The greening f planes, trains and autmbiles
Mving gds and peple arund the wrld is respnsible fr a large part f glbal CO2 emissins (排放). As the wrld races t decarbnize everything, it faces particular prblems with transprtatin — which accunts fr abut a quarter f ur energy-related greenhuse gas emissins. Here’s the breakdwn f the emissins in 2018 fr different mdes f transprt.
The fuels fr transprt need t be nt just green, cheap and pwerful, but als lightweight and safe enugh t be carried arund. Each mde f transprt has its specific fuel needs. Much is still t be settled, but here are sme f the slutins t get us ging green.
This energy transitin (变革) is glbal, and the amunt f renewable energy the wrld will need is “a little bit mind-blwing,” says mechanical engineer Keith Wipke at the Natinal Renewable Energy Labratry. It’s estimated that the glbal demand fr electricity culd mre than duble by 2050. Frtunately, analyses suggest that renewables are up t the task. “We need t speed up the develpment f green energy, and it will all get used,” says Wipke.
1. What percentage f glbal transprt emissins did rad vehicles accunt fr in 2018?
A. 11.6%.B. 45.1%.C. 74.5%.D. 86.1%.
2. Which mde f transprt can g green cmparatively easily?
A. Planes.B. Trucks.C. Trains.D. Ships.
3. What des Wipke suggest regarding energy transitin?

Helms Ategeka wants t be a pp star. But when he tld his dad he planned t g after a music degree after his graduatin next mnth frm high schl, his father wasn’t exactly excited.
S last fall, the Oakland, Califrnia, teenager tk a different apprach. He started applying t clleges. Mre than 150 f them. Befre lng, he gt an acceptance letter. Then anther. And anther. The trickle (细流) became a fld until there were 122 f them — alng with sme $5. 3 millin in schlarship ffers.
His father says he’s prud f Helms’ 3.94 GPA and had hped his sn wuld pick a career with financial stability, like medicine r cmputer technlgy. But as he watched the muntain f acceptance letters in his sn’s rm get bigger with every mail delivery, Chris Ategeka’s hpe disappeared.
“He’s s cnfident that music is what he wants t d. It wuld be wrng fr me t try t guide him therwise ... That’s why he applied t many clleges t prve a pint,” Chris says. “I tld him, ‘Yu want t be a musician? It takes a lt f hard wrk.’ And his reactin was, ‘I’ll use my determinatin t d this t shw yu hw hard I can wrk.’”
But hw des an 18-year-ld begin narrwing dwn such a massive list f ptins? “I live fr music. I spend mst f my time either listening t music, making music r ut there perfrming,” Helms says. “I feel the mst alive and fulfilled when I’m ding smething related t music.”
S when he started his cllege applicatin jurney, he had ne key requirement: the schl needed t have a strng music prgram.
Helms spent the past few mnths studying the websites and scial media accunts f schls that accepted him. He’s watched vides f their music prgrams n YuTube and TikTk t get a sense f where he fits in. After mnths f research, Helms made his chice: he will stay nearby and study music at UC Berkeley. A spkespersn fr Berkeley cnfirmed that he’s been accepted.

When my sn was a little kid, he liked t run in ur driveway until he fell. He wuld then turn t me t see if he was hurt. If my face shwed wrry, he wuld cry. If I maintained peace, he wuld brush himself ff and get back t running. Learning that I culd s pwerfully influence his mental state was a revelatin.
One night while ding hmewrk, my sn tld me abut a classmate wh had been unkind t him. My first instinct (本能) was t rush t fix it — email the parents, call the schl, and demand actin. But instead f reacting, I paused.
“That sunds hard. What did yu d?”
“Dad, I decided nt t hang ut with him fr a while,” my sn replied. “I’m ging t try playing sccer at lunch instead.”
“That’s a great slutin,” I said, and he went back t his hmewrk.
These therwise rdinary parenting mments made me realize a truth: Smetimes, the best thing a parent can d is nthing at all.
I’ve spent the past 30 years wrking in schls, and I’ve watched thusands f parents engage with educatrs and with their children. T ften, I watch parents ver-functining — depriving (剥夺) their kids f the cnfidence that cmes frm struggling, and tiring themselves in the prcess.
We’re bilgically wired t prevent ur children’s suffering, and it can be painful t watch them struggle. A parent’s first instinct is ften t remve barriers frm their child’s path. This urge has led t pp-culture mythlgy (神话) arund pushy parenting styles, including the “Helicpter Parent”, wh flies in t rescue a child in crisis, and the “Snwplw Parent”, wh flattens any barrier in their child’s way.
A yung persn wh grws accustmed t having a parent intervene n his behalf begins t believe that he’s nt capable f acting n his wn, feeding bth anxiety and dependence.
I want t make a case fr the Lighthuse Parent. A Lighthuse Parent stands as a steady, reliable guide, prviding safety and clarity withut cntrlling every aspect f their child’s jurney. Yes, parenting can be stressful. But when we trust ur children t explre the wrld — with us as steady and supprtive guides — we lighten ur wn lad and help them grw healthily.

A. T define a cncept.B. T supprt his argument.
C. T intrduce a new tpic.D. T prvide the backgrund.
11. What wuld be the best title fr the text?
A. Trusting Children Is f Imprtance
B. Putting Pressure n Kids Is Necessary
C. Lighthuse Parents Benefit Kids’ Grwth
D. Over-Functining Parents D Harm t Kids

Three atmspheric scientists at Clrad State University have fund evidence suggesting that western bundary currents have a bigger impact n lcal climate variability than have been previusly thught.
In their paper published in the jurnal Nature, James Larsn, David Thmpsn and James Hurrell describe hw they used satellite data and numerical mdeling t better understand the impact f western bundary currents n lcal climate variability and what they learned by ding s.
Bundary currents are, as their names suggest, cean currents that are impacted by castlines assciated with land masses. They fall under tw main categries, eastern and western. Eastern bundary currents are thse that have an eastern bundary, which means they run against the western cast f a land mass. Western bundary currents are the cnverse:
In this new study, the researchers nted that prir research fcusing n the impact f bundary currents has typically fcused n mean climate impacts — western bundary currents, fr example, are knwn t mve huge amunts f warm water frm the trpics (热带) t the mid-latitudes. Because f that, they have a majr impact n wind, rain, and strms, in general.
Fr this study, the researchers wanted t learn mre abut the rle western bundary currents play in lcal weather variability. They analyzed high-reslutin satellite images and used numerical mdels t find assciatins between factrs such as sea surface temperatures (SSTs) and vertical mtin in the atmsphere ver western bundary currents in bth hemispheres (半球). Mre specifically, they lked fr assciatins between SSTs and circulatin (环流) f air in the atmsphere n a mnth-by-mnth basis at a lcalized level.
The researchers fund what they describe as variability in SSTs and their influence n lcal atmspheric circulatin, which has an impact n rainfall amunts and the vertical rise and fall f air in the atmsphere. The team sums up their findings by suggesting their wrk has shwn that there is a mechanism that cnnects cean prcesses t lcal climate variability. They suggest this finding culd have an impact n weather frecasting mdels.
12. What was the main fcus f the study?
A. Predicting future changes in cean ecsystems.
B. Develping new methds fr cean current mapping.
C. Hw the researchers emply data frm satellites scientifically.
D. Hw western bundary currents influence lcal weather change.
13. What des the underlined wrd “cnverse” in paragraph 3 prbably mean?
A. Similar.B. Oppsite.C. Strange.D. Flexible.
14. What is the difference f the study cmpared t the prir ne?
A. It fcused n mre specific pints.B. It paid mre attentin t the lcals.
C. It lked at rainfall trend mre carefully.D. It tk mre time t achieve a high level.
15. What des the authr intend t tell us abut the study in the last paragraph?
A. Its principle.B. Its challenges.C. Its applicatin.D. Its prcess.

There were never-ending wars between me and my mther. We spent a lt f time in a state f debate. As much as I wanted t respect her wishes, I always had my wn plans in my head. Her wishes and my plans were rarely the same.
She wuld tell me t tie my shelaces; I wuld argue that the knts made it harder t get my shes ff. She wuld demand that I make my bed; I wuld insist that it was nt necessary. She wuld ask me t cut the grass in the backyard and I’d reply with a cmprehensive list f all the reasns that the grass lked better tall and uncut. Rund and rund we’d g in a funny dance. She’d thrw ut a rule, and I’d find a lphle (漏洞) and jump thrugh it. When all the lphles were clsed, I wuld switch strategies. Instead f arguing, I wuld try t find the clsest pen dr and run. But it seemed that my mm was always waiting at the exit.
I am cnvinced that weekends are nt fr wrk. They are fr leisure and adventure. That’s why there’s n schl n weekends. Nevertheless, my mm thinks the ther way. Last Saturday mrning, when I was dreaming beneath my warm blanket, my bedrm dr flew pen and came the vice f my mther, “Wake up, Walter. It is time t start the day.” Pretending nt t hear my mm, I tried t clse my eyes even tighter. My mm didn’t wait fr my respnse. She drew pen the curtain and tld me that we were ging t have a thrugh clean fr ur huse and that I was in charge f tidying my bedrm and the study. “I am scheduled t g skating with my friends.” I was smewhat annyed and made an excuse.

PLANES — Synthetic hydrcarbns
The hardest sectr t decarbnize is aviatin. One lng-term ptin fr sustainable fuel fr planes is t make hydrcarbns frm recycled air.
CARS — Batteries
Batteries are energy-efficient and electric cars can plug int existing systems and services. New slid-state batteries will take a car farther n a single charge.
TRAINS — Electricity
Sme trains are already electrified thrugh rails r wires; thers can be made electric in pretty simple ways.
TRUCKS — Hydrgen fuel cells
Hydrgen fuel cells are a lighter chice than batteries fr trucks, but making green hydrgen is expensive.
SHIPS — Liquid ammnia
Liquid ammnia is easy t keep and transprt, but it is hard t ignite (点燃) and requires an engine redesign.
