The American pet Henry Wadswrth Lngfellw nce wrte: “Music is the universal language f mankind.” Music is everywhere. But why d we like it s much? One idea is that we quickly learn the patterns f music, and ur brains feel rewarded when they can “guess” what will cme next. But it may g deeper than that.
Neural resnance (神经共振) thery, r NRT, prpses that, just as ur bdy’s internal clck crrespnd with the light and dark cycles f the Earth, ur brains actually crrespnd with the pitch and rhythm f music. This may be why we enjy music s much and why we can dance, keep time with a sng, and even cmpse music. Edward W. Large says this isn’t just an abstract idea. “It’s literally the sund causing a physical resnance in the brain,” he tld UCnn Tday.
Alng with ther researchers frm the US, the Netherlands, the UK and Canada, Large recently explained the principles f NRT. The researchers nte, fr example, that there’s evidence f ur brains cntinuing t react t musical harmnies even after the sunds have stpped. And scans have shwn activity in the brain that crrelates with keeping time with music, even if the music desn’t actually have a regular beat the listener can hear.
Accrding t NRT, this resnance is what makes us want t mve and dance and music cnnects nt just t ur ears and ur brains, but even t ur limbs and ur spinal crds (脊髓). “This thery suggests that music is pwerful nt just because we hear it, but because ur brains and bdies becme it,” said Carline Palmer, ne f the researchers. “That has big implicatins fr medical applicatin, educatin and technlgy,” Palmer said.
The researchers say that NRT can give us insight int hw the brain and bdy are cnnected, hw music cmmunicates emtin and hw ur understanding f the effects f music culd be applied t brain health in the future.

Emma’s lve fr the guitar began at seven, when she fund her grandfather’s ld guitar in the dusty strerm. A warm feeling spread frm her fingertips t her chest as she tuched the strings — a cnnectin that grew strnger each year. Nw sixteen, her rm shwed her passin: bright guitar psters cvered the walls, a jar f clrful picks sat n her desk, and a well-used sngbk with quick ntes lay beside her bed. She practiced every day, slipping ut after dinner t g t guitar classes dwntwn. Thse evenings, learning t make meldies felt like real freedm.
Her father, Mr. Thmpsn, a careful engineer wh liked rder, saw her lve f guitar as a distractin. “Engineering equatins (方程) dn’t care abut guitar sls,” he’d say sharply, his brw wrinkling as he shut her bedrm dr while she was practicing. Every Thursday, he checked her reprt card with a ruler in hand, tapping hard n her weak math part until she pulled back. “A 72 in algebra wn’t get yu int MIT,” he’d say cldly, ignring her trying t explain that equatins cnfused her.
Emma tried hard t balance bth. She’d wake up at 5 a.m. t study trignmetry (三角学) by lamp light befre schl, and then hurry t the music rm at lunch t practice. While her guitar skills gt better, math stayed hard. Her music teacher, Mr Lee, seeing her talent, secretly put her in the city “Yung Musicians” cntest. Last Friday, she stepped n stage and played a sng she’d written abut her cnflicting interests. When named winner, she hugged her guitar, the gld trphy (奖杯) shining.
Smiling widely, she ran hme t shw the trphy befre dealing with her math test. But her father waited in the hallway, jaw tight, her wrinkled test in his hand. The red 68 written n tp seemed t glw like a warning.
