It seems symblic f the idea that talking can supprt recvering.
Many peple find it difficult t talk abut serius illness r injury. Serius injuries, likeMcGrath's, cme with a cmplex range f emtins including anger, denial, and depressin. But sharing such emtins and talking abut injuries can help peple t manage them.
“Fr me, t have a gd supprt netwrk arund me helped me get thrugh thse tugh times,”McGrath said during an interview in 2018. Understandably, many peple with serius injuries find it easier t talk with thers
ging thrugh the same r a similar experience. This can bring a fuller level f understanding that helps peple live with their injury n practical and emtinal levels.
“Six mnths after I gt hurt, I gt t see peple wh'd been injured ding things that I didn't think were pssible,” says McGrath. Inspired, he tried a few sprts befre finding his passin fr paracane that he tk t the Invictus Games in Lndn, 2014. His achievements in sprts have seen him win multiple gld medals at the Paralympic Games and Wrld Champinships.

City living has lng been described as fast- paced. A study frm the Massachusetts Institute fTechnlgy reveals that citizens in three majr nrth- eastern U. S. cities —— Bstn, New Yrk, andPhiladelphia —— are walking 15 percent faster than they did in 1980. They als fund that fewer peple are spending extra time in public spaces, with the number drpping by 14 percent ver the past three decades.
C- authr Arianna Salazar- Miranda said that the findings suggest a shift in hw peple use public spaces. She said,“When they start t functin mre like passageways than gathering spts,we risk lsing cities' ability t generate infrmal encunters that drive creativity, engagement and cmmunity.”
Ruth Cnry Daltn, a prfessr f architecture at Nrthumbria University in the UK, wh was nt invlved in the study, said,“A rise in walking speed shrtens the average street jurney by abut13 percent, which means fewer secnds in which passerby interactins, eye cntact, r simply ' being present' can ccur.” Daltn added,“When the street itself gives yu less t stp and lk arund,yu tend t hurry thrugh it even faster.”
In the study, the researchers used machine learning t analyze the vides taken by urbanistWilliam Whyte between 1978 and 1980 in New Yrk City. In 2010, a research team led by scilgist Keith Hamptn reprduced Whyte's filming cnditins, shting updated vides frm the same public lcatins at the same time f day. Amng the findings was a drp in the number f peple wh jined grups after entering public spaces. As fr the reasns, the researchers pint t the rise f smartphnes, which allw peple t make plans digitally befre stepping utside. Cffee culture may als be playing a rle, drawing peple away frm sidewalks and int climate- cntrlled,Wi- Fi- equipped venues.
The researchers hpe their wrk will infrm hw cities design and redesign public areas, especially at a time when digital plarizatin is reshaping hw peple cnnect in real life.“Public space is such an imprtant element f city life,” said c- authr Salazar- Miranda.“The mre we can keep imprving public space, the mre we can make ur cities better places fr peple t cme tgether.”
Why des the authr mentin the numbers in paragraph 1?
T assess urban planning challenges.B. T demnstrate imprved traffic efficiency.
C. T highlight reduced scial cntact.D. T prvide evidence fr faster lifestyles.
What is the impact f faster walking speeds accrding t Daltn?
It prmtes physical exercise.B. It leads t mre traffic accidents.

What methd was emplyed t cnduct the study?
Surveys acrss multiple cities.B. Cmputer analysis f vides.
C. Tracking walking behavirs.D. Cmparing urban architecture.
What is the study expected t help peple d?
Imprve public space design.B. Change mdern urban lifestyle.

Humans aren't the nly animals with ht tempers(脾气).
In 2016, eclgist Kristen Cecala and a wrkmate saw black-bellied salamanders frmAppalachian streams quickly jump at each ther in a special bx in the lab. Cecala says these small animals strngly defend their hme area by biting their ppnents t make them escape. The experiment was set up t test hw rising temperatures wuld affect salamanders' behavir. As it turned ut, they were nearly fur times as likely t act aggressively(好斗) at 25°Celsius, much warmer than their stream habitats. And studies shw that many animals like mnkeys and fish tend t get mre aggressive at higher temperatures.
As the planet warms due t climate change, rising temperatures culd affect sme species' scial structures and ecsystems. But the findings may als tell us smething deeper abut hw heat affects animals physilgical and ptentially reveal clues t increased vilence and crime amng humans in ht weather.
One pssible explanatin fr this heat-aggressin link in cld-blded animals is that warmth dials up the animals' metablism s( 代谢), using up mre f their energy. This requires mre calries, making animals mre territrial t secure fd. By cntrast, warm-blded animals may be less sensitive t these effects because they can cl their bdies thrugh sweating. But the heat-aggressin assciatin has been dcumented in sme mnkeys, rats and dgs. Even fr warm-blded animals, warmth speeds metablic rates, and calrie lss may be wrsened by the energy needed t cl their bdies. When the pririty is getting mre calries, less energy may g tward maintaining scial behavirs and managing aggressin.
There is indeed sme evidence that heat can affect brain chemistry and cnnectivity, ptentially leading t aggre ssive behavir, says envirnmental neurscientist Kim Meidenbauer.“Uncmfrtable, stressful heat affects a numb er f psychlgical and physilgical prcesses that can lead t heightened aggressin,” she says.
While scientists investigate the underlying mechanisms and imprtant questins such as whether aggressin disappears nce animals get used t heat, they' re als thinking abut pssible cnsequences f the heat-aggressin relatinship as the wrld warms.
What was the aim f the experiment n salamanders?
T cnclude hw they behave in a stream.
T prve that they becme aggressive in heat.
T find hw they respnd t rising temperatures.
T figure ut hw they drive their ppnents away.
What des the underlined phrase“dials up” in paragraph 4 prbably mean?
A. Balances.B. Bsts. C. stps. D. Disturbs.
What is the prbable reasn fr the heightened aggressin in warm-blded animals?
They becme mre scial.B. They fail t cl dwn.
C. They prefer fighting in heat.D. They need mre energy.
Which f the fllwing is the best title fr the text?
Cld-blded Animals' Scial BehavirB. Heat Increases Animal Aggressin
C. Temperature's Effect n Human CrimeD. Climate Change Influences Animals

The St. Helena gumwd has a very interesting appearance. Its trunk bends and its branches frm umbrella- like shapes. It has many leaves which grw in bunches in the shape f hands. It takes each tree arund30 years t reach its full height f abut eight metres.
The tree hasn't always been s rare. Prblems began when a trading cmpany first settled there. The island's new cmers used the trees fr fuel, but the gats they brught with them caused even greater damage. They fed n the yung trees, stpping them frm being able t develp fully. Frtunately, sme trees survived. Althugh ther plants were starting t take ver the trees' habitat, sme trees were grwing ut f the cracks f rck walls. These were the nly trees that were nt affected and s the gumwd didn't disappear frm the island cmpletely.
