“Grwing up, I actually lived with my aunt wh had a visin prblem, and I watched as her eyesight declined ver time. And seeing that made me realize that there was a lack f technlgies ut there that were able t help thse with visual disabilities adapt t their circumstances,” said Gay.
Thrugh years f trial and errr, Tiffany develped a wearable device that uses LIDAR, a very cmmn type f sensr, t map an area and then uses vibratins (振动) t warn the wearer when there are bstacles and ther things in their path. As they get clser, the vibratins get strnger.
The technlgy n Tiffany’s visr appeals t mre than just the sense f tuch. She has the lights t indicate distance. As yu get clser, yu’ll see the light turn red. As yu get mderately far away, yu’ll see the light turn blue. And as yu get really far away, it shuld turn green. And the different lights symblize hw intense the vibratin may be.
Tiffany has been wrking n this prject fr the past three years. “A lt f crazy ideas, but in that time, I was able t create different mdels. I’ve been able t make it a lt mre efficient ver these past three years, and I’m als wrking n raising fund t get my patent.” said Gay.
Her inventin nw csts arund $200, which is quite reasnable fr medical assistance devices, but Tiffany wants t make it even mre accessible t peple. She said, “Decreasing the price is a significant change I want t make. But, what I really want is making it accessible t the cuntries where we have the highest percentage f peple wh are visually impaired.”

Many dg wners believe their pets understand and respnd nt nly t cmmands such as “sit” and “stay, ” but als t wrds referring t their favrite bjects. “Bring me yur ball” will ften result in exactly that. But science has had truble determining whether dgs really activate (激活) a mental image in their minds when they hear the name f an bject.
A new study has fund that beynd being able t respnd t cmmands like “rll ver, ” dgs can learn t cnnect wrds with specific bjects — a relatinship with language called referential understanding that had been unprven in dgs until nw.
The study invlved 18 dgs and a prcedure using electrdes (电极) attached t dgs’ heads t measure brain activity and register brain waves. Dg wners participating in the study wuld play a vice recrding in which they said the name f their dg’s ty — like “ball” — and then they wuld shw the dg an bject. The researchers measured the dgs’ brain activity when the bject in the recrding matched the bject that was displayed, and als when it differed.
“We expected that if a dg really understands the meaning f the bject’s wrd, it will expect t see that bject. And if the wner shws a different ne, there will be a s-called surprise reactin in the brain, ” Brs said.
The study fund a different brain pattern when the dgs were shwn an bject that matched the wrd, cmpared t when it didn’t — suggesting the animals frmed a mental image f an bject based n hearing the wrd fr it. The study supprts “theries f language evlutin (进化) which actually say that referential understanding is nt necessarily unique t humans,” added Magyari, an assciate prfessr at the University f Stavanger in Nrway.
While the study has received praise, sme experts have expressed dubts abut its findings. Behaviral scientist and prfessr f psychlgy, Clive Wynne, said in a pst nFacebk that he believes that all the study shws is that dgs respnd t stimuli (刺激) — but that they dn’t actually understand the meaning f specific wrds.
8. What has puzzled scientists abut dgs?
A. Hw dgs activate mental images in mind.B. Hw dgs respnd t their favrite bjects.
C. Whether dgs can cnnect wrds with bjects.D. Whether dgs can truly understand cmmands.
9. Hw did the researchers cnduct the study f dgs?
A. By bserving their interactins with wners.
B. By training them t identify specific bjects.
C. By mnitring their brain waves in different situatins.
D. By cmparing their reactins t different human vices.
10. In the study, surprise reactins in dg’s brain are caused by a mismatch between ________.
A. what they want and what they are givenB. what they hear and what they are shwn
C. what they are trained t d and what is testedD. what they are familiar with and what is displayed
11. What is Clive Wynne’s attitude tward the study’s findings?
A. Dubtful.B. Indifferent.C. Objective.D. Supprtive.

The Plastic Prblem: A Glbal Challenge
Envirnmental scientist Dr. Sarah Jhnsn nce jked that if aliens (外星人) visited Earth, they might think plastic bags were the planet’s dminant species. “These lightweight creatures cver land and sea, threat wildlife, and never truly disappear,” she said. Her wrds highlight a serius issue: humanity’s addictin t single-use plastics.
Plastic pllutin is widespread and cause a lt f damage and destructin. Every year, ver 8 millin tns f plastic waste enter the ceans, killing millins f marine animals. Sea turtles mistake plastic bags fr jellyfish, birds get tangled in fishing nets, and whales ingest micrplastics that accumulate in their stmachs. Micrplastics—tiny plastic particles smaller than a grain f rice—have even been fund in human bdies, ptentially harming ur health. Studies suggest they culd enter ur bldstream and rgans, causing lng-term risks. Plastic prductin als cntributes t climate change: manufacturing and dispsing f plastics release greenhuse gases, wrsening glbal warming. In fact, if plastic prductin cntinues at current rates, the industry culd accunt fr 20% f glbal il cnsumptin by 2050.
The cnvenience f plastic has cme at a high cst. In sme cuntries, plastic bags are used fr just minutes but take centuries t degrade. Many cities spend millins n cleanup effrts, while prer regins struggle t manage waste. Fr example, in castal twns in Sutheast Asia, plastic waste blcks drainage (排水) systems during rainy seasns, causing flds. In sme African cuntries, plastic bttles and bags litter streets and fields, attracting pests and spreading diseases. The ecnmic csts are astnishing: a recent reprt estimated that plastic pllutin csts the glbal ecnmy $13 billin annually in envirnmental damage and cleanup expenses.
Slutins exist, but they require actin. Bans n single-use plastics have been effective in sme places. Hwever, new technlgies are emerging. Additinally, reusable alternatives are affrdable and ec-friendly. “Change starts with individual chices,” says Jhnsn. “If we stp using dispsable plastics and demand sustainable ptins, we can save ur planet frm becming a plastic graveyard.” The time t act is nw. But gvernments, businesses, and cmmunities must als cperate. Tgether, we can turn the tide against this glbal challenge.
12. What des the wrd “dminant” in Paragraph 1 mst prbably mean?
A. well-cntrlledB. fastest-grwing
C. mst cmmnD. highly intelligent
13. Accrding t the passage, which f the fllwing is a direct effect f plastic pllutin?
A. Glbal temperatures rise due t plastic prductin.
B. Recycling prgrams becme mre expensive.
C. Cities spend less mney n waste management.
D. Flds ccur frequently in all castal areas.
14. What can be inferred frm the example f Sutheast Asia in Paragraph 3?
A. Plastic waste is the main cause f flds wrldwide.
B. Wealthier cuntries have better waste management systems.
C. Rainy seasns make plastic pllutin mre visible.
D. Pr regins face greater challenges in handling plastic waste.
15. What is Dr. Sarah Jhnsn’s attitude twards plastic pllutin?
A. She believes plastic is necessary fr human cnvenience.
B. She is wrried abut its lng-term effects n the envirnment.
C. She dubts the effectiveness f plastic recycling methds.
D. She is ptimistic that plastic prblems will slve naturally.
