In the early 19th century, New England farmers, tired f wrestling with their pr land, jurneyed t the Midwest. In states like Illinis and Iwa, they fund rich, black sil. Unfrtunately, many sn felt like thirsty sailrs in the middle f the cean—water everywhere but nt a drp t drink. They were surrunded by fertile sil, but had t stp every few secnds t remve the sticky dirt ff their irn plws (犁) with large wden paddles. This dilemma caught the attentin f Jhn Deere, a blacksmith wh mved t Illinis in 1836.
Deere decided t lk int the prblem. Frm his previus wrk n plws, he knew that dirt was less likely t stick t highly plished metal. That thught was in the back f his mind when he visited a sawmill (锯木厂) in 1837 and nticed a brken saw made f steel. Deere brught it hme and began making a better plw. The plw he wanted wuld have t cut deep int the sil at a sharp angle s that dirt wuld fall ff, yet it culd nt put t much burden n the hrses pulling it. After several experiments, Deere cnstructed a new plw that featured wd handles. It prved a success. Unlike the ld irn plws, Deere’s nt nly had a blade frm which dirt fell away cleanly, but it als turned the sil mre efficiently and quickly.
Demand fr Deere’s plws increased sharply, but prductin was limited by the shrtage f plished steel. Initially, Deere culd nly prduce a few plws each year. Hwever, Deere’s persistence paid ff as he surced cheaper steel frm Pittsburgh. Amazingly, in 1857, his cmpany manufactured and sld 10, 000 plws!
Deere, a perfectinist, cntinually imprved his plws, intrducing multiple new versins in a single year. While this slwed dwn his prductin ability, it ensured Deere a slid reputatin amng his custmers. Deere plws became wrld famus in the 1870s when they utshne the cmpetitin in a demnstratin in France. That same decade, his cmpany built its first riding plw and designed the leaping deer as its trademark.

Sratbu Medaka, a children’s bk, tells the stry f tiny medaka fish riding n a bird t a distant pnd. It has delighted children, but nw it’s revealed t be true.
Researchers have lng struggled t explain hw fish turn up in lakes far frm ther bdies f water, a mystery even Charles Darwin nted in 1859, when he suggested that aquatic (水生的) hatchlings might stick t the feet f birds, thugh his bright idea remained a thery.
In 2019, Ya Akifumi, a bilgy student then, wndered if Darwin might have been right and further wndered if fish-hunting birds might transprt egg-bearing aquatic plants stuck t their feet. T test this, he set up tw pnds ne metre apart, ne cntaining 36plants and the ther withut, bth equipped with camera traps. After six mnths, sme plants had switched pnds, and ne camera captured a bird flying away with a plant n its ft. Next, Ya aimed t see if fish eggs culd weather the jurney being carried ut f water. He attached tiny medaka eggs t aquatic plants and remved them fr zer t 24hurs—at favrable hatching cnditins — befre returning them.
In a paper in Science f Nature, Mr. Ya reprts that the medaka eggs can successfully hatch after up t 18 hurs ut f the water. Eggs withut a plant leaf t attach t rarely survived a few hurs. The big drp in survival was at 16.3 hurs, when half the eggs became lifeless.
Whether any egg culd survive that lng, given that a bird’s average flight-speed is arund 39kph, is dubtful, says Mr Ya, since wind expsure during such a lng jurney wuld dry them ut.
Shrter jurneys, hwever, are certainly pssible. And since many ther medaka-like species are fund thrughut Asia, the chances are high that hitchhiking (搭便车) explains hw they have ended up in lakes with seemingly n cnnectin t ther water bdies. Yet again, it wuld seem, Darwin’s theries turn ut t be crrect.
8. Why des the authr mentin Darwin’s idea?
A. T intrduce an academic term.B. T prvide research backgrund.
C. T questin a well-knwn thery.D. T explre new research methds.
9. What evidence did Ya find t supprt his assumptin?
A. Birds flying between pnds.B. Fish eggs surviving n plants.
C. A plant grwing in bth pnds.D. A bird carrying a plant n its ft.
10. What may increase medaka eggs’ survival?
A. Birds’ flying rute.B. Wind expsure.
C. Supprting leaves.D. Lnger jurneys.
11. What is the main idea f the text?
A. Children’s bk inspires research.B. Origin f fish has been uncvered.
C. Fish’s hitch riding has been prven.D. Eggs and plants have a clse relatin.

We’d ideally like t see plicy interventins (干预) t help sleep patterns imprve in the general ppulatin.”
Sme experts, hwever, urged cautin in interpreting the findings. Jessica Chelekis, a sleep expert at Brunel University Lndn, said there were “imprtant limitatins” t the study as the research did nt accunt fr educatin attainment, r include the time f day the cgnitive tests were cnducted in the results. The main value f the study was challenging steretypes arund sleep, she added.
