In spring, the female (雌性的) trees grw lts f flwers. When these flwers finish grwing, they prduce cttn-like seeds that spread thrugh the air.
Luckily, scientists have fund many ways t cntrl catkins. Ding “gender change surgery (变性手术)” n willw and pplar trees is ne f them. Peple cut ff the branches f female trees and replace (替换) them with branches frm male (雄性的) trees. This cuts dwn the number f catkins. Hwever, this way is slw and expensive. A skilled wrker can d the “surgery” n less than ten trees a day. Frm 2008 t 2018, nly arund 1,000 trees were treated in Beijing, reprted Outlk Weekly (《瞭望》) in 2022.
Scientists in Wuxi, Jiangsu, use special injectins (注射剂) t reduce the number f catkins n trees. Xu Qinming, an expert in Wuxi, tld Science and Technlgy Daily that this methd is safe fr the trees. Hwever, the trees need t get injectins every year t keep the catkin numbers under cntrl.
