I was brn and raised in Minnesta, the USA, but as an adult I have mstly lived in Eurpe and Africa. I teach crss-cultural management at the Internatinal Business Schl near Paris. Fr the last 15 years, I’ve studied hw peple in different parts f the wrld build trust, cmmunicate, and make decisins especially in the wrkplace.
While traveling in Tky recently with a clleague, I gave a shrt talk t a grup f 20 managers. At the end, I asked whether there were any questins r cmments. N hands went up, s I went t sit dwn. My clleague whispered t me, “I think there actually were sme cmments, Erin. D yu mind if I try?” I agreed, but I guessed it a waste f breath. He asked the grup again. “Any cmments r questins?”
Still, n ne raised a hand, but this time he lked very carefully at each persn in the silent audience. Gesturing t ne f them, he said, “D yu have smething t add?” T my amazement, she respnded “Yes, thank yu.” and asked me a very interesting questin. My clleague repeated this several times, lking directly at the audience and asking fr mre questins r cmments.
After the sessin, I asked my clleague, “Hw d yu knw that thse peple had questins?” He hesitated, nt sure hw t explain it, and then said, “it has t d with hw bright their eyes are.”
He cntinued, “In Japan, we dn’t make as much direct eye cntact as yu d in the West. S when yu asked if there were any cmments, mst peple were nt lking directly at yu. But a few peple in the grup were lking right at yu, and their eyes were bright. That indicates that they wuld be happy t have yu call n them.”
I thught t myself I wuld never have learned frm my upbringing in Minnesta. Since then, I try t fcus n understanding behavir in ther cultures I encunter, and keep finding the bright eyes in the rm.

Imagine standing in frnt f a restaurant menu with cuntless ptins, each sunding appealing. Yu spend 20 minutes thinking, nly t feel anxius that the dish yu finally chse might nt be the best ne available. This is “FOBO” — the fear f a better ptin.
“FOBO is the anxiety that smething better will cme alng, which makes it difficult t cmmit t existing chices when making a decisin,” said venture capitalist Patrick McGinnis, wh came up with the term, “Especially if there are several ptins available, yu wrry that a better r even perfect chice might be ut there, yet yu struggle t chse just ne.” While it’s imprtant t weigh prs and cns and think thrugh majr decisins, FOBO keeps us caught in a lp (循环), frever chasing the unclear “what if”.
The cncept f FOBO is based n a mistaken belief that “the lnger we lk, the mre ptins we will have, and this will smehw lead t a better utcme.” Hwever, there’s n guarantee f this. Instead, peple may wait s lng that they end up lsing gd ptins and regret nt making a chice sner. Cnstantly secnd-guessing neself and living in uncertainty can cause stress and exhaustin. Psychlgist Patricia Dixn explains, “Mentally, FOBO can cntribute t anxiety and depressin, as the cnstant search fr better ptins prevents individuals frm fully enjying their present circumstances. This mindset leads t dissatisfactin, weakens self-trust, and ultimately hinders persnal grwth and cnnectin.”
T vercme FOBO, the key is t streamline decisin-making prcesses. Start by setting clear pririties and narrwing dwn yur ptins t make chices easier. Limit the time spent n decisins t avid verthinking, break dwn cmplex decisins int smaller, manageable parts, and gather nly essential infrmatin. Trust yur instincts (直觉) and embrace the idea f fcusing n finding a “gd enugh” ptin rather than bsessing ver perfectin. Remind yurself that even if a better ptin appears later, yu’ve already made prgress.
      28. Why d peple experience FOBO?
      A. They want t make decisins quickly.
      B. They have few chices t select frm.
      C. They fear missing ut n a better ptin.
      D. They tend t take accunt f thers’ views.
      29. What is a ptential impact f FOBO n individuals?
      A. It blcks their way t embracing different ideas.
      B. It weakens their ability t analyze cmplex issues.
      C. It prevents them frm achieving a perfect utcme.
      D. It makes them dissatisfied with their current situatin.
      30. What des the underlined wrd “streamline” in the last paragraph prbably mean?
      A. Extend. B. Abandn. C. Evaluate. D. Simplify.
      31. Which f the fllwing is the best title fr the text?
      A. FOBO: Decisin-making Anxiety
      B. Deciding Wisely: Aviding Regret
      C. FOBO: The Secret t Better Chices
      D. Refusing Overthinking: Trusting Yurself

An Anna’s Hummingbird (蜂鸟) was seen in the frest in Califrnia recently. As it mved its head, its feathers changed clrs in the sunlight. The Anna’s Hummingbird is a small hummingbird fund alng the west cast f Nrth America. The male Anna’s Hummingbird has clurful feathers n its head and thrat, which can appear red, pink, range, r green. This has led t the assumptin that the bird can actively(主动地)change the clur f its feathers, but it is actually nt the case.
The clur shifts we see are caused by the structure f the feathers, nt by changes t the actual cluring f the feathers. The tiny structures n the surface f the feathers interact with light waves t prduce certain clrs. Anna’s Hummingbird feathers have tiny structures called melansmes (黑色素体) that lk like stacked flat discs (圆片). These disc stacks are super thin, clse t the size f the light waves we can see. When sunlight hits these discs, the light waves bunce and interact with each ther. Sme clrs get brighter, while thers cancel ut, creating shining rainbw effects — similar t hw sap bubbles. This “light dance” is why hummingbird feathers lk s clurful!
Unlike Anna’s Hummingbirds, sme birds change the clur f their feathers in a different way. Fr example, the Western Tanager has yellw feathers n its head and bdy. During mlting (蜕毛), it can absrb the yellw clur t display an range-red clur underneath. Thus, while Anna’s Hummingbirds rely purely n the structures f feathers, ther birds actively cntrl the clur spread and feather mvement t prduce changeable feathers.
The special feather structures in Anna’s Hummingbirds allw us t witness the diversity and wnder f the wrld. Next time yu bserve an Anna’s Hummingbird in the sun, watch clsely as its thrat seems t flash in rainbw clrs. But remember — this magic is happening in the structures thrugh physics(物理学),nt bilgy.
      32. What can we learn abut Anna’s Hummingbirds accrding t the passage?
      A. Their migratin happens alng the cast f America.
      B. They mve their ways twards the psitin f the sun.
      C. Their wings are cvered with clurful feathers.
      D. They are unable t cntrl the clur changes.
      33. What causes the clur changes f Anna’s Hummingbirds?
      A. The high brightness f their feathers.B. The actual cluring f their feathers.
      C. The surface structure f their feathers.D. The seasnal changes f their feathers.
      34. What can be inferred frm paragraph 3 abut the Western Tanager?
      A. It absrbs varius light waves.
      B. It actively changes the clur f the feathers.
      C. It mainly generates the yellw clur feathers.
      D. It depends n its head t change clrs.
      35. What is the purpse f the last paragraph?
      A. T advcate fr the cnservatin f Anna’s Hummingbirds.
      B. T explain the bilgical prcess f feather clur changes.
      C. T highlight the diversity and wnder f physics in nature.
      D. T cmpare clur-changing ways amng different birds.

Whether things g right r wrng, feedback is always necessary. 36 Hwever, prviding effective feedback is nt easy, as it typically requires several cmpnents. Nw let’s examine each f them.
Start n a psitive nte. Cnstructive criticism shuld always start n a psitive nte. It feels unfair and rude if smene tells yu everything yu did wrng withut acknwledging yur achievements. S when giving feedback, dn’t just nte the mistakes the receivers have made. 37
Be specific. Effective feedback needs t be specific. Infrm the receivers precisely what aspects require imprvement s they can identify and address thse areas. Fr example, dn’t say, “Yur presentatin was unclear. ” Instead, say smething like, “The intrductin f yur presentatin was a bit cnfusing. 38 ” This way, the receiver knws exactly what t cncentrate n and can make mre targeted imprvements.
39 The whle pint f feedback is t help smene make changes fr the better. S yu shuld prvide ideas n hw t imprve. It’s crucial, hwever, t ensure that yur ideas are actinable. Fr instance, “Yu need t wrk n yur cmmunicatin skills” sunds t general. It wuld be much better if yu say, “Try practicing active listening and summarizing what thers say t ensure yu understand them fully. ”
Be timely. 40 It nly wrks if it happens very clse t an issue arising. Fr example, say yu’re with a cwrker and ntice smething in the sales pitch he is wrking n. Instead f waiting fr him t run int prblems, prvide the feedback right away. This gives the receiver the chance t make changes and avid prblems.
      A.Offer practical advice.
      B.Fcus n making changes.
C.It helps us learn frm ur mistakes and grw.
D.It lacks a clear tpic sentence at the beginning.
E.Feedback isn’t f much use if it cmes t late.
F.The feedback acknwledges the hard wrk the persn did.
G.Instead, begin by recgnizing their effrt and what they gt right.
