      Fr tw immigrant (移民) families, a late-night phne call in the 1970s changed their lives frever.
      In 1974, Surinder Gupta mved t New Orleans t study medicine. He came with his wife, Shashi, and their baby sn, Shaminder. Life in a new cuntry was nt easy. Unlike in India, where they knew many peple, they knew n ne in New Orleans.
      One cld winter night, their baby had a high fever. At 3 a.m., the wrried parents rushed t a 24-hur drugstre. But when they came ut, their car was gne! It had been taken away by the plice. With little mney and n friends in the city, they felt helpless. Gupta pened a phne bk and called a randm (随意的) number — and it changed their lives.
      The man wh answered was Sukhdey Walia. By great luck, Walia was frm the same part f India as Gupta. Even thugh it was the middle f the night, Walia came right away. He picked them up and tk them hme. The next day, he even helped Gupta get his car back.
      That ne kind act started a deep friendship. Bth men were far frm hmetwn and knew hw hard it was t start ver in a new land. They began meeting ften, watching Indian mvies tgether and sharing meals. Their families grew clse, playing cards and lking after each ther’s children. In time, they became like ne big family.
      Years later, anther surprise brught them even clser. Walia’s nephew and Gupta’s daughter, wh had grwn up knwing each ther, fell in lve and gt married. Nw, they have tw children f their wn.
      Tday, 50 years later, the tw families are truly ne. “It all started with that randm phne call,” said Gupta. “Nw we are family.”

      A new study has lked at hw ur sleep, especially dreams, is related t ur eating habits. One f the findings? The wrse lactse intlerance symptms (乳糖不耐症) peple had, the wrse their nightmares (噩梦) were. The study fllws earlier research frm 2015, which lked at hw certain fds might affect ur dreams. Prfessr Tre Nielsen, wh wrked n bth studies, said the 2015 study ften blamed (指责) cheese fr bad dreams. But the new research gives clearer answers.
      The study surveyed ver 1,000 peple, many f whm were cllege students. Thse reprting strnger stmach discmfrt caused by lactse intlerance als reprted wrse nightmares. Their nightmares were described as mre frequent, mre upsetting, lnger lasting, and mre likely t affect daily life. Many participants (参与者) cnnected their nightmares t milk prducts and sweets.
      Because the peple studied were mstly students, the findings may nt represent the general ppulatin. Still, experts say there are clear reasns why cheese might disturb sleep. One idea is that stmach prblems caused by lactse culd increase anxiety, which can lead t mre nightmares. Anther idea is that eating cheese may cause sleep t be brken up by shrt wake-ups, knwn as “micr-arusals.” These shrt wake-ups can affect sleep quality and make nightmares wrse.
      Marie-Pierre St-Onge, a prfessr at Clumbia University, said that stmach discmfrt may explain many f the sleep prblems. She added that ther unknwn things might als affect dreams.
      Nielsen said mre studies are needed, especially in different grups f peple. But fr nw, peple can watch hw certain fds affect their sleep and make changes if needed. “Yu dn’t always need a dctr t try small diet changes,” he said.

      Marine heatwaves (MHWs) happen when cean temperatures stay much higher than nrmal fr a lng time. They can lead t cral dying, lss f sea life, and harm t fishing. Scientists say climate change, caused by human activities, is making these heatwaves mre frequent and strnger.
      In 2023, strng heatwaves hit the Nrth Atlantic, the Nrth and Suth Pacific, and the trpical Pacific. A new study led by scientist Tianyun Dng used satellite data and cmputer mdels t find ut why these heatwaves were s extreme.
      The research shwed that the 2023 MHWs brke all previus recrds in terms f strength, length, and size. They lasted fur times lnger than usual and affected mst f the wrld’s cean areas. Abut 90% f the unusual heating happened in the Nrth Atlantic, Trpical Eastern Pacific, Nrth Pacific, and Suthwest Pacific.
      One majr event was in the Nrth Atlantic, starting in mid-2022 and lasting 525 days. In the Suthwest Pacific, the heatwave was the largest and lngest ever recrded. In the Trpical Eastern Pacific, cean temperatures rse by up t 1.63℃ when E1 Nin began.
      Using a special methd called heat budget analysis, scientists fund several causes. These included mre sunlight due t fewer cluds, weaker winds, and changes in cean currents (洋流). Experts warn that these changes may be an early sign f a climate precipice, where the Earth’s systems may begin t change in dangerus and lasting ways.
