The American pet Henry Wadswrth Lngfellw nce wrte: “Music is the universal language f mankind.” Music is everywhere. But why d we like it s much? One idea is that we quickly learn the patterns f music, and ur brains feel rewarded when they can “guess” what will cme next. But it may g deeper than that.
Neural resnance (神经共振) thery, r NRT, prpses that, just as ur bdy’s internal clck crrespnds with the light and dark cycles f the Earth, ur brains actually crrespnd with the pitch and rhythm f music. This may be why we enjy music s much and why we can dance, keep time with a sng, and even cmpse music. Edward W. Large says this isn’t just an abstract idea. “It’s literally the sund causing a physical resnance in the brain,” he tld UCnn Tday.
Alng with ther researchers frm the US, the Netherlands, the UK and Canada, Large recently explained the principles f NRT. The researchers nte, fr example, that there’s evidence f ur brains cntinuing t react t musical harmnies even after the sunds have stpped. And scans have shwn activity in the brain that crrelates with keeping time with music, even if the music desn’t actually have a regular beat the listener can hear.
Accrding t NRT, this resnance is what makes us want t mve and dance and music cnnects nt just t ur ears and ur brains, but even t ur limbs and ur spinal crds (脊髓). “This thery suggests that music is pwerful nt just because we hear it, but because ur brains and bdies becme it,” said Carline Palmer, ne f the researchers. “That has big implicatins fr medical applicatin, educatin and technlgy,” Palmer said.
The researchers say that NRT can give us insight int hw the brain and bdy are cnnected, hw music cmmunicates emtin and hw ur understanding f the effects f music culd be applied t brain health in the future.
8. What might explain why humans enjy music accrding t paragraph 1?
A. Brain’s reward frm music.B. Its emtinal expressin.
C. Lngfellw’s famus qute.D. Its universal ppularity.
9. What d we knw abut NRT?
A. It is abut the day-night cycle.B. It tells us hw t listen t music.
C. It shws brain-music link.D. It guides music cmpsitin.
10. What des the underlined phrase “crrelates with” in paragraph 3 mean?

“These experiments represent an imprtant first step, but they d nt shw that the mss culd be a significant surce f xygen under Martian cnditins, nr d they shw that the desert mss culd reprduce in the Martian cntext,” McDaniel said. “Implying that mss is ready t terrafrm (行星地球化) Mars, r any ther uter planet, is an verstatement.” Zupanska added.
Dr. Wiger f Wageningen University, als raised cncerns, including that temperatures n the red planet rarely gt abve freezing, making utdr plant grwth impssible, while the new study did nt use Mars-like sil. “The msses were treated under Mars circumstances fr a maximum f several days and then regrwn under Earth cnditins n sand,” he said. “This desn’t shw at all they can grw under Mars cnditins.”
Hwever, Prf. Edward Guinan f Villanva University described the study as impressive. “This extremtlerant mss culd prmise t be a pineer plant fr Mars clnizatin,” he said, althugh he nted the mss wuld need water t grw. “We have a lt f things t d,” he said. “But this lwly desert mss ffers hpe fr making small prtins f Mars habitable fr humankind in the future.”
