Last September, I drve t a prtected wetland near my hme in Oakland, Califrnia. It was the first time that I had gne smewhere merely t watch birds. Since this unique jurney, I’ve seen 452 species, including 307 this year alne.
In sme birding circles, peple claim anyne wh lks at birds is a birder. I’ve cared abut birds and ther animals fr my entire life, and I’ve written abut them thrughut my tw decades as a science writer, but I mark the mment when I specifically chse t devte time and energy t them as the mment I became a birder.
Birding has significantly increased the time spent utdrs. It has mtivated me t explre Oakland in ways I never wuld have. While birding, I seem impervius t heat, cld, hunger and thirst. My senses fcus nly n the present, and my head becmes extremely untrubled. I als feel a much deeper cnnectin t the natural wrld, which I have lng written abut but always remained slightly distant frm.
These recent years have taught me that I’m smaller when I’m nt actively lking after myself, that I have value fr my wrld and my cmmunity beynd ceaseless prductin, and that pursuits like birding that encurage jy, wnder and bnd with places are nt sidebars t a fulfilled life but the essence.
It’s easy t perceive birding as smething yu d when yu’re nt wrking, nt being prductive, and even an escape frm reality. Instead, fr me, birding means absrbing myself in the present mment: my thughts quiet, my senses heightened, and I respnd t real, bservable events in nature with fcused awareness withut being distracted (使分心) by small, unimprtant matters. I dn’t need t knw wh the main characters are n scial media and what everyne is cmmenting n them, when I can instead spend an hur trying t lcate a rare bird.
      4. Why did the authr think the jurney t the wetland special?
      A. He prtected bird species there.B. He fell in lve with birding again.
      C. He made his true start as a birder.D. He cmpleted his writing during it.

      A. A cmplete engagement with reality.B. A temprary escape frm busy life.
      C. A training in fcus and bservatin.D. A substitute fr nline activities.

There is an academic department at Arizna State University that may surprise many peple: Mre than 90% f undergraduates that have dne a lcal internship (实习工作) are emplyed when they graduate. Students wh study these disciplines can expect t d a lt f writing, critical thinking, clse reading and discussin. All f these are skills that develp a persn’s ability t see a prblem frm many different angles and cmmunicate persuasively.
Fr sme careers, an undergraduate degree in the humanities is a clear advantage. Billy Dunaway, chair f the philsphy department at the University f Missuri, says his students pursue careers in many fields, including business, public plicy, insurance and cmputer science. Fr students planning t apply t law schl, the way philsphy is taught — thrugh the Scratic methd, where the prfessr leads with a questin which develps int a back-and-frth discussin and smetimes debate — prepares them well. Als, philsphy majrs scre better in the Law Schl Admissin Test, n accunt f the fact that the test is essentially a lgic test and many classes in law schl are taught using the same Scratic methd.

      C. Undergraduates have varius majr chices.
      D. Humanities partly gain increasing recgnitin.
      10. Which might be a fcus f the humanities?
      A. Persuasive writing.B. Crss-disciplinary integratin.
      C. Cultural understanding.D. Multidimensinal prblem-slving.
      11. Why can philsphy benefit students planning t apply t law schl?
      A. It imprves their lgical abilities.B. It cvers knwledge f different fields.
      C. It emphasizes their critical thinking.D. It fllws law schl’s teaching methd.
      D
Statistically speaking, yu’ve prbably already pressed a like buttn several times tday. If yu’re under 20 years ld, yu may press it even mre. Perhaps yu recently psted n scial media platfrms and are eagerly checking as the like cunt rises n yur phne. But what makes the like buttn s appealing t us? Accrding t Nichlas Christakis, a scilgist and physician at Yale University, it is because “the like buttn is built, in a very deep and distant way, n the back f evlutinary (进化的) bilgy”.
All animals learn and evlve as they interact with a challenging wrld, but nly certain f them have the ability t learn frm the experience f ther individuals. “Scial learning” shwed great evlutinary benefits, allwing human ancestrs t raise their chances f survival by aviding the mistakes they saw thers making, and cpying the successful mves.
This helps explain why human beings are ften affected by “hmphily” (同质偏好), a preference fr peple we cnsider as similar t urselves. Just as birds f a feather flck tgether (物以类聚), a vast amunt f research has shwn that humans have a deep-seated preference t respnd psitively t sameness. This tendency can lead t prejudice, but it is als cnnected t humans’ pwerful advantage f scial learning.
There are ther cnsequences f an evlved scial learning ability. They include ur habits f expressing gratitude and acknwledging — essentially saying “thank yu fr letting me learn frm yu”. Because we are happy t get clues abut threats and t gain pprtunities, we receive knwledge in a fashin that will encurage mre f it t cme ur way. In turn, we as givers respnd t that psitive cnfirmatin. It’s what keeps us sharing what we discver.
All this explains why we have grwn t welcme liking and being liked. It’s just nt pssible fr smething t becme s ppular withut being cnnected with smething fundamental in ur bilgy.
