Last year, my dad was diagnsed with amytrphic lateral sclersis (肌萎缩性侧索硬化症) — a prgressive and fatal disease. It’s already taken my dad’s ability t talk and eat nrmally. There is n cure. When he tld me abut his diagnsis, I knew tw things instantly: I wanted t spend as much time with him as pssible and if I was ging t be living in my childhd hme, I wuld need a hbby.
Thugh never skilled at crafts, I’ve always fund cmfrt in textiles. My mther, wh had knitted a granny-square blanket in her twenties, was game t re-learn hw t d it. In her yuth, Granny squares became the after-dinner rutine and sn I was churning ut dzens f multiclred squares. And it felt like this prject was, maybe, helping?
“It’s incredibly mindful,” says Gabrielle Gatt, a death educatr in ur cmmunity. “That’s part f really sitting with smething.”
On a Tuesday evening, Gatt sets up a snack table inside the cemetery`s church, preparing fr the start f her mnthly interactive wrkshp, “Grieving & Weaving. ” “I think it was imprtant t have that in the name as well,” she says. “We are ging t talk abut grief, death and lss. But we're als ging t create happy memries tgether, eating and drinking a bunch f things.”
It’s a prject that had been sitting in her clset fr mnths. Earlier this year, after bth her grandmthers died, she lst what she calls the “knitting light” fr a while. Rafferty, wh is als a therapist, says she almst skipped the wrkshp t stay hme with her dg, but she’s glad she didn't — being here is therapeutic.
As Gatt says, after all, it's nt the end prduct that's the therapy. It’s the act f ding it. “A big thing with grief is mving thrugh it bth mentally and physically,” Gatt says. “And that's exactly what we d here. We bring smething that is maybe heavy n ur minds r ur hearts. And then we wrk with ur hands. We wrk with it, and we wrk tgether.”

      A. Cautius.B. Supprtive.C. Critical.D. Dismissive.
      7. What is the key t the therapy prcess accrding t Gatt?

Picture this, yu win tw tickets t a sld-ut cncert and eagerly text t ask yur friends if they’d like t jin. There cmes their respnse “Maybe.” Yur md immediately turns, fr yu need t wait fr their decisins befre yu can figure ut yur plans fr the cncert.
If yu’ve experienced anything like the abve anecdte, yu’re nt alne. Peple respnding “maybe” t invitatins is a cmmn yet annying aspect f scial life. What ges n in peple’s heads when they aren’t sure whether t accept an invitatin? Scial invitatins can be a delicate dance. Peple ften misread what smene extending an invitatin wants t hear and verestimate an inviter’s likelihd f preferring a “maybe” ver a “n.” Mrever, they fail t realize hw much mre disrespected peple feel when they receive a “maybe” in respnse t their invitatin.
Naturally, we wanted t figure ut why this awkward dynamic plays ut. We fund that it’s largely due t smething called “mtivated reasning.” Mtivated reasning ccurs when a persn interprets infrmatin in a biased (有偏差的) way t suit their wn wishes. In ther wrds, invitees cnvince themselves that inviters want t hear “maybe” instead f “n” because a “maybe” is better fr the invitees, allwing them t leave their ptins pen. Besides, peple tend t verestimate the negative cnsequences f saying “n” t invitatins, thinking it will upset, anger and disappint inviters.
Hwever, there were certain situatins that made peple mre cmfrtable saying “n” t an invitatin. When recipients f an invitatin put themselves in the shes f the persn extending the invitatin, they are mre likely t realize that they’d prbably prefer a definite answer. When the participants get invited t d smething they didn’t want t d, they had n desire t keep their ptins pen. The mtivated reasning then became irrelevant.
While navigating scial situatins can be tricky, being direct and definite is smetimes best. It might reduce yur ptins. But it’ll keep thse wh invite yu frm being left uncertain and maybe they’ll still think f yu when the next cncert cmes t twn.
      8. Why is the cncert anecdte mentined at the beginning?
      A. T explain the backgrund f the invitatin.
      B. T stress the imprtance f quick replies.
      C. T encurage immediate decisin- making.
      D. T intrduce a cmmn scial situatin.
      9. What is the main reasn fr the respnse f “maybe” t an invitatin?
      A. A biased interpretatin f scial cues.
      B. A desire fr harmnius cmmunicatin.
      C. An underestimatin f refusal cnsequence.
      D. An understanding f the inviter’s expectatin.
      10. What is the authr’s suggestin in the last paragraph?
      A. Keeping yur ptins pen fr better plans.
      B. Accepting invitatins t maintain friendships.
      C. Priritizing clear respnse ver pen ptins.
      D. Thinking twice befre refusing an invitatin.

      D. “Maybe”: A Perfect Slutin t Invitatins

Yur behavir tday culd affect yur brain activity in tw weeks’ time, new research suggests. These findings have significant implicatins fr ur mental health as well as ur attentin, cgnitin and memry.
Our behavir and ur brains are clsely linked. And yet, the majrity f studies nly take a snapsht f ur lived experience. “We knw little abut the respnse f brain functinal cnnectivity t envirnmental, physilgical, and behaviral changes n different timescales, frm days t mnths,” said Triana, a prfessr frm Aalt University.
T investigate these effects, Triana and his clleagues tracked their wn brain activity and behavir ver a five-mnth perid using a cmbinatin f brain scans, wearable devices and their smartphnes. “We studied brain activity using FMRI (functinal magnetic resnance imaging), sleep and physical activity patterns using a smart-ring, heart and respiratin rates using a smartwatch, and md using questinnaires prmpted n their smartphne,” Triana said.
Triana’s brain was scanned twice a week, fllwed by qualitative (定性的) data frm md surveys. The team identified tw distinct brain patterns in respnse t specific behavirs: a shrt-term wave lasting less than a week and a lng-term wave lasting up t 15 days. The shrt-term wave was reflective f rapid respnses t a behavir, like struggling t fcus after a pr night’s sleep. Meanwhile, the lng-term wave suggests mre gradual, lasting effects f a particular behavir. These were particularly apparent in areas f the brain tied t attentin and memry. In ther wrds, a wrkut r restless night frm tw weeks ag culd still be affecting yu — psitively r negatively — tday.
While this study nly shws the brain activity f ne individual, the researchers hpe that it demnstrates the imprtance f studying brain activity in the cntext f ur wider lifestyle and behavir, rather than a single snapsht in the lab. “This research is imprtant because it prvides a mre cmprehensive and dynamic view f brain functin, highlighting the lng-term impact f everyday behaviur n brain health,” Triana said.
      12. What inspired Triana t cnduct the study?
      A. Her clleagues’ prir research findings.
      B. A gap in lng-term brain behavir study.
      C. A demand t upgrade digital equipment.
      D. The wide use f brain scanning technlgy.
      13. Hw did the researchers carry ut their study?
      A. By tracking the participant’s sleeping pattern.
      B. By analyzing brain data and persnal md reprt.
      C. By using nly data frm the mst advanced scanner.
      D. By interviewing participants hw they felt after scanning.
      14. What is the key finding f the Triana’s research?
      A. Behavirs have lasting effects n brains.
      B. Brain scans can best track md changes.
      C. Shrt-term waves matter mre fr memry.
      D. Pr sleep affects the brain fr ver 15 days.
      15. What is expected f future brain research?
      A. Mre precise labratry shts.B. Brain activity in real-life situatins.
      C. Prmtin f brain functin and health.D. Shrt-term effects f specific behavirs.

Why D Electric Vehicles Make Peple Mre Carsick?
With electric vehicles (EVs) gaining significant ppularity glbally — accunting fr 22% f new car sales in 2024 — many passengers reprt experiencing increased mtin sickness cmpared t traditinal vehicles. Scial media platfrms are filled with such persnal experiences, particularly frm thse riding in passenger r back seats. ___16___
A primary reasn fr this phenmenn is the lack f familiarity with EV mtin patterns. As William Emnd, a PhD researcher in France specializing in mtin sickness, explains, peple’s brains heavily depend n past experiences t predict and interpret mtin. ___17___ Fr instance, experienced drivers naturally expect acceleratin after hearing engine revs in fuel-pwered cars, but EVs perate withut such familiar auditry signals.
___18___ Recent research indicates that specific seat vibratins and the cmplete absence f traditinal engine nise in EVs cntribute significantly t mtin discmfrt. Furthermre, the regenerative braking systems — innvative technlgy that transfrms kinetic energy (动能) int battery pwer — cause an unusually gradual slwdwn. ___19___
Beynd this, mtin sickness fundamentally ccurs when the brain receives cntradictry sensry signals abut bdy mvement. The inner ear, visual cues, and physical sensatins send mixed messages t the brain, creating what experts call a “neural mismatch”. ___20___ This mechanism explains why drivers themselves rarely experience carsickness — they cntrl and predict the vehicle’s mvements.
      A. Such lng-term cnflict can trigger mtin sickness symptms.
      B. Anther cntributing factr is that EV-specific features add t the prblem.
      C. Sme manufacturers are imprving suspensin systems t minimize vibratins.
      D. Drivers usually dn’t experience carsickness due t their cntrl ver the vehicle.
      E. This technlgy lengthens the stpping prcess and may wrsen feelings f sickness.
      F. Withut previus EV experience, the brain has t struggle t estimate frces accurately.
      G. In regard t this phenmenn, researchers have identified several scientific explanatins.

It’s my graduatin day! The ceremny was t be held in a large auditrium dwntwn n a damp December afternn. As I prepared fr this imprtant day, chsing a simple black dress and even putting n makeup — bth unusual fr me — my mind was ccupied with anxiety rather than excitement.
Due t my neurlgical cnditin (神经系统疾病) that affected my mbility and crdinatin (协调性), the upcming ceremny filled me with fear. I had learned that I wuld need t negtiate a flight f stairs during the prceedings. The mere thught f walking acrss the stage was terrifying enugh, but the additinal challenge f stairs seemed impssible. T make matters wrse, I wuld have t shake hands with my prfessrs and receive my diplma with my right hand, which has limited cntrl due t my cnditin These seemingly small details felt like impssible bstacles
Cnsumed by fear, I called Sally in tears, telling her I culdn’t g thrugh with it. She had been my ntetaker thrughut university because f my cnditin, but she was far mre than that. We had been thrugh many rugh spts during the past tw years. We tk all ur classes tgether, studied tgether, and edited each ther’s wrk.
Sally listened patiently as I pured ut my anxieties. Then, she respnded with determined supprt. “Yu are walking, damn it!” she declared firmly. She prmised t handle everything and made me prmise t shw up at the auditrium. Thugh still fearful, I splashed cld water n my tear-stained face, tuched up my makeup, and whispered t myself, “I’m ding this.”
When I arrived at the auditrium, the reality f thse frightening stairs hit me again. Just as panic began t seize me. Sally fund me immediately. She hugged me tightly and assured me, “I have it all wrked ut. It’s ging t be fine.” T my surprise, I nticed many f my classmates gathered nearby, their faces filled with warm smiles and encuraging nds. At this, I felt a surge f strength flwing thrugh me, thugh I still culdn’t imagine hw I wuld manage the challenges ahead.
