After prmising t recnsider his future, Juan surprised me the next mrning during my jg by appearing n my lawn, declaring cheerfully, “I’ve decided t take yur AP class.”

Ggle Translate has imprved significantly ver the years. Initially, it relied n statistical machine translatin (SMT), which analyzed many translated texts t predict the mst likely translatins. Hwever, in recent years, Ggle has switched t neural (神经的) machine translatin (NMT), which uses deep learning mdels t imprve accuracy by understanding cntext rather than just individual wrds.
The system wrks by translating entire sentences instead f translating wrd by wrd. This prduces mre natural-sunding results, especially fr Eurpean languages, which share similar structures. Hwever, fr mre cmplex language pairs, particularly thse with majr grammatical differences, the accuracy is lwer.
Several studies have been cnducted t measure the accuracy f Ggle Translate, including research frm the UCLA Medical Center. The results shw that while the tl wrks well with cmmnly spken languages, it has difficulty with cmplex sentence structures and less cmmnly translated texts. A study by Slatr fund that Ggle Translate’s accuracy largely depends n the specific language pairs. Fr example, translatins between English and Spanish are ften better than translatins invlving Asian r African languages, where grammatical structures and cultural differences are very different.
Mrever, research frm Smartling indicates that Ggle Translate is mst suitable fr basic cmmunicatin rather than prfessinal r legal translatins. While it can prvide a general idea f a text’s meaning, it ften falls shrt f delivering crrect translatins fr specialized fields like medicine, law, r marketing.
Despite imprvements, Ggle Translate is nt free frm errrs. First, the tl smetimes translates phrases wrd-fr-wrd, resulting in unnatural r incrrect meanings. Secnd, sentence structures may be incrrect, especially in nn-Eurpean languages. Additinally, Ggle Translate has truble with ambiguus (含糊的) wrds r cultural differences that require deeper understanding. AI translatins ften lse the meaning f phrases that are unique t a specific culture.
      8. Hw des NMT differ frm SMT?
      A. It takes advantage f big data.B. It fcuses n structural changes.
      C. It gives diverse translatin results.D. It stresses relatins between lines.
      9. What can be inferred frm Ggle Translate-related studies?
      A. It wrks prly fr all nn-Eurpean languages.
      B. Sme language pairs prduce better results than thers.
      C. Its translatins in legal fields are fully reliable.
      D. Cultural differences have little effect n translatin.
      10. What des the underlined phrase “falls shrt f” mean in paragraph 4?
      A. Try ne’s best.B. Make a quick decisin.
      C. Fail t meet the standard.D. Fall a very shrt distance.
      11. What is an imprvement directin fr Ggle Translate?
      A. Fewer grammar mistakes.B. Unique user experiences.
      C. Quicker respnses.D. Offline translatin.
      D
Prehistric peple may have used firelight t create the illusin (错觉) f mvement in their art. An analysis f 50 carved stnes dug up in France suggests that when the stnes were placed near a fire, the light made the carved animals appear t mve, researchers reprted n April 20 in PLOS ONE. These stnes, r “plaquettes”, were discvered in the 1860s in a rck shelter called Mntastruc and were carved with images f animals such as hrses and deer. The site was used by Magdalenian peple, hunter-gatherers inhabiting the area between 23,000 and 14,000 years ag.
The researchers analyzed heat damage n the stnes, which indicated that they had been expsed directly t high temperatures fr prlnged perids, and created 3D mdels f the stnes. These mdels were imprted int virtual reality sftware and placed next t a virtual hearth (壁炉炉床) s that the heat-damaged areas were clsest t the flames, simulating (模仿) hw the stnes might have been arranged in real life. The researchers then bserved the visual effects under the virtual firelight.
“It was surprising t see hw dynamic the art was and hw much yur experience f the art changed with smething as simple as placing it near a fire,” says Andy Needham, an archaelgist at the University f Yrk in England. He suggests that the artists intentinally carved alng the cnturs (轮廓) f the rck t use the flickering firelight t create an impressin f meaningful mvement.
The finding enhances archaelgists' understanding f the relatinship between early humans’ artwrk and fire. Anther recent study fund that Stne Age humans created “hidden” art in dark caves that culd nly be lighted and viewed with apprpriate lighting.

      C. They shwed animals like hrses and deer.
      D. They were carved with animals in mtin.
      13. Why did experts create 3D mdels and put them near a virtual hearth?
      A. T measure the exact temperature f the flames.
      B. T repair the heat-damaged areas n the stnes.
      C. T identify the types f animals carved n the stnes.
      D. T cpy hw the stnes might have been used with fire.
      14. What des Andy Needham suggest abut the ancient artists?
      A. They preferred t wrk in dark caves.
      B. They had a deep understanding f visual effects.
      C. They avided carving near the edges f the stnes.
      D. They relied n firelight while carving the stnes.
      15. What is a suitable title fr the text?
      A. The Effect f Firelight n Ancient Art Perceptin
