When she was yung, Sylvia Clt-Lacay nticed she was particularly fascinated with n- screen stries. Media ffered an escape when life was hard.
Watching Glee, she was thrilled t see a character wh used a wheelchair like her — until she learned the rle was played by an actr wh was nt disabled. “I remember feeling s heartbrken and betrayed (背叛), fr n reasn ther than the fact that I felt seen fr nce as a 10- year- ld watching Glee, and the pwer f that,” says Clt-Lacay.
Nw, Clt-Lacay is graduating frm Stanfrd with a degree in film and media studies and is heading t Hllywd with a passin fr increasing disability representatin and diversity in general. “Representatin matters, and I als think that diverse strytelling is what is mst cmpelling (令人信服的),” she said.
Representatin shaped Clt-Lacay’s path t Stanfrd. As a disabled Latina girl, she struggled t imagine ging t cllege, in part because she never saw adult wheelchair users in the media. In high schl, she met anther Stanfrd student wh was als a wheelchair user at a cnference. Suddenly, a new stry felt pssible.
When she arrived at Stanfrd, Clt-Lacay knew she was ften the first visibly disabled student her prfessrs and peers had interacted with. Her parents had taught her t advcate fr herself, and while she desn’t claim the label “activist”, she asks fr what she needs.
“Yes, there’s smething that is in my DNA that makes my bdy different frm ther peple’s. But really, what makes me disabled is that peple treat me differently, and I d nt have equal access t resurces,” she said.
She brught this perspective t her Stanfrd experience. Fr her senir thesis (论文), she wrte a screenplay examining hw grwing up with a disability impacts ne’s relatinship with neself and ne’s understanding f the wrld.
Clt-Lacay aims t becme an agent fr screenwriters and film directrs. She hpes that sharing her stry gives thers the example she wished fr when she was yung.

Histry is ne f thse subjects that culd be endless if we had enugh time. There has always been an understanding that we learn histry t stp it frm being repeated, in a sense learning frm past mistakes.
Hwever, as we have discvered, this is nt entirely true. With the invasive and vilent events still in existence in many parts f the wrld, we can see that humanity has nt learnt frm its past. Histry shws itself t repeat and it is imprtant t learn histry t see these chatic(混乱的) repetitins. Histry is nt just abut strife—wars, revlutins, and struggles—but it is als a plitical and philsphical tpic.
A man named Peter Turchin has spent many years investigating hw we can use histry t ur wn benefit. In 2003 Turchin published his bk “histrical dynamics”. The bk demnstrates his wrkings in which he shws the secular (世俗的) state f France and Russia frm their rigins t the 18th century. Nt lng after his bk was published Turchin funded clidynamics. Clidynamics wrks t shw the underlying patterns we can bserve in histry and mdel them in a way t make scientific estimates f hw the future may play ut. His use f mathematics has allwed scientists t develp a greater understanding f hw plitical settings may ccur r hw scieties will grw.
Of curse, it is simply impssible fr any histrian t predict the future, but by using this “big data” apprach, Turchin has allwed individuals t lcate patterns and use critical thinking t help make judgments abut what the future may hld. Turchin as well as many thers have used histry in an imprtant way t help future generatins.
As time passes, the databases will imprve, highlighting mre patterns and similarities, unavidably helping t make these predictins mre reliable. Culd this apprach t using data be the future f histry and wuld we as a sciety be able t shw the repetitins in humanity?
What des the underlined wrd “strife” in paragraph 2 mean?
      A. reflectin.B. Cnclusin.C. Accunt.D. Cnflict.
      29. What can be inferred frm Turchin’s research?
      A. It intends t reveal state rigins.B. It jumps ut f histrical cycles.
      C. It cnfirms histry’s mirrr values.D. It shws similarities between maths and histry.
      30. Hw des Turhin’s apprach benefit histrians?
      A. By prviding first-hand data.B. By ensuring precise future predictins.
      C. By helping predict future trends.D. By fueling insights int certain events.
      31. What is the authr’s attitude tward predicting the future?
      A. Favrable. B. Objective.C. Uncncerned. D. Oppsed.
      D (选必一Unit 3 Cnservatin)
Butterflies are sensitive t envirnmental changes, meaning they are imprtant indicatrs f ecsystem health, but they are in decline. New research suggests butterfly numbers can be bsted by making small changes t rad verges (边缘).
While mst studies n rad verges and butterflies have fcused n temperate climates with natural plants in rural areas, new research frm Nanyang Technlgical University (NTU) examined planted vegetatin alng majr rads in big cities f Singapre.
Researchers surveyed 101 rad verges, each at least 30m lng, lcated alng majr rads with speed limits between 50 km/h and 70 km/h, and planted with nn-native bushes. They fund verges with a mixture f different flwering plant species directly increased the ttal number f butterflies and butterfly species. “A greater diversity f flwering plants can ffer a variety f nectar (花蜜) surces fr butterflies. This can attract mre species f butterflies, especially thse that prefer a brad range f nectar frm different flwers,” explains Assciate Prfessr Eleanr Slade frm NTU’s Asian Schl f the Envirnment.
Selective thinning and less frequent cutting als benefited butterfly numbers and species diversity, with the verges seen as paths linking the insects t ther green spaces. Slade says this culd be because a greater variety f plant heights within rad verges creates different micr-climatic cnditins-variatins in temperature, humidity (湿度) and light intensity - that appeal t different butterflies. Mre unifrm plant heights created by frequently cutting verge plants can reduce the ppulatin f the butterflies and species richness and ffer less prtectin.
The study als shwed busy rads negatively affect butterflies and butterfly species, particularly when traffic density (密度) is higher; this typically ccurs when rad speed limits are higher, and vehicles travel faster. Rads with mre traffic als have greater vehicle pllutin, which can affect bth plants and butterflies.
But the researchers say the benefits f rad verges culd cancel ut these effects if traffic speeds are prper. They fund that fr rads with speed limits f up t 70 km/h, the bad effects f traffic n butterflies culd be reduced by increasing the variety f flwering plants n rad verges and allwing them t grw t varying heights.
      32. What makes the study f NTU different frm previus nes?
      A. It takes climate change int accunt.B. It analyzes butterfly behavir in the frest.
      C. It fcuses n ecsystems alng rural radsides.D. It investigates grwn plants in the urban area.
      33. Why is Eleanr Slade mentined in paragraph 3?
      A. T explain research methds.B. T prpse strategies fr imprvement.
      C. T back the findings f the new study.D. T prve the city is mre suitable fr research.
      34. Hw can traffic’s negative effects n butterflies be reduced?
      A. By frequently cutting verge plants.
      B. By planting diverse flwering species.
      C. By building barriers between rads and plants.
      D. By permitting plants t grw t a specific height.
      35. What can we cnclude frm the passage?
      A. Increasing plant height alne is sufficient t prtect butterflies frm the negative effects f traffic.
      B. Traffic pllutin is the primary factr causing the decline f butterfly ppulatins in cities.
      C. Butterfly species in rural areas are less affected by rad verges than thse in urban areas.
      D. Prper management f rad verges can help imprve butterfly diversity despite urban traffic.

Je lived alne in a small wden huse. All the neighbrhd children were afraid f him. We ran away when he came ut f his huse. He kept his car parked utside the fence that separated the rad frm his tiny yard. His car was nicer than mst cars in the small twn, and he kept it sptless. He even cleaned the dr handle when he clsed the dr and lcked it. When I played n the rad with the ther children, we tried t stay away frm Je’s car.
One day, I cheerfully rde my newly btained used bicycle back frm the lcal grcery stre. The bicycle had n basket, s I had t ride with ne hand carrying the grceries. While I was appraching Je’s yard, I hit a mud puddle (泥坑) near his car. I was s cncerned abut splashing (溅) mud n his clean car that I lst cntrl. I panicked as my handlebars slid dwn the side f Je’s car. Then I fell hard nt the grund with my bicycle.
Je walked ut f his huse, where he had been sitting at the windw and watching. He was lking at the big scratch (刮痕) n his perfectly kept car while I was lying n the grund with my knee bleeding. Then I culd feel his eyes examining me and my bicycle, but I was t scared t lk up. My fear grew when Je asked me t g with him.
He led me int his huse while hlding t the back f my T-shirt. He rdered me t sit dwn befre he went int anther rm. The nly thing in the rm was a small table with ne chair near the windw, where he had seated me. The flr seemed very ld, but it was sptless. The ceiling was s lw that I culd have reached it with a shrt jump. “Is he ging t trap me here?” I thught t myself, my heart raced s fast that I paid n attentin t my pain.

      应用文参考范文:
As is vividly prtrayed in the picture, ccupied in chatting n the Internet, a by refuses t talk with his mther. The mther can d nthing but stand behind the by, depressed.
It is the exact reflectin f lack f cmmunicatin between parents and children. Several reasns cntribute t it. First, the Internet prvides us with a place where we can cmmunicate with different peple, in which case we are addicted t the virtual wrld and keep ur distance frm peple arund us. Besides, pressure frm study drives us t seek excitement n the Internet. Als, parents, busy with their wrk, spare little time t stay with their children, resulting in the less cmmunicatin.
As far as I’m cncerned, sme effective measures shuld be taken by parents and children. In terms f children, we shuld cut back n the time when we play cmputers and be aware f the imprtance f cmmunicatin with parents. In additin, parents and children shuld exchange their ideas and feelings regularly. Interesting tpics are recmmended s that bth parents and teenagers lve t talk abut.
      读后续写参考范文:
I was thinking abut what t d when Je came back t me carrying a first aid kit. My heart punded, expecting sharp wrds(现在分词做伴随动作). But Je said nthing at first. He bent dwn, gently lifted my scratched leg, and began cleaning the wund(动作链描写). “Yu’ve gt t take better care f yurself,” he muttered, his vice lw(独立主格刻画人物). “And be mre mindful! N ne-handed biking—keep bth hands n the handlebars! (衔接原文)” His wrds were firm but nt cruel. As I watched him cncentrating n wrapping the bandage, a strange warmth replaced my fear(心理描写). Maybe Je wasn’t the mean neighbr we always thught (衔接原文). Maybe he just didn’t shw kindness the way thers did. Feeling deeply guilty(现在分词做伴随动作), I felt tears welling up in my eyes as guilt verwhelmed me. “I want t make up fr the truble,” I said sftly, “Maybe I culd help fix yur car r run errands fr yu?” Je lked at me in surprise, then ndded slwly. “Let’s talk tmrrw,” he said, his expressin unreadable(独立主格刻画人物神态).
The next day, I rde my basketless bicycle t Je’s, ready t d grcery shpping fr him. He examined the bike first, running a hand alng the frame and checking the tires(现在分词做伴随动作). Satisfied(过去分词做adj主语补语), he pened his trunk and pulled ut a shiny new basket. “This ne’s fr yu,” he said while carefully attaching it(状从的省略). “Yu’ll help me with grceries this mnth—and it’s yurs.” I stared, stunned by his unexpected genersity(过去分词做后置定语). “Thanks,” I mumbled, eyes wide(独立主格刻画人物神态). Befre I left, he added, “Take care f that leg. N rushing arund.” Riding hme(现在分词做伴随动作), I felt the wind in my face and a new feeling in my chest—respect, nt fear(补充说明). Je hadn’t punished me. He’d guided me(短句递进), shwing(现在分词做伴随动作) that respnsibility isn’t abut punishment, but abut grwing thrugh kindness and effrt(主旨升华).
