Tidewater
Tidewater areas feature frests with unique trees such as the bald cypress. Sweet gum trees, an eastern Virginia species, have every single clr n ne tree. Central and Suthside Virginia
Central and Suthside Virginia are dminated by diverse frests f cniferus (松柏科的) trees that d nt change clr, such as pine trees and leaf-drpping trees such as aks and hickries. It was the summer befre junir year. I was a waitress at a little restaurant. My duties were straightfrward: Take rders, deliver fd and clean tables. I gt really gd at managing multiple tasks, and having a lt f respnsibilities made me mre respnsible.
These values and skills are what numerus studies hld up as the imprtant reasns why teenagers shuld wrk during the summer. They’re what teachers mentin when they encurage us t get jbs. I develped thse skills. But I dn’t think that’s the main benefit high schl students get frm wrking.
S much happened in the interstitial (空隙的) time and spaces between ur rles f waitress, ck, and custmer. This is where I think the value f a high schl jb lies: learning hw t frm cmmunity with peple I never wuld have therwise knwn.
High schl students spend abut seven hurs a day in classes, then ften stay afterward fr schl-spnsred sprts r activities. It’s nt necessarily a bad thing t be wrapped up in schl. But what I find is that a jb can serve as a relief frm the academic tasks f high schl.
I think high schl students generally attach mre imprtance t high schl educatin t be admitted int clleges, thus becming mre tense and willing t cnsume mre time t study. I als think that the lack f bredm cmes int play. With phnes and the Internet, teens never have t be bred again. Why get a smetimes-bring jb t ease bredm?
But the peple I met at the restaurant taught me that yu can becme friends with thse decades lder than yu and strangers wh have nne f the same interests r hbbies as yu d. They taught me that yu can wildly disagree with smene and still respect them, still learn frm them, and still lve them.

A. It was equally stressful.
B. It felt like a welcme break.
C. It helped imprve her grades.
D. It was physically challenging.
6. What des paragraph 5 mainly talk abut?
A. The academic perfrmance f high schl students.
B. The ways high schl students scialize at schl.
C. The cmmn hbbies amng high schl students.
D. The reasns fr high schl students nt wrking.
7. What is the main purpse f the text?
A. T advise n hw t relieve bredm.
B. T stress the develpment f jb skills.
C. T highlight the benefits f student jbs.

When a plant is pressed by smething, it desn’t keep quiet. Yu wn’t hear the plant’s cry because it’s in the ultrasnic (超声波的) range — t high-pitched fr human ears — but, fr decades, scientists have been using special devices t listen. Fr the first time, a team f researchers has dcumented that insects can hear and interpret plants’ sund pain signals.

When the scientists presented female mths with a chice between a dried-ut tmat plant and a fresh ne, the mths gathered t the fresh plant. In ne bx, they played recrdings f plants’ pain sunds, while the ther bx was silent. In the experiment, mths turned t the nisy bx, and scientists therize that it’s because the sunds suggested that they wuld find a living plant there. This preference vanished when the scientists deafened the mths, leading t the cnclusin that mths were listening t the plants befre they made their chices.
In anther experiment, the researchers again ffered the female mths a selectin f tw tmat plants. This time, bth plants were watered, but ne was near a speaker playing ultrasnic stress sunds. The result was that almst all the mths picked the quieter plant.
Tgether, these experiments tld the researchers that the mths were listening t and recgnizing sunds made by plants, and that they were using that acustic (听觉的) infrmatin t make decisins abut thse plants fr their reprductin.
Plant acustics is an area f grwing interest fr scientists, and primary wrk suggests that sund-making is widespread. Future research culd investigate the use f acustic mnitring t understand hw stress affects plant health and culd help with agricultural pest (害虫) cntrl.
