In a new study, cnducted by Ohi State University, researchers set ut t explain why children ften gather mre infrmatin than they need t cmplete a task, explring new ways t slve it even when they knw the best slutin and have dne many times befre.

But, t his surprise, he fund that the mst likely reasn fr this “ver-explring” is that wrking memry is nt fully develped in children. Therefre, while adults can easily remember the best way t cmplete a task, children are frced t questin their ften-crrect memries and re-explre tasks they’ve dne befre.
Simply, children dn’t hld infrmatin they need t cmplete a task in their memry fr very lng, the study suggests.
Speaking abut ne f the tasks children were asked t cmplete in the study, where they were asked t identify an animal by uncvering parts f a hidden picture f it, Slutsky explained that even thugh it became bvius after a few tries that the tail was the easiest and quickest part t uncver in rder t identify the animal, the kids “just kept uncvering mre bdy parts befre they made their chice.”
“The children learned that ne bdy part will tell them what the creature is, but they may be cncerned that they dn’t remember crrectly. Their wrking memry is still under develpment,” Slutsky said. “They want t reslve this uncertainty by cntinuing t sample, by lking at ther bdy parts t see if they line up with what they think.”
The children in the study were aged between fur and six, with mre research set t uncver exactly when children’s wrking memry imprves and gives them the cnfidence t “act mre like adults d” when it cmes t cmpleting tasks.
