Alzheimer’s is a serius brain disease affecting 55 millin peple wrldwide. BEI sends vlunteers t help elderly peple with Alzheimer’s d brain exercise packets. These packets have three parts: writing (with easy questins like “wh’s n the dllar bill”), math (simple tasks), and reading (a shrt passage fr discussin). Ghsh said vlunteers dn’t just help with exercises but als build relatinships with the elderly.
The research behind BEI als had t be validated by Dr. O’Banin, a prfessr at URMC, befre the chapter culd be given gvernment permissin. The research shwed that these exercises can help peple with Alzheimer’s. After cnsistently cmpleting the exercises, “their cgnitive ability really imprved,” Ghsh said. These exercises are used at mre than 1,400 care hmes.
Junir Ali Al Qazzaz, a micrbilgy majr, jined BEI after reading its research. He’s a pre-medical student, interested in Alzheimer’s, and wants t study it while wrking with patients.
The chapter began recruiting vlunteers in the spring f 2025. Befre vlunteering, members practiced with rle-plays t handle prblems. They als c-spnsred Family Science Day, playing memry games with kids.
On April 6, the executive bard (E-Bard) went t St. Ann’s Cmmunity fr a trial. The BEI chapter is in cnversatin with Brkdale Senir Living and hpes t send vlunteers there t. Finding a Mjave Desert trtise is getting harder in the American Suthwest. These trtises, with their dmed patterned shells, live in Califrnia, parts f Nevada, Arizna and nrthwestern Mexic. Hwever, they have lst habitat t develpment ver decades. Disease and climate change als put them at risk, threatening their existence.
Estimates shw that in fur ut f five main regins where the trtises live, abut 90% have disappeared since 1984. The Califrnia Department f Fish and Wildlife called them “threatened” in 1989, and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) did the same a year later. This year, Califrnia tk a further step, declaring them “endangered” under the state’s Endangered Species Act — meaning they may g extinct withut prper management.
Krysten Kellum, a state agency spkespersn, said this status change culd help get mre funds fr their prtectin. Yet, Kristina Drake, a frmer USFWS fficial, said federal supprt faces challenges — the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service lst many wrkers, and its budget may be cut, and mre federal mney isn’t expected fr the trtises, which have lived in the desert fr at least 15 millin years.
Luckily, nnprfits like the Mjave Desert Land Trust still wrk t prtect the trtises and their habitat. Finding trtises is hard because they spend mst f their time undergrund in burrws (洞穴) t escape heat and predatrs like muntain lins. Scientists say the trtises’ decline is “death frm a thusand cuts” — caused by vehicle cllisins, habitat lss, climate change, and mre. Climate change makes temperatures higher and drughts lnger. A study during Califrnia’s 2012-2016 drught fund fewer female trtises, as laying eggs uses much water and prtein, which is wrse in drughts.
Trtises are imprtant “ecsystem engineers”. They dig 7 t 17 burrws yearly, and abandned nes becme hmes fr ther animals. Lsing them wuld harm the whle ecsystem. Thugh seeing tw trtises in a day is rare and special nw, nnprfits will keep fighting t prtect them.
8. Why are the Mjave Desert trtises harder t spt?
A. Because they have migrated t cmpletely new regins.
B. Because their ppulatin has declined significantly.
C. Because their patterned shells prvide perfect shelters.
D. Because they are hiding frm human beings.
9. What d Kristina Drake’s wrds shw abut federal supprt?
A. It increases because f public demand.B. It will raise mre federal mney.
C. It fcused n ther species instead.D. It is limited due t staff and budget issues.
10. What can be the cause f the Mjave Desert trtise’s decline?
A. It is the result f a cmplex cmbinatin f factrs.
B. It is primarily due t a single and identifiable threat.
C. It is mainly caused by a lack f public awareness.
D. It is directly linked t a specific disease utbreak.
11. What is the main idea f the passage?
A. The living habits f Mjave Desert trtises.
B. The reasns fr declaring trtises endangered.
C. The effrts t prtect Mjave Desert trtises.
D. The impact f climate change n trtises.

Saturn, the ringed planet, nw basts 274 mns after 128 new nes were fficially recgnized, nearly dubling its previus ttal f 146.
The Internatinal Astrnmical Unin (IAU), the glbal authrity n such classificatins, cnfirmed the discvery n March 11, thugh the mns were first detected in 2023 by a team f astrnmers frm China, Canada, the U.S., and France using the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescpe (CFHT) atp Mauna Kea in Hawaii.
Mst f these newly cnfirmed mns are irregular and tiny, just a few miles acrss. By cntrast, ur mn has a diameter f 2,159 miles (3,475 kilmeters). But they d have prven rbits arund Saturn, which is a key element f fficial mn qualificatin. Dr. Brett Gladman, prfessr at the University f British Clumbia, explained in a statement: “These mns are a few kilmeters in size and are likely all fragments f a smaller number f riginally captured mns that were brken apart by vilent cllisins, either with ther Saturnian mns r with passing cmets.”
This discvery marks anther milestne fr the team, which previusly added 62 mns t Saturn’s cunt between 2019 and 2021 using the same CFHT. Lead researcher Dr. Edward Ashtn, a pstdctral fellw at Academia Sinica’s Institute, nted their strategy: “With the knwledge that mre mns were likely t exist, we revisited the same sky fields fr three cnsecutive (连续的) mnths in 2023 — and fund 128 new nes.”
The bservatin f Saturn's mns has a rich histry: Titan, its first knwn mn, was discvered in 1655 by Christiaan Huygens, fllwed by fur mre discvered by Jean-Dminique Cassini in the fllwing decades. William Herschel sptted Mimas and Enceladus in 1789. Over the subsequent 200 years, technlgical imprvements — including the inventin f phtgraphy, the develpment f massive telescpes, and the launch f space prbes like the Vyager 1, Vyager 2 and Cassini — allwed us t see even mre f Saturn's mns.
Yet, Ashtn cautins that current technlgy may have reached its limit: “We can’t d much better than what’s been dne fr mns arund Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune with existing technlgy.” Fr nw, Saturn reigns with 274 knwn mns, far utpacing Jupiter’s 95.
12. What is the cre criterin fr becming a Saturnian mn?
A. A diameter larger than a few miles.B. A cnfirmed rbit arund Saturn.
C. Discvery by the internatinal team.D. Origin frm cllisins with cmets.
13. What des Dr. Brett Gladman suggest abut the new mns?
A. They rbit Saturn in a regular pattern.
B. They were first detected by the CFHT in 2019.
C. They are larger than mst previusly knwn Saturnian mns.
D. They were frmed frm brken fragments f lder mns.
14. Accrding t Ashtn, hw is the future f mn discvery?
A. The number f knwn mns will duble t 274.
B. Mre mns will be fund with the current telescpes.
C. New discveries will depend entirely n space prbes.
D. Technlgical advancements may lead t new discveries.
15. What is the main purpse f the passage?
A. T cmpare the number f mns between Saturn and Jupiter.
B. T explain the prcess f Saturn’s mns’ frmatin.
C. T reprt the discvery f 128 new mns arund Saturn.
D. T argue fr the need f mre advanced technlgy.
