When Ben Cheng, 63, finished a bicycle jurney alng the ancient Silk Rad in June, she immediately began planning her next trip. Ben was a teacher wh cmes frm Changchun, Jilin Prvince. She has cycled mre than 100,000 kilmeters ver the last eight years.

When we talk abut Chinese handmade paper, yu prbably think f Xuan paper. Hwever, there are different kinds in different places, and Lianshi paper frm Fujian is ne f them.
Ging back 400 years, Lianshi paper is made by hand using bamb. Accrding t Fujian Daily, Lianshi paper weighs nly 19 grams (克) every square meter, but it is strng. Thanks t this, Lianshi paper was listed as a prvincial intangible cultural heritage (省级非物质文化遗产) in Fujian in 2008.
Deng Jinkun,54, has been learning t make Lianshi paper fr 30 years. He said making Lianshi paper has 72 steps, including cutting bamb, saking (浸湿), making pulp (纸浆), and drying. What makes it stand ut is its bleaching (漂白) technlgy. “In May each year, bamb is cut ff, and saked in lime (石灰) twice. The bamb is then heated at a high temperature. After that, it’s bleached n the muntain fr fur mnths,” Deng said. The natural bleaching prcess makes it white, he added.
Besides carrying n traditinal art, Deng als brught in new ideas at the same time. Traditinally the pulp is cllected using a wden shelf held by tw peple. “Our Lianshi paper needs nly ne persn as we use strings t hang ne side,” Deng said.
When they heat the paper, the baking wall is als special. Accrding t Deng, ther places use lime t make the wall. “After a trip t the University f Science and Technlgy f China in 2018, I decided t use a special kind f clay t make the wall s that it lasts lnger,” he said.
