Carl Wilhelm Scheele ranks as ne f the greatest scientists f all time, but he paid a big price fr this hnr.
Brn in 1742 in present-day Germany, Scheele learned abut chemicals frm his parents starting at a yung age. When he was 14, he was sent away t Gthenburg (哥德堡) t becme the apprentice (学徒) f a family friend. There he spent eight years studying chemistry and cnducting experiments late int the night. Next, Scheele mved arund the Hly Rman Empire, wrking fr different chemists and becming mre learned in his trade. In 1767, he mved t Stckhlm, where he discvered tartaric acid (酒石酸).
After three years in Stckhlm, he became the directr f the Lcke Labratry. It was there, while he was analyzing a strange reactin, that Scheele became the first persn t identify xygen.
He called the element “fire air” because he believed, based n the theries f his time, that a substance that made up fire was released frm items when they burned. Scheele believed xygen t be this substance, nt understanding that xygen is merely an element that facilitates (促进) the chemical reactin that is fire.
As histric as this discvery was, Scheele seldm gt credit fr it, largely because English scientist Jseph Priestley published findings n xygen befre Scheele, even thugh it is nw generally accepted that Scheele made the actual discvery first.
Thrugh his wrk, he thus expsed himself t many harmful materials. These chemicals had a deadly effect n Scheele, and he eventually died f kidney failure in 1786.
Sadly, in spite f his many achievements and the fact that he gave his life t chemistry, Carl Wilhelm Scheele is ften frgtten in the histry f science. Thugh he discvered many elements befre ther better-knwn scientists did, his unwillingness t bth attend meetings f the Ryal Swedish Academy f Sciences and t publish his wrk allwed ther scientists t take credit fr discveries that he had made.
      4. Wh first taught Chemistry t Scheele?
      A. His parents.
      B. Jseph Priestley.
      C. His family friend.
      D. The Hly Rman Empire.
      5. When did Schele prbably discver xygen?

      B. Tartaric acid.
      C. The strange reactin.

Shannn Brescher Shea’s nine-year-ld sn struggled with fcus and fllwing directins at hme and at schl. But after riding his bike, whether arund the park r t schl, he felt bviusly calmer. “We call it mving meditatin (冥想),” says Shea, wh is a family biking advcate and authr in Maryland. “We saw hw extremely helpful biking was fr his fcus, emtinal regulatin and ability t fllw directins.”
This experience isn’t unique. Research cnsistently shws that physical activity cntributes t imprving mental health. “Exercise, n matter yur age, is the single best thing yu can d fr every rgan in yur bdy, including yur brain,” says Allan Reiss, a prfessr and directr f Brain Sciences at Stanfrd University Schl f Medicine.
And while any exercise helps a grwing bdy f research shws bicycling is amng the activities that might prvide even mre f a mental health bst. Scientists aren’t yet sure why, but it might have smething t d with all the functinal skills cyclists use. “Yu need t maintain yur balance and prcess a lt f infrmatin frm yur envirnment, like deciding whether yu can squeeze past a tree r hw hard yu need t brake.” says Reiss, “Mst imprtantly, yu’ve gt t crdinate (协调), sense, prcess, integrate, regulate, and cntinually make decisins.”
Accrding t Reiss, “Research suggests that physical activity like cycling likely encurages new cell grwth in areas f the brain linked t memry and prblem-slving, and can supprt strnger cnnectins between neurns (神经元), ultimately impacting memry and learning.”
Luckily, it’s nt t hard t get n a bike fr mst peple: Yu shuld fcus n the fun. T ensure riders dn’t get tired t quickly (r t bred), build in a fun stp rather than make the ride the single fcus. Self-paced explratin and adventure are key t the ride. Cycling can multiply when it becmes a scial prject. In neighbrhds where bike lanes r ther safe-t-ride pathways exist, rganizing a grup ride with friends might be just the ticket t less stressed, mre relaxed individuals.

      B. Its sense f freedm and explratin helps mind grw.
      C. It needs better integrated crdinatin abilities.
      D. Its utdr expsure helps imprve the md state.
      10. What is the functin f the quted statement in paragraph 4?
      A. Offering suggestins.B. Explaining cncepts.
      C. Presenting experiments.D. Prviding evidence.

      C. Purchasing tickets fr a grup ride is necessary.
      D. Bike lane cnstructin is prmted by cmmunities.

Dr Dimitris Liarkapis, a member f the research grup, said, “T have a better idea f what the future will lk like, think f having such cars that nt nly use sensrs t scan what’s arund them, they can als talk t each ther and exchange safety-related infrmatin abut their surrundings ver an area that cvers several square miles. With the help f 5G, a vehicle-generated early warning system that reminds drivers is pssible within the next few years. Cars that are clse enugh t the danger area will transmit warning messages t ther cars arund them using shrt-range cmmunicatin technlgies, but als t cars further away using 5G, fast and reliably.”
A few manufacturers are already wrking n cnnected cars. Of them, Frd tld its intentin t fit 80 percent f its future vehicles with technlgy that warns drivers abut upcming rad accidents, bad weather and traffic jams.
