When I was 10, I made a lt f them and sld each fr 5 cents in ur neighbrhd. They are easy t learn, but I hpe I still have the skill.” Keen n the idea, Kristen quickly rdered us each a lm and lp bags, naming ur sessins “Patti’s Pt Hlders” after me.
I’ve always cherished family time, missing ur Sunday dinners arund the big table, yet wanted my kids — nw yung adults — t feel unfettered. “Yu have wings,” I tld them, and Kristen used hers t mve 3,000 miles away. She embraced that freedm, texting me daily abut new adventures: kayaking, hiking, and salsa dancing. I culd barely keep up.
Our first pt hlder sessin was spent figuring ut the instructins as I jgged my memry. First, I attached lps hrizntally t the 7-inch lm. Then I wve ther lps ver and under the attached nes with a hk, and finished with a crcheted edge. The whle prcess tk abut an hur. But by the secnd sessin, we had gtten the hang f it well enugh t chat freely. We asked each ther questins and shared truths, and I learned mre abut her than when she lived nearby.

The mre light yu’re expsed t at night, the higher yur risk f heart disease becmes, accrding t the largest study n hw night light affects heart health. Fr instance, shift wrkers expsed t light at night have a higher risk f heart disease.
Previus studies that used satellite data fund the assciatins between peple living in bright, urban areas and heart disease, but they nly measured utdr light at night. Daniel Windred at Flinders University in Adelaide, Australia, and his clleagues wanted t knw whether an individual’s verall light expsure was assciated with heart prblems.
They tracked abut 89,000 peple withut heart disease wh wre light sensrs fr ne week between 2013 and 2016. The sensrs captured any natural r artificial light frm their envirnment, including that emitted frm phnes. Over three years, thse with the brightest nights had a 23 t 56 percent higher risk f develping heart disease than thse with dark nights. An example f a persn in the highest light expsure grup might be smene turning n verhead lights fr an hur between midnight and 6 am.
The researchers cntrlled factrs like sex, age, smking and shift wrk. They als shwed that the assciatin between light expsure and heart disease risk was independent f sleep duratin r efficiency, r a genetic tendency t heart disease — pinting t night light expsure as the key driver f the results.
The researchers indicated the disturbance t bdy clck caused by night light expsure can damage glucse (葡萄糖) tlerance, increasing the risk f type 2 diabetes, which is a risk factr fr heart disease. This disturbance can als affect bld pressure and increase the risk f abnrmal heart rhythms due t cnflicting signals between the brain and heart.
“The imprtance f these bservatins cannt be understated,” says Martin Yung at the University f Alabama at Birmingham. “With the cming f the 24/7 sciety, disruptin f ur circadian systems has becme increasingly cmmn. This study highlights the significant health risks assciated with expsure t light at the ‘wrng’ time,” Martin added.
28. What can we learn frm the latest study?
A. Light sent ut by phnes des n harm t peple.
B. Lnger light expsure causes higher risks.
C. Overhead lights have negative effects n health.
D. Night light expsure increases the risk f heart disease.
29. What is the limitatin f the previus studies?
A. Ignring the urban-rural differences.
B. Lacking sufficient participants.
C. Failing t assess verall light expsure.
D. Fcusing nly n indr light at night.
30. What des the authr intend t d in paragraph 5?
A. Prvide further explanatin.B. Give mre examples.
C. Present a new argument.D. Intrduce a different methd.

Carbn stred thusands f years ag is being released by rivers wrldwide, accrding t the findings that suggest human activities are damaging the natural landscape mre than previusly thught.
Researchers already knew rivers release carbn dixide and methane as part f the glbal carbn cycle. They are thught t send ut arund tw billin tnnes f this carbn each year. But when Jsh Dean frm the University f Bristl, UK, and his clleagues set ut t determine hw ld this carbn really is, they fund that apprximately 60% f the carbn released by rivers wrldwide actually riginated frm stres dating back thusands f years. The team used radiactive dating t assess the age f carbn and methane released frm mre than 700 river parts acrss 26 cuntries.
“What really astnished us, when we cllected all the data we culd get, was that mre than half f the carbn being released wuld be cming frm these much lder carbn stres,” says Dean. “There is a srt f cntinuus change, r sideways flw, f these ld carbn stres.”
Ancient carbn is trapped in rcks, peatlands (泥炭地) and wetlands. The findings suggest that as much as ne billin tnnes f it is being released back int the atmsphere each year thrugh rivers. That means plants and sils are remving arund ne billin tnnes mre CO₂ frm the atmsphere each year than first thught, t cunter this impact.
“The pressing questin nw is why rivers are releasing s much ancient carbn. It culd be due t climate change and ther human activities disrupting the natural landscape,” says Dean. Fr example, rising temperatures caused by climate change culd be triggering the release f carbn frm thawing permafrst, r accelerating the rate f rck weathering. Other activities, such as the draining (排空) f peatlands r drying ut f wetlands, culd als be cntributing.
The findings will have implicatins fr hw natins draw up their climate plans, by determining hw much they rely n the natural landscape t remve nging CO₂ emissin (排放).
32. Hw did Jsh Dean feel abut the findings?
A. Amused.B. Surprised.C. Ashamed.D. Depressed.
33. Which f the fllwing primarily address the carbn emissin frm rivers?
A. The researchers.B. The 26 cuntries.
C. Plants and sils.D. Ancient carbn stres.
34. What may Jsh Dean advise peple t d?
A. Explre rivers.B. Prtect wetlands.
C. Make mre plans.D. Release ancient carbn.
35. What may be the best title fr the text?
A. Scientists discver the new secrets f carbn
B. Old rivers cntribute t glbal climate change
C. Human activities damage glbal carbn cycle
D. Ancient carbn frm rivers reveals climate impact
