In the 1950s, Herbert Simn, ne f the funders f AI, declared that, nce a cmputer culd beat the best chess player in the wrld, machines wuld have reached the pinnacle f human intelligence. Hwever, just a few decades later, in 1997, the chess-playing cmputer Deep Blue beat wrld champin Garry Kasparv.
While researchers were delighted at it, many peple began t shw cncerns. But, accrding t Gert Gigerenzer, a psychlgist and authr f Hw t Stay Smart in a Smart Wrld, there was n need t wrry abut it. As he explains in the bk, in an age where self-driving cars have been let lse n the rads and websites seem t knw ur preferences better than we d, peple tend t: “assume the near-perfect smartness f artificial intelligence”. But, he argues, AIs aren’t as clever as yu might think.
And fr example, at the 2017 UEFA Champins League final in Cardiff, UK, a face-recgnitin system matched the faces f 2,470 ftball fans at the stadium and the city’s railway statin t thse f knwn criminals, but 92% f the matches turned ut t be false alarms, despite the system being designed t be bth mre efficient and mre reliable than humans.
“There are gd reasns why even the smartest systems fail,” says Gigerenzer. “Unlike chess, which has rules that are rigid and unchanging, the wrld f humans is cmplex and incnsistent. In the face f real-wrld uncertainty, algrithms (算法) fall apart.”
In this bk, Gigerenzer, using cutting-edge research and persuasive real-wrld tales, skillfully explains the limits f technlgy and AI. Here, we can get t the cre f Gigerenzer’s main argument: Technlgy, at least as we knw it tday, culd never replace humans because there is n algrithm fr human cmmn sense. Knwing, but nt truly understanding, leaves Al in the dark abut what is really imprtant.

The emissins (排放) frm human influences affecting climate include heat-trapping gases such as carbn dixide, methane (甲烷), and nitrus xide, and particles such as black carbn, which has a warming influence. Lcal climate can als be affected by ther human factrs and natural variability.
Carbn dixide has been building up in the atmsphere since the beginning f the industrial era in the mid-1700s, primarily due t burning cal, il, and gas, and secndarily due t clearing f frests. Atmspheric levels have increased by abut 40% relative t pre-industrial levels.
Methane levels in the atmsphere have increased due t human activities including agriculture, mining cal, extractin (抽取) and transprt f natural gas, and ther fssil fuel-related activities. Since pre-industrial times, methane levels have increased by 250%.
The cnclusin that human influences are the primary driver f recent climate change is based n multiple lines f independent evidence. The first line f evidence is ur fundamental understanding f hw certain gases trap heat, hw the climate system respnds t increases in these gases, and hw ther human and natural factrs influence climate.
The secnd line f evidence is frm recnstructins f past climates using evidence such as tree rings, ice cres, and crals. These shw that glbal surface temperatures ver the last several decades are clearly unusual, with the last decade warmer than any time in at least the last 1,300 years and perhaps much lnger.
The third line f evidence cmes frm using climate mdels t simulate (模拟) the climate f the past century, separating the human and natural factrs that influence climate. When the human factrs are remved, these mdels shw that slar and vlcanic activities wuld have tended t slightly cl the earth, and ther natural variatins are t small t explain the amunt f warming. Only when the human influences are included d the mdels reprduce the warming bserved ver the past 50 years.
12. What d carbn dixide and methane have in cmmn accrding t this text?
A. They smell bad.B. They can trap heat.
C. They belng t fuels.D. They are frm the same surce.
13. Hw des the authr illustrate the evidence f human influences n climate change?
A. By listing.B. By shwing data.C. By cmparing.D. By giving examples.
14. What can be inferred abut climate change frm the last paragraph?
A. Natural factrs have a greater impact n climate change.
B. Slar and vlcanic activities tend t make the earth warm.
C. Human influences have played an imprtant part in it.
D. The climate mdels can wrk well with human factrs remved.
15. What des this text mainly talk abut?
A. The restratin f a cl climate.B. Human impact n climate and its evidence.
C. The climate in the pre-industrial times.D. Measures t cntrl carbn emissins.
