A wrried mther sits n the cuch in my ffice. Her 15-year-ld sn’s grades have started t drp. “The nly thing he seems t care abut is the wrestling team,” she tells me. “He’ll wake up at 5 a.m. t train, but he isn’t ding his hmewrk. My husband and I are thinking we shuld take him ff the team until his grades turn arund.”
As bth an educatr and the parent f three kids, I certainly understand this thught fr I have heard many versins f this cnversatin ver the past 30 years. When a child encunters difficulty, it’s cmmn fr parents t feel like they dn’t have enugh slutins. Yet my experience wrking with children, alng with plenty f research n tughness, has taught me a valuable lessn: When a kid is falling shrt, punishing them by taking away the thing they care mst abut is nt the way t mtivate them.
Raising humans is an imperfect prcess. The current parenting landscape — fr many families — is defined by an ever-present wrry ver achievement. Sme parents’ eyes may g first t the lwest grade n the reprt card. And then they might naturally prepare t hire tutrs r help kids develp new study habits t crrect the perceived weakness. Yet decades f research have shwn that a key t raising capable yung peple isn’t t target their struggles. It’s t recgnize and build n their strengths — t identify what experts in child develpment call “islands f cmpetence”.
That term suggests that every child pssesses distinct areas f ability, and it is educatrs’ and parents’ jb t help develp and celebrate thse gifts. When yung peple experience the excitement f being strng and capable — as an artist, an athlete, a leader, r a friend — they are better equipped t persevere thrugh bstacles in ther areas f their life. By identifying and prtecting their “islands”, we shw them a way t deepen their wn ptential.
T crrect behavir thrugh affirming and appreciating ur children’s strengths and talents may nt be many parents’ cmmn practice. But it’s really a cmpetence wrth develping in urselves.
24. Hw des the authr feel abut the wrried mther’s slutin?
A. Familiar but inadvisable.B. Shcked and cnfused.
C. Unexpected but satisfied.D. Understandable and pleased.
25. What is the current parenting landscape accrding t the authr?
A. Pursuing perfect humanity.B. Fcusing n children’s weaknesses.
C. Priritizing interests ver academics.D. Cmparing children’s reprt cards.
26. What des the term “islands f cmpetence” refer t?
A. Strategies that enhance studies.B. Tests that assess a child’s capabilities.
C. Areas where kids shw natural talent.D. Places where children frm learning habits.
27. What is the main purpse f the article?
A. T criticize irrespnsible parents.B. T stress the pwer f perseverance.
C. T intrduce a new educatinal mde.D. T argue fr strength-based mtivatin.

Yellwstne’s wlves are helping a new generatin f yung aspen (山杨) trees t grw tall and jin the frest — the first new generatin f such trees in Yellwstne’s nrthern range in 80 years.
Gray wlves had disappeared frm Yellwstne Natinal Park by 1930 fllwing extensive habitat lss, human hunting and gvernment wlf-killing prgrams. Withut these wlves, ppulatins f deer grew quickly. At their peak ppulatin, an estimated 18,000 deer ranged acrss the park, living n grasses as well as the leaves f trees like aspen. This prevented yung trees frm establishing themselves, and surveys in the 1990s fund n yung aspen trees. But when wlves were reintrduced in 1995, the picture began t change. As wlf numbers rse, the deer ppulatin in the park drpped sharply, and it is nw dwn t abut 2,000.
In the new study, published in the jurnal Frest Eclgy and Management, Luke Painter and his clleagues frm Oregn State University surveyed aspen stands. “We’re seeing significant new grwth f yung aspen and this is the first time that we’ve fund it in ur plts since the 1940s,” Painter said.
Hwever, while Yellwstne’s aspen are recvering, they aren’t ut f the wds just yet. The deer ppulatin has declined, but bisn (野牛) numbers have increased in recent years. Bisn are a lt harder fr wlves t take dwn, said Painter, s increasing numbers f bisn may be emerging as a new restrictin n aspen in sme areas.
The re-emergence f aspen has widespread effects, Painter said. “Aspen are a key species fr bidiversity. The aspen trees let mre sunlight thrugh their leaves, which creates a habitat that supprts a lt f diversity f plants.”
“The paper shws the imprtant eclgical benefits ccurring frm the restratin f wlves t Yellwstne Natinal Park,” Dminick Spracklen, a prfessr at the University f Leeds, said. “Ecsystems that lack large carnivres (食肉动物) are ften increasingly ut f balance. While reintrducing carnivres raises imprtant challenges arund human-wildlife cexistence, this wrk brings the significant eclgical benefits in the lng run.”
28. What can be inferred abut Yellwstne Park befre 1930 accrding t the text?
A. Deer ppulatin reached its peak.
B. Human activities slightly affected wlves.
C. Bisn were the main species in the park.
D. Gray wlves existed with deer there.
29. What des the underlined sentence in paragraph 4 mean?
A. The aspen trees are t yung t make a frest.
B. The aspen trees cannt get rid f survival threat.
C. Other tree species may hld back aspen’s recvery.
D. Yellwstne is nt the best habitat fr aspen trees.
30. What is Prfessr Spracklen’s attitude tward carnivre restratin in ecsystems?
A. Favrable.B. Skeptical.C. Disapprving.D. Wrried.
31. Which f the fllwing can be a suitable title fr the text?
A. The Histry f Gray wlves in Yellwstne
B. The Return f Gray wlves Revives Aspen Trees
C. The Challenges f Human-Wildlife Cexistence Grw
D. The Restratin f Large Carnivres in Natinal Parks

Fighting fires usually uses water r fam, but these can make a mess and harm the surrundings. T address this, engineers at Ohi State University have nw made handheld tls that put ut fires cleanly with “inic (离子的) wind” and vrtex (涡流) rings.
If yu’ve ever blwn ut a birthday candle, yu’ll knw that a quick burst f air can be enugh t put ut a flame. It wrks by separating the heat frm the fuel s it can’t start again. But blwing n a campfire desn’t help — it’s t big, and yu just add xygen.
The new device is like a bigger versin f the birthday candle trick. First, it shts a vrtex ring f air that creates wild airflw t split heat and fuel. At the same time, the vrtex carries tiny cnductive particles (导电颗粒) that inize the air and make even mre vrtex. In practice, firefighters wuld aim this handheld tl at a fire and sht these “inic wind” rings t put it ut. That wuld als reduce the expense and cleanup.
“Using inic wind and vrtex ring technlgy, we fund a mre efficient way t slve an envirnmental prblem that will imprve lives,” lead researcher Jhn Larcc said. One f the biggest advantages f this device is that it allws firefighters t put ut flames frm a safer distance, reducing the risk f injury. Since vrtex rings can carry chemicals ver lng distances, firefighters wuldn’t need t get dangerusly clse t fires.
Much mre wrk still needs t be dne, hwever. Fr ne thing, the devices were tested n grups f candles, which aren’t like real huse r frest fires. Testing them against mre realistic fires is a pririty fr future experiments. Still, the team thinks this technlgy culd really wrk in the real wrld. The researchers als believe this device culd be imprved with smart sensrs and image analysis, making it mre precise in detecting different types f fires. Beynd firefighting, this technlgy culd have future applicatins in aerspace and industrial safety.
32. Why did engineers at Ohi State University invent the new handheld tls?
A. T take full advantage f water and fam.
B. T enhance firefighters’ prfessinal skills.
C. T abandn traditinal firefighting methds.
D. T reduce the rescue damage t the envirnment.
33. What des the authr try t illustrate by mentining the birthday candle in paragraph 2?
A. The principle f putting ut a flame by air.
B. The efficient way t blw ut a birthday candle.
C. The difference between a small flame and a campfire.
D. The reasn why blwing n a campfire desn’t wrk.
34. Why can the new device lwer the risk f injuries?
A. It creates strnger wind than ther tls.
B. It absrbs harmful substances in the smke.
C. It enables users t stay farther frm the fire.
D. It allws firemen t avid using chemicals.
35. What is the researchers’ expectatin fr the new device?
A. It will prevent all types f fire.B. It will refrm the aerspace industry.
C. It will be mre intelligent and accurate.D. It will be widely used by rdinary peple.

Last mnth, when I was walking hme after schl, I nticed smething shining n the rad — a brken smartphne. Its screen was cvered in cracks, and the utside was clearly hit by a car. I was curius and picked it up. The back cver came ff easily, revealing a small SIM card (手机卡) inside. Strm cluds gathered as I studied the smartphne. I thught f smething: my ld extra phne still wrked. Maybe I culd use the SIM card t find the wner. Feeling a little guilty but eager t help, I put the tiny card in my pcket, planning t check it later at hme.
After I gt hme, I put the unknwn SIM card int my extra phne. When I turned it n, it rang ludly at nce — smene was calling! Nervusly, I answered. A small, shaking vice cried, “Mm? Is that yu?
