      The San Dieg Z is celebrating an uncmmn event: 41 Indian narrw-headed sftshell turtles (软壳龟) were brn here. This is the first time this Suth Asian species has been successfully raised in Nrth America.
      These turtles typically live at the bttm f deep rivers and streams in cuntries like nrthern India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Nepal. Adult turtles can grw up t 3.6 feet lng and weigh as much as 440 punds. During the rainy seasn in central India and dry mnths in ther areas, female turtles lay up t 190 eggs in a place n the beach and cver them with dirt. When the baby turtles break ut f their eggs, they are very small — just 1.5 inches lng.
      The San Dieg Z gt its first tw turtles f this kind in 1997.       Astrnauts travelling arund Earth might sn be able t make their wn delicius, creamy breakfast. This is thanks t Australian high schl students. They want t see if the astrnauts can make ygurt (酸奶) in space!
      A team f six students at Haileybury, an independent high schl in Melburne, are wrking n a prgram with Swinburne researchers t study the effects f micrgravity, which refers t a cnditin where the frce f gravity is extremely weak r nearly absent, n bacteria (细菌). They hpe t perfect the cnditins under which astrnauts culd make their wn ygurt. They placed the bacteria prducing ygurt in a culture and packed 36 cntainers with frzen milk and the bacteria. Then, they sent the cntainers t the Internatinal Space Statin (ISS), where the astrnauts warmed up the milk and bacteria t study them with these students.
      But hw exactly d bacteria make ygurt? It all starts with the bacteria that live in milk. These bacteria eat sme f the sugar in milk and create a kind f chemical—acid, which makes the milk thick and creamy. This is called fermentatin (发酵).
      The astrnauts will study these cntainers t see hw ygurts change depending n the type f milk — either full cream cw’s milk r sy milk. They will als test different fermentatin time — either 24, 48 r 72 hurs.
      When the ygurts cme back t Earth, the students will check them. One Haileybury student, Chiara Sgri said ne gal f the experiment is t figure ut which ygurt is the healthiest. “We can even get t taste them, which is pretty exciting,” said Sgri. She nted the temperature inside the ISS, arund 23℃, is significantly cler than the 37℃ r warmer that ygurt is usually cultured at.
