My parents have a big cat at hme named Cmet. He has big ears, a large head, huge feet, and a gentle persnality — but we have n way f knwing fr sure. He came frm the lcal animal shelter. My brther and I didn’t really want him, since he was a kitten and we wanted t adpt an adult cat because we thught the kittens wuld be mre likely t find anther hme, but my little sister insisted.
We brught Cmet hme that day. He sn fell ill and grew alarmingly weak — his ribs stuck ut, his eyes swelled, and his fur dulled. He became s fragile that I feared tuching him, thugh he clearly needed care.
Sme years later, I went hme ne afternn after having had an emtinal breakdwn. My whle life was upside dwn. I felt hllw, dead, an empty shell f a persn. I had n idea what pieces were even wrth picking up again.
I fund Cmet curled up in a crner that afternn. He’d been asleep, but he lifted his head and lked at me when I came in. I reached a hand tward him. He nuzzled it, immediately burst int a deep, lud purr, and gave me a perfectly cntent cat grin. I mved my hand dwn t scratch his back and sides, and he stretched luxuriusly, giving me lks f abslute adratin.
At that pint, it hit me: this cat lved me. The cat I didn’t want, the cat I culdn’t bear t take care f when his life depended n it, lved me. And he wuld always lve me. N matter what was ging n in my life, Cmet wuld still lk up frm a nap when I entered the rm, wuld still lve t be tuched by me.
I believe lve is steadfast. I believe that real lve, whether it cmes frm yur families, r a shelter cat, is ffered determinedly and uncnditinally. Lve is what enables us t pick up the pieces f ur brken lives and g n.
      24. Why was the writer unwilling t adpt Cmet initially?
      A. He thught adult cats were mre gentle.B. His sister resisted adpting Cmet.
      C. Kittens were thught easier t be adpted.D. Cmet was a weak and sick kitten.
      25. Hw did Cmet help the writer g thrugh his emtinal breakdwn?
      A. By lying quietly beside him.B. By making him feel deeply lved.
      C. By distracting him with grins.D. By prtecting him frm lneliness.
      26. What des the underlined wrd “steadfast” in paragraph 6 mean?
      A. Faithful.B. Rmantic.C. Temprary.D. Unfrgettable.
      27. Which f the fllwing can be a suitable title fr the text?

Picture this, yu win tw tickets t a sld-ut cncert and eagerly text t ask yur friends if they’d like t jin. There cmes their respnse “Maybe.” Yur md immediately turns, fr yu need t wait fr their decisins befre yu can figure ut yur plans fr the cncert.
If yu’ve experienced anything like the abve anecdte, yu’re nt alne. Peple respnding “maybe” t invitatins is a cmmn yet annying aspect f scial life. What ges n in peple’s heads when they aren’t sure whether t accept an invitatin? Scial invitatins can be a delicate dance. Peple ften misread what smene extending an invitatin wants t hear and verestimate an inviter’s likelihd f preferring a “maybe” ver a “n.” Mrever, they fail t realize hw much mre disrespected peple feel when they receive a “maybe” in respnse t their invitatin.
Naturally, we wanted t figure ut why this awkward dynamic plays ut. We fund that it’s largely due t smething called “mtivated reasning.” Mtivated reasning ccurs when a persn interprets infrmatin in a biased (有偏差的) way t suit their wn wishes. In ther wrds, invitees cnvince themselves that inviters want t hear “maybe” instead f “n” because a “maybe” is better fr the invitees, allwing them t leave their ptins pen. Besides, peple tend t verestimate the negative cnsequences f saying “n” t invitatins, thinking it will upset, anger and disappint inviters.
Hwever, there were certain situatins that made peple mre cmfrtable saying “n” t an invitatin. When recipients f an invitatin put themselves in the shes f the persn extending the invitatin, they are mre likely t realize that they’d prbably prefer a definite answer. When the participants get invited t d smething they didn’t want t d, they had n desire t keep their ptins pen. The mtivated reasning then became irrelevant.
While navigating scial situatins can be tricky, being direct and definite is smetimes best. It might reduce yur ptins. But it’ll keep thse wh invite yu frm being left uncertain and maybe they’ll still think f yu when the next cncert cmes t twn.
      28. Why is the cncert anecdte mentined at the beginning?
      A. T explain the backgrund f the invitatin.B. T stress the imprtance f quick replies.
      C. T encurage immediate decisin- making.D. T intrduce a cmmn scial situatin.
      29. What is the main reasn fr the respnse f “maybe” t an invitatin?
      A. A biased interpretatin f scial cues.B. A desire fr harmnius cmmunicatin.
      C. An underestimatin f refusal cnsequence.D. An understanding f the inviter’s expectatin.
      30. What is the authr’s suggestin in the last paragraph?
      A. Keeping yur ptins pen fr better plans.B. Accepting invitatins t maintain friendships.
      C. Priritizing clear respnse ver pen ptins.D. Thinking twice befre refusing an invitatin.
      31. What is the best title fr the passage?
      A. The Psychlgy behind “Maybe”B. The Hidden Cnsequence f “Maybe”
      C. “Maybe”: A Plite Escape frm CnflictD. “Maybe”: A Perfect Slutin t Invitatins

Why d sme peple feel such a strng bnd with celebrities, and what des this reveal abut their persnality and values? A new study published in the Internatinal Jurnal f Psychlgy has fund that peple wh strngly admire celebrities tend t scre higher in bth materialism and narcissism (自恋). The study als fund that peple wh perceive themselves as similar t their favrite celebrity are mre likely t have these attitudes.
The study, cnducted by Davis, Lcker, and Williams, recruited 215 undergraduates, mstly wmen, wh cmpleted a battery f questinnaires measuring their attitudes tward celebrities, materialistic values, and narcissistic tendencies. Participants als answered newly created questins that assessed hw similar they felt t their favrite celebrity in terms f persnality, appearance, r lifestyle.
Celebrity wrship was assessed with the Celebrity Attitude Scale (量表). Materialism was measured by examining hw much value peple place n wning things, hw imprtant pssessins are t their identity, and whether they believe material gds make them happier. Narcissism was measured in tw frms: grandise narcissism (characterized by cnfidence, entitlement, and dminance) and vulnerable narcissism (marked by insecurity, sensitivity t criticism, and a preccupatin with self-image).
The results shwed a cnsistent relatinship between celebrity wrship and materialism. Peple wh scred higher n celebrity wrship als tended t place greater imprtance n mney, status, and pssessins. When it came t narcissism, nly the vulnerable type, peple with higher levels f emtinal insecurity and self-fcus, were mre likely t feel strngly cnnected t celebrities. Mst imprtantly, perceived similarity — whether in appearance, behavir, r persnality — std ut as ne f the strngest predictrs f celebrity wrship.
The researchers cncluded, “celebrity wrship is a cmplex cnstruct, but perceived similarity with a favrite celebrity and vulnerable narcissism may be fruitful avenues fr future research.” Still, an imprtant questin remains: d peple idlize celebrities because they already feel similar t them, r d they start t see themselves as similar after frming an emtinal attachment?
      32. What is paragraph 2 abut?
      A. The research backgrund.B. The research subjects.
      C. The research results.D. The research methd.
      33. Accrding t the study, wh are mre likely t wrship celebrities?
      A. Thse indifferent t wealth and scial status.
      B. Thse valuing self-cnfidence and dminance.
      C. Thse emtinally insecure and self-fcused.
      D. Thse seeking spiritual grwth beynd pssessins.
      34. Accrding t the researchers, what might be a directin f future research?
      A. Celebrity wrship.B. Grandise narcissism.
      C. Materialism.D. Perceived similarity.
      35. What is the main purpse f the text?
      A. T explain celebrity wrship psychlgy.
      B. T warn against the dangers f celebrity culture.
      C. T criticize celebrity materialism and narcissism.

Why D Electric Vehicles Make Peple Mre Carsick?
With electric vehicles (EVs) gaining significant ppularity glbally — accunting fr 22% f new car sales in 2024 — many passengers reprt experiencing increased mtin sickness cmpared t traditinal vehicles. Scial media platfrms are filled with such persnal experiences, particularly frm thse riding in passenger r back seats. ___36___
A primary reasn fr this phenmenn is the lack f familiarity with EV mtin patterns. As William Emnd, a PhD researcher in France specializing in mtin sickness, explains, peple’s brains heavily depend n past experiences t predict and interpret mtin. ___37___ Fr instance, experienced drivers naturally expect acceleratin after hearing engine revs in fuel-pwered cars, but EVs perate withut such familiar auditry signals.
___38___ Recent research indicates that specific seat vibratins and the cmplete absence f traditinal engine nise in EVs cntribute significantly t mtin discmfrt. Furthermre, the regenerative braking systems — innvative technlgy that transfrms kinetic energy (动能) int battery pwer — cause an unusually gradual slwdwn. ___39___
Beynd this, mtin sickness fundamentally ccurs when the brain receives cntradictry sensry signals abut bdy mvement. The inner ear, visual cues, and physical sensatins send mixed messages t the brain, creating what experts call a “neural mismatch”. ___40___ This mechanism explains why drivers themselves rarely experience carsickness — they cntrl and predict the vehicle’s mvements.
      A. Such lng-term cnflict can trigger mtin sickness symptms.
      B. Anther cntributing factr is that EV-specific features add t the prblem.
      C. Sme manufacturers are imprving suspensin systems t minimize vibratins.
      D. Drivers usually dn’t experience carsickness due t their cntrl ver the vehicle.
      E. This technlgy lengthens the stpping prcess and may wrsen feelings f sickness.
      F. Withut previus EV experience, the brain has t struggle t estimate frces accurately.
      G. In regard t this phenmenn, researchers have identified several scientific explanatins.
