S, this is such a small way t give kids back their cntrl.”
Fr Emily Balliet, whse hme burned dwn in the wildfires, the wrk f the LA Lst Stuffy Prject has brught“light”t her family during what she described as a“dark time”.The grup gave a stuffed gift, named Hrn, t Balliet ’s 4-year-ld sn Yves t match the ne he nce had.“This was a reminder that there are gd peple ut there wh really want t ffer help in a thughtful way,” Balliet said. Skatebarding is mre than just a sprt; it ’s a mix f sunds and silence. A new study shws that sund is an imprtant, yet ften undervalued part f hw skatebarders cnnect with the activity. Skatebarders nt nly see their envirnment but als feel and hear it. Phts and vides may shw the amazing mves, but they dn ’t express the whle experience.
The sunds frm the city surfaces — the“skatesund”— are a key part f the skatebarding experience. These sunds enable skatebarders t check the success f their mves, test if surfaces are suitable fr skating, and send messages t thers arund them.
Hwever, the study intrduces an interesting idea — the“skatesund paradx ( 悖论) ”. Skatebarders are aware f the trubling nature f the nise they prduce and change their behavir accrdingly in certain situatins t make less nise. Skatebarders describe the sund f the sprt as bth unpleasant and pleasant.
Researchers frm the University f Exeter carried ut interviews with 18 adult skatebarders aged between 19 and 51 frm different places and experience levels. They fund that the skatesund made peple feel included, especially thse wh might feel left ut f mre traditinal and regular sprts. Interestingly, mst skatebarders were against the idea f listening t music thrugh headphnes ( 耳机) while skatebarding, viewing it as unfriendly. The sprt is cnsidered a scial activity, and wearing headphnes breaks the cnnectin with the grup and the verall experience.
Hwever, thse wh chse t listen t music thrugh headphnes while skatebarding had their reasns. Music helped with fcus fr sme skate- barders, while headphnes served as a scial barrier (障碍) fr thers, ffering them mre cnfidence.
The study shws that the skatebard is nt just a ty r sprts bject but an“ear under the feet”. Next time yu hear the sunds f wheels and the bard hitting the grund, think abut what skatebarders are listening t. They ’re nt simply making nise. Skatebarders are learning thrugh their senses, cnnecting with their friends, and perhaps, finding unusual peace in a nisy wrld.
What des the new study fcus n?
The health benefits f skatebarding practice.
The scial cnnectins between skatebarders.
The influence f skatebarding n city culture.
The rle f sund in skatebarding experiences.
Hw d skatebarders behave given the“skatesund paradx”?
Staying away frm nisy skating areas.
Paying attentin t sme simple mves.
Valuing yet trying t cntrl the sund.
Lwering the nise thrugh a grup effrt.
What did the findings frm the interviews shw abut the skatesund?
It des harm t hearing ability.B. It creates a sense f belnging.
C. It raises skatebarders ’cnfidence.D. It fits well with backgrund music.
What des the authr suggest peple d in the last paragraph?
Find peace in freestyle skatebarding.
Respect skatebarders’ training habits.
Recgnize the danger f skatebarding.
Cnsider the skatesund’s deeper meaning.
D
With a service life f 20 t 25 years, abut 5,000 wind turbines (涡轮机) will be taken ut f service each year. The Swedish energy cmpany Vattenfall has been wrried abut that. “Our larger ffshre wind farms are starting t reach the end f their life,”explained Vattenfall ’s directr Thmas Hjrt. “S we need t wrk ut what we d with these machines. We shuld create smething ut f them s that they can benefit the cmmunity and envirnment nce again. ”
Vattenfall’s designers decided that a tiny hme wuld be the best result. “There are different kinds f wind turbine mdels and all f them have their wn sizes,”designer Js de Krieger explained.“But this V80 turbine is ptimal fr design, as it is big enugh t live in and small enugh t mve n land. The tiny hme prvides enugh living space and a large enugh kitchen. It als huses a bathrm with a tilet. ”
Beynd that, it had t be smewhere that peple wuld want t live. The mdel was kept changeable s that peple culd add smething f their style. The utside can be painted in different clrs and dressed up with smething. Inside, peple can place tables and chairs freely and hang persnal artwrks t make the space feel cmfrtable.
A key pint is making sure the prduct can be prduced in large numbers. Krieger said that there are arund 10,000 V80 turbines in use s far. Hw- ever, any cmpany prducing these hmes wuld need cntinuus access t (使用……的机会) turbines, a requirement that seems hard t meet at present. Vattenfall is willing t give the parts and has received a lt f interest frm ther cmpanies, but n ne has started such a business, as n agreement has been decided yet.
Mrever, several cmpanies are planning t reuse ld wind turbine blades (叶片). Fr example, ReBlade will use them t build cverings fr its new electric car centers. Once the plan is allwed, the blades will create a cver fr the charging ( 充电) area. Given that ld wind turbine blades are difficult t recycle, this presents an excellent pprtunity t reduce waste.
Hw des Vattenfall hpe t deal with ld wind turbines?
Dnate many t research centers.
Turn them int histrical attractins.
Imprve their ability t prduce pwer.
Develp new purpses in a psitive way.
What des the underlined wrd“ptimal”in paragraph 2 prbably mean?
A. Safe.B. Interesting.C. Perfect.D. Challenging.
What makes the V80 mdel attractive t peple?
It serves different rles.B. It is pen t persnal design.
C. It has high-tech characteristics.D. It is great fr cmmunity events.
Which leads sme cmpanies t be unable t prduce tiny hmes?
Few skilled wrkers.B. High prductin csts.
C. Uncertainty abut market needs.D. Shrtage f dependable materials.

The next day, I said srry t Mike and pened an hnest cnversatin with him. I admitted that I had put t much pressure n him with my expectatins and that I had been mre f a judge than a supprter. Surprisingly, he said that he understd I nly wanted the best fr him. He shared hw much he enjyed having me there, nt t crrect him, but t supprt him and see his prgress. With this meaningful cnversatin, Mike’s spirits imprved greatly and we understd each ther better. And I realized I needed t make changes t be a better father.
A few weeks later, Mike gladly invited me t watch their practice. This time, I decided t deal with it differently. I just encuraged Mike t be mre cnfident, and cheered when he made gd plays. With sme active practice, he made several baskets successfully and ran t me with a big smile. Fr the first time, I was part f his wrld withut pushing him — just a prud dad sharing the mment. We’ve becme much mre cnnected since the practice. I have learned that the best supprt is t allw yur kids t enjy sprts and prgress in their wn way.
