As a child, Cruz Avila walked thrugh the frest every day in central Mexic’s Amanalc-Vall de Brav Basin. She wuld pick wd and medicinal plants. Smetimes ne plus ne des equal three, as was the case when Dave McNee met Claudia Mandekic 14 years ag. McNee was at a dentist appintment in Trnt when he chatted with Mandekic, wh was studying t be a teacher. When the students shwed up fr their first day, they weren’t exactly thrilled. Over the next few hurs, Mandekic and McNee gave the kids techniques t imprve their shting while als helping them calculate their field-gal percentage, which, in turn, taught them abut fractins (分数). The winning team wuld be determined based n which grup had the highest ttal percentage and had dne the mst efficient math. “When the bell rang, they were s fixated n cllecting their data and figuring ut which team wn that they didn’t leave,” says Mandekic. “I realized we might be nt smething.”
