Swt satellite is scheduled t be launched Thursday mrning t cnduct a cmprehensive survey f Earth’s vital resurce. By using advanced micrwave radar technlgy, it will cllect height-surface measurements f ceans, lakes and rivers in high-definitin detail ver 90% f the glbe. It’s really the first time t bserve nearly all water n the planet’s surface.
The majr missin is t explre hw ceans absrb atmspheric heal and CO2 in a natural prcess that adjusts climate change. Oceans are estimated t have absrbed mre than 90% f the extra heat trapped in the Earth’s atmsphere by human-caused greenhuse gases. Swt will scan (查看) the seas and precisely measure fine differences in surface elevatins (高度) arund smaller currents and eddies (漩涡), where much f the ceans’ decrease f heat and carbn is believed t ccur. “Studying the mechanism will help climate scientists answer a key questin: What is the turning pint at which ceans start releasing, rather than absrbing, huge amunts f heat back int the atmsphere and speed up glbal warming, rather than limiting it,” said Nadya Shiffer, Swt’s prgram scientist.
By cmparisn, earlier studies f water bdies relied n data f rivers r ceans taken at specific pints, r frm satellites that can nly track measurements alng a ne-dimensinal line, requiring scientists t fill in data gaps thrugh extraplatin (外推法). Thanks t the radar instrument, Swt can scan thrugh clud cver and darkness ver wide ranges f the Earth. This enables scientists t accurately map their bservatins in tw dimensins regardless f weather r time f day and t cver large gegraphic areas far mre quickly than was previusly pssible.
“Rather than giving us a line f elevatins, it’s giving us a map f elevatins, and that’s just a ttal game changer,” said Tamlin Pavelsky, Swt freshwater science leader.
4. What d the underlined wrds “vital resurce” in the first paragraph refer t?
A. Technlgy.B. Climate.C. Oceans.D. Water.
5. What is the majr missin f Swt satellite?
A. T explre where ceans absrb heat and CO2.
B. T explain why greenhuse gas cmes int being.
C. T identify when glbal warming is wrsened.
D. T study hw ceans influence climate change.
6. What makes it pssible fr Swt t measure precisely?
A. The high-definitin cmputer.
B. Advanced radar technlgy.
C. The three-dimensinal image.
D. An accurate map f elevatins.
7. Which is the mst suitable title fr the text?
A. First Glbal Water Survey frm Space
B. Successful Launch f Swt Satellite
C. A Breakthrugh in Space Travel
D. A Slutin t Climate Change

Farmers ften grw s-called cver plants between main crps. They are used fr purpses such as fr animal feeds r remain n the field as nutrients. In this way, they supply the sil with nutrients befre the next planting. Hwever, cver plants als prtect against the sil being washed away, regulate sil temperature, prmte humus (腐殖质) frmatin and increase bidiversity abve and belw grund. Hwever, their ptential fr remving sil cntaminants (污染物) has yet t be recgnized.
Actually, using plants t deal with cntaminants in the sil is nthing new. Fr example, cntaminated sil n industrial sites is already being tackled in this way. But agriculture culd als benefit frm this methd, says Marie Muehe, head f the Plant Bigechemistry wrking grup at the UFZ and senir authr f the publicatin.
Then which plants are suitable fr phytremediatin (植物修复) in agriculture? And which pllutants culd be managed with which plants? The UFZ team investigated these questins and analysed the current research. Based n the results f the frmer studies, the research team develped cncepts fr phytremediatin fr the respective pllutant categries. Fr example, sunflwers culd be used as a cver plant t prevent nitrate (硝酸盐) in the sil frm being washed ut and plluting the grundwater. The plants absrb the nitrate frm the sil t grw. Hwever, it was difficult t identify cver plants that are particularly suitable fr phytremediatin targeting the cntaminant categries f plastic.
“A lt f research still needs t be dne here — wrking tgether with farmers. Other than that, there is n ther apprach t effective and practicable strategies fr phytremediatin, tailred t different lcatins, sils and pllutant prblems,” says Marie Muehe. “Frm ur perspective, using cver plants t manage sil pllutants culd be an efficient future cncept fr healthier sils and mre sustainable agriculture.”
A UFZ research team will be launching a field study tgether with farmers as part f the SmartManure prject in the summer f 2025. Their aim is t mre clsely investigate different cver plants and their remediatin perfrmance and t test the practicability f phytremediatin in agricultural practice.
8. What is the purpse f paragraph 1?
A. T pint ut the benefits f cver plants.
B. T bring abut the tpic t be discussed.
C. T intrduce the backgrund f the passage.
D. T expse a rare phenmenn in agriculture.
9. What is the base f the researchers’ cncept?
A. Their practical experiments.B. Their wrk in the field.
C. Findings f previus research.D. The newly-raised questins.
10. What is the nly slutin t the phytremediatin prblem?
A. Ding mre research alng with farmers.
B. Testing the practicability f phytremediatin.
C. Gathering mre ways frm previus recrdings.
D. Ppularizing advanced knwledge amng farmers.
11. What is mainly talked abut in the passage?
A. Cver plants functin well in the field.
B. Farmers are taught t use cver plants in the filed.
C. Pllutants in the sil can be reduced in varius ways.
D. Cver plants can be used t remve pllutants in the sil.

In the desert in Peru, ver 300 new ancient drawings were discvered by using Artificial Intelligence (AI) and drnes (无人机). The Nazca peple, wh lived in the area ver 2,000 years ag, made the drawings by remving the reddish tp layer (层) f rcks in the desert. The drawings are called “geglyphs (地画)”. The Nazca Lines, which are a famus grup f huge ancient drawings, include many different kinds f geglyphs, frm simple shapes t pictures f animals and plants, usually drawn with a single lng, winding line.
The first geglyph was discvered in 1927. Since then, scientists have fund arund 430 geglyphs in the area. Nw, using AI and drnes, scientists have fund 303 new geglyphs. The discvery f ne geglyph used t take three r fur years, but nw may be dne in tw r three mnths. Hwever, the AI prgram als made lts f mistakes — fr every 36 pssible geglyphs the prgram fund, the scientists discvered nly ne actual geglyph. Even s, the new methd f turning up geglyphs was much faster than the scientists culd have managed withut drnes and AI.
T find the new geglyphs, the scientists trained a special AI prgram t analyze satellite images fr ptential geglyphs. They spent ver 2,600 hurs lking at places the AI had advised. They tk lts f pictures with drnes and wrked n the grund in Peru t check ut the lcatins. Mst f the new-fund geglyphs are smaller than the nes already discvered, and are abut nine meters in length. Many f them seem t shw humans as well as animals.
The scientists are still trying t figure ut what the geglyphs mean. Fr ne thing, the scientists discvered paths in the Nazca Desert. The scientists believe these paths were made by the Nazca peple walking thrugh the desert, and that the smaller geglyphs were meant t be seen by these travellers. The scientists als believe the larger geglyphs are different and may have been used fr celebratins r ther special events.
12. Hw were the Nazca geglyphs created?
A. By adding red rcks.B. By carving in the sil.
C. By cpying winding lines.D. By clearing rck surface layers.
13. Why des the authr list the figures in paragraph 2?

C. T argue fr mre funding.D. T prve AI’s accuracy.
14. What can be inferred abut the prcess f discvering new geglyphs?
A. Drnes were used fr initial checks.B. Fieldwrk cnfirmed AI suggestins.
C. AI identified all geglyphs precisely.D. Satellites ignred sme new geglyphs.
15. What d the scientists think the larger geglyphs were likely t be used fr?
A. Wildlife adratin.
B. Desert decratin.
C. Special ccasins.
D. Rad signs.
