Several blcks away lies Natinal Cnstitutin (美国宪法) Center, a privately perated nnprfit museum that pened its drs in Philadelphia n July 4, 2003. Chimpanzees (黑猩猩)live in big, scial scieties and their main way t cmmunicate is thrugh making sunds and gestures such as raising their arms and tuching their muths. Researchers have als fund chimpanzees drum (连续敲击)n the rts f trees in the wild, which can be heard kilmeters away, but whether this was a frm f cmmunicatin was unclear.
T better understand hw chimpanzees use drumming, Catherine Hbaiter, a scientist at the University f St Andrews, and her team lked at tw species — eastern chimpanzees living in East Africa and western chimpanzees in West Africa. They fund that western chimpanzees drum with regular rhythms (节律)like the ticking f a clck while eastern chimpanzees’ drumming changes between shrt and lng silences after each hit.
The scientists think these differences culd be a result f the fact that eastern chimpanzees live in big grups and tend t be mre cmpetitive with their neighbrs, and western chimpanzees live in smaller grups with members living in an equal way.
In a secnd study, Marc Naguib, a bilgist at Wageningen University & Research, and his team fcused n anther unusual chimpanzee behavir: using stnes t drum n tree trunks (树干). Stne-assisted drumming als differed frm regular drumming in sme ways: Befre thrwing stnes, chimpanzees were mre likely t make sunds and less likely t mve their bdies frm side t side.
“I think we’re just scratching at the surface,” Hbaiter says. “Drumming is really a rich behavir that’s ging t tell us s much mre abut what it means t be a chimpanzee.”
In any case, the species and cultural differences culd help the cnservatin effrts f chimpanzees’ habitats. In recent years, researchers have pushed t include animal culture in cnservatin strategy. “Yu need these diverse ppulatins t maintain the richness f a species,” Naguib says. “But if yu lse a culture, like humans, yu wn’t get it back.”
      12. Hw des western chimpanzees’ drumming differ frm that f eastern chimpanzees?
      A. Western chimpanzees drum with fixed beats.
      B. Western chimpanzees drum faster and luder.
      C. Western chimpanzees create changeable rhythms.
      D. Western chimpanzees use stnes when drumming.

      C. The influence f human activities.
      D. Their separate scial structures.
      14. What des Hbaiter think f the current studies abut chimpanzees’ drumming?
      A. Misleading.B. Plentiful.C. Limited.D. Wrthless.
      15. What des the last paragraph fcus n abut preserving chimpanzee culture?
