T demnstrate prfessinal swimming skills.

Fr three ht days in August 2023, at ne f the biggest music festivals in the Netherlands, a line f peple snaked utside the entrance f fur shipping cntainers. They were queuing up t meet sme msquites.
The shipping cntainers were a pp-up labratry, and the peple were vlunteering fr a study that measured hw attractive they were t the bld-sucking insects. Festival-gers rested their arms against acrylic bxes (亚克力盒子) that let caged msquites smell but nt bite. A camera helped track the insects’ landings, and then a cmputer calculated a scre. Felix Hl, a quantitative bilgist at Radbud University Medical Center in Nijmegen, the Netherlands, directed the study.
There’s prbably an interplay f different elements at wrk, like smene’s diet, scent, temperature and the micrbial (微生物的) cmpanins living n their skin, Hl says.
In the pp-up lab, Hl’s team tested msquites’ respnses t vlunteers and cllected a lt f ther data, including infrmatin abut their cleanliness, diet, and alchl use, sleeping habits and sunscreen applicatin. The team tested ver 500 vlunteers and bserved a wide range f msquit respnses. After sme peple placed their arm against the cage, the insects zipped away t the sugar feeder n the ppsite side. Other participants had msquites targeting them within secnds.
Such extra-attractive humans may have been beer drinkers. Peple wh recently drank beer were 44 percent mre attractive t msquites than peple wh didn’t. Amng peple wh had shwered recently, thse wh had applied sunscreen were abut half as attractive as thse wh had nt, the team fund.
Overall, the team’s results suggest that if yu dn’t want t get bitten by msquites, “dn’t drink beer and put n yur sunscreen,” Hl says. If that advice desn’t sund appealing, he says, there is an alternative: “Yu can d whatever yu want and put n lng sleeves.”
      8. What is the primary functin f the first paragraph?

      B. It was the fd surce fr msquites in the experiment.
      C. It helped cmpare hw much humans attracted msquites.
      D. It tested msquit preferences by creating a nature-like envirnment.

The mnster black hle at the center f ur galaxy is spinning at near “tp speed”, accrding t a new artificial intelligence(AI) mdel. The mdel, trained partially n cmplex telescpe data that was previusly cnsidered t nisy t be useful, aims t create the mst detailed black hle images ever.
Fr decades, scientists have been trying t bserve and characterize Sagittarius A *, the supermassive black hle at the heart f ur galaxy. In May 2022, they uncvered the first-ever image f this bject, but there were still a number f questins, such as hw it behaves.
An internatinal team f scientists has nw used AI technlgy t analyze data frm the Event Hrizn Telescpe(EHT), hping t discver new details abut Sagittarius A*. Hwever, this methd is easily affected by water vapr in Earth’s atmsphere. This means it can be tugh fr researchers t make sense f the infrmatin the instrument cllects.
Michael Janssen, an astrphysicist at Radbud University in the Netherlands, said, “A neural(神经) netwrk is ideally suited t slve this prblem.” Janssen and his team trained an AI mdel n EHT data that had been previusly abandned fr being t nisy, Thrugh this AI technique, they generated a new image f Sagittarius A *’s structure, and their picture revealed sme new features. Fr example, the black hle appears t be spinning at “almst tp speed”, and its rtatinal(旋转的) axis als seems t be pinting tward Earth.
Hwever, nt all experts are cnvinced that the AI mdel is accurate. “I’m very sympathetic and interested in what they’re ding,” Reinhard Genzel, ne f the winners f the 2020 Nbel Prize in physics, said. “But artificial intelligence is nt a miracle cure.” Accrding t Genzel, the relatively lw quality f the data ging int the mdel culd have prduced unreliable results. As a result, the new image may nt perfectly reflect the riginal, he said.
In the future, Janssen and his team plan t apply their technique t the latest EHT data and measure it against real-wrld results. They hpe this will help t enhance the mdel and imprve the future nes.
      12. Which f the fllwing is NOT included in Paragraph 2?
      A. The research target.B. The achievement.
      C. Remaining gaps.D. Financial issues.
      13. What did the AI mdel achieve?
      A. Frmerly unknwn features f Sagittarius A*.
      B. Immediate recgnitin amng scientists.
      C. Mre accurate bservatinal data.
      D. The mst detailed galaxy images.
      14. What is the attitude f Genzel tward the AI technique?
      A. Deeply cncerned.B. Cmpletely ppsed.
      C. Cautiusly ptimistic.D. Reasnably cnfident.
      15. What will Janssen likely d in the future?
      A. Supply additinal training data t the AI mdel.
      B. Crss-check AI results with newer EHT data.
      C. Adjust the bservatin angle f the EHT.
      D. Apply crrectins t the EHT data.
