Timely→ Includes fair, but firm deadlines
      Where t start?
      1. Start by thinking abut yur whle jb and the brad areas (r “buckets”) f
respnsibility and results ver which yu have cntrl.
      2. Develp a gal statement fr each bucket. T get the scale right, remember t
fcus n end results, rather than tasks.
      3. Gals shuld be high level enugh t include the cre utcmes fr which yu
are respnsible, but specific and clear enugh s yu will be able t measure
      success.
      4. Gals shuld be n-ging jb respnsibilities and any new prjects and
assignments that are specific t this perfrmance cycle.
      5. Having t many gals can be an indicatr that yur gals are defined at t
detailed a level and are fcused mre n tasks than n end results.
      6. If it seems that yur gals are becming t many and fcus n individual tasks,
it may be helpful t cnsider cmbining several gal statements int a brader
      utcme area.
21 .The authr recmmends SMART mst prbably because ______.

In the risky wrld f nuclear arms cntrl, Princetn student Lepwsky is explring
hw rbts can make inspectins mre accurate and acceptable t hst natins wrried
      abut invasive ( 侵 入 的 ) traditinal methds. His latest research has led t a rbt
perfrming inspectins withut saving sensitive infrmatin.
“The hst natin likely wn’t want a human inspectr pking their nse arund,” said
Lepwsky. “But even a rbt has memry and sensrs acquiring data.” The
gal is t have high-cnfidence inspectins withut the rbt saving
infrmatin. Fr example, the rbt wuld nt save radiatin measurements r create flr
      plans f sensitive areas.
The new prttype (样机) is built n an iRbt Create 3 platfrm, an educatinal rbt.
Rbts ffer advantages ver human inspectrs:they can tlerate higher radiatin levels,
are mre cnsistent, and can be cheaper. They als can be prgrammed t generate trust,
such as nt using cameras t avid seeing unwanted details. The idea fr the rbt started
with Lepwsky’s adviser, Glaser, wh was curius abut creating a “frgetful rbt” that
culd perfrm highly accurate nuclear arms inspectins but frget everything afterward. This
led t an even mre interesting idea: “Rather than frgetting, we’re nt even remembering in
the first place,” Lepwsky said. He believes this feature can reassure hsts cncerned abut
      privacy.
Lepwsky likes the interdisciplinary nature f his wrk — drawing n bth his
rbtics and plicy expertise — and he likes that it requires a breadth f
knwledge, nt just depth. He values that his research is grunded in
      real-life applicatins fr glbal security and nuclear nnprliferatin (防 扩 散 ).
Predicting when the rbt might be used in the field is difficult. “It’s easy t say, tday,
it’s nt very realistic, but yu have t be ready fr if and when it becmes pssible,” said
Lepwsky. Research int this prblem is very active. Because arms cntrl is changing, the
specific bjectives f future agreements are hard t predict. “But we can hpe they will be
psitive, and we need t be ready, technically. “
24 . In which aspect is Lepwsky’ s rbt different frm human inspectrs?
A .Data security. B .Memry capacity.
C .Scial acceptance. D .User friendliness.
25 .What is said abut the rbt in paragraph 3?
A .Its accurate system. B .Its privacy risks.
C .Its design mechanism. D .Its peratinal prblems.
26 .What des Lepwsky like abut his wrk?
A .Scientific research data. B .Real-time technical cperatin.
C .In-depth theretical studies. D .Integrated knwledge acrss fields.
27 .Which wuld be the best title fr this passage?
A .Princetn’s “Frgetful” Rbts in Glbal Security
      B . N-Memry Rbts:The Future f Nuclear Checks?
      C . Nuclear Arms Cntrl:Rbts r Human Inspectrs?
D . Lepwsky’ s “ Curius” Rbts fr Radiatin Detectin.
      C
      Redundancy (冗 余 ) is widely seen as a writing errr. “ Omit (删 除 ) needless wrds”
is perhaps the least redundant statement f this view, made famus by The Elements f Style.
In it, E.B .White wed the qute t his university English teacher, William Strunk. In the
classrm, Strunk “mitted s many needless wrds” that he was ften “left with nthing
mre t say, yet with time t fill” . S Strunk said everything three times. Did he really
need t repeat himself three times? If he had already said everything that was required, he
culd have let the class ut early. That he did s suggests there may be mre value in
      redundancy than meets the eye.
Redundancy can be frequently bserved n trains and planes. These are nisy and
distracting places where “Please take yur things” may nt be heard by all passengers.
Redundancy makes a signal rbust. Fr instance, spacecraft sending digital messages t
Earth include redundancies in the signal that allw engineers back hme t recnstruct
      the degraded transmissins (传输).
Anther pssible use f redundancy is simply t make listening r reading less
effrtful. If every pssible wrd that can be remved is remved, s that every remaining
ne is abslutely crucial, listening and reading becme stressful. Yu cannt let yur mind
wander fr even a mment. Such article is almst t thick with infrmatin; even a shrt
passage f this kind wuld be demanding t read.
The advice t keep it brief is still a gd idea. Blaise Pascal, a French authr f the
17th century, nce aplgised fr a lng letter by saying: “I have nt had time t make it
shrter.” Keeping things tight can be hard wrk fr the writer, but it saves time fr the
reader, at least up t a pint. Make yur article as shrt as necessary t keep yur reader
      reading — but nt mre.
28 . Why des the authr mentin the example f William Strunk?
      A .T illustrate a cmmn writing errr.
B .T questin the lgic f repetitive wrds.
C .T intrduce an influential English qute.
D .T justify the existence f redundant speech.
29 . What des the underlined wrd “ rbust” in Paragraph 2 prbably mean?
      A .Reliable. B .Cncrete. C .Cmprehensive. D .Vivid.
30 .In what way is redundancy useful?
A .It remves the stress f reading.
B .It saves readers frm mind-wandering.
C .It facilitates the readability f passages.
D .It packs articles with crucial infrmatin.
31 . What’ s the authr’ s suggestin regarding being brief?
      A .Write t the pint. B .Maintain a balance.
C .Cnsider the reader. D .Aplgize if necessary.
      D
Jss Naylr, knwn as the “ Irn Man” f fell running, was brn in 1936 in
Wasdale Head, Cumbria. Fell running is a sprt f ff-trail muntain racing, and Naylr

had tw discs (椎间盘) remved. Dctrs tld him t avid hard exercise and even gave
him a special underwear t wear, which he ignred. Instead, he returned t his wrk as a
      sheep farmer.
In the 1960 Wasdale Fell Race, Naylr hadn’t fficially entered but jined in
wearing his wrk bts. He quickly tk the lead but fell dwn because f cramps (肌肉抽
筋 ), finishing last. Despite this, he kept racing, imprving with each race. In 1971,
after cmpleting the Bb Graham Rund, he set a new recrd in the Natinal
Three Peaks Challenge, climbing the highest peaks in England, Sctland and Wales within
12 hurs, a recrd that still stands.
Naylr faced cuntless injuries ver the years, including lsing all his tenails and
skin n his feet during a tw-day race in 1976. He even lst a race in 1970 after being
kicked by a cw. Hwever, n amunt f pain, whether frm injuries r animals, culd stp
him. His reputatin grew, and in June 2024, hundreds f fell runners hnred him by
running eight miles up the valley near his hme t his funeral.
32 .What can we cnclude abut Naylr’ s early life?
A .He was very gd at schl sprts.

C .He lacked prper running equipment.
D .He struggled with farm respnsibilities.
33 . What can be inferred abut Jss Naylr’ s persnality?
A .He wrried a lt abut injuries.
B .He gave up easily when he failed.
C .He stayed strng and kept ging.
D .He thught little f tugh exercises.
34 . Why did Naylr’ s physical achievements seem extrardinary?

B .He achieved recrds despite injuries.
C .He imprved alternative medical treatments.
D .He was the first t attempt the challenges.
35 .What des the 2024 funeral event imply abut Naylr?

In tday’ s wrld where artificial intelligence ( AI) can cpy ur wrds, autmate ur
decisins and even simulate emtins, understanding what sets us apart isn’ t just phils-
phical. 36 Knwing what makes us unquestinably different frm
intelligent machines helps us prtect and even expand ur mst valuable strengths— ur
creativity, emtinal intelligence, life experiences and sense f purpse, s that we dn’t
just cexist with AI, but rise abve it, shaping the future instead f being shaped by it. Here
are three irreplaceable human attributes (属性).
We have real-life experiences while AI has data. Experience is ne f the mst
pwerful things that shape us frm the mment n which we’ re brn. 37
While AI, n the ther hand, can analyze massive data, it desn’t learn frm pain, jy, failure,
r success the way humans d. Experience isn’t just abut infrmatin— it’s abut persnal
      grwth.
3 8 We create stries t make sense f the wrld, find purpse in
struggle and cnnect ur past t ur future.Hwever, AI desn’t wnder abut “ the
why” behind what it des. Instead, it just prcesses requests and
generates respnses, withut caring abut the utcme beynd the gals that it’s
      pre-prgrammed t achieve.
We have free will while AI has cdes (代码). Humans can chse genersity ver
self- interest, frgiveness ver hatred, and innvatin ver cnfrmity. But AI nly
fllws rules. N matter hw advanced, it’s always bund by its prgramming.
      39
AI may be extrardinarily useful and helpful, but it will likely never prvide what
makes us human—empathy (共 情 ), true lve, meaningful purpse and life experiences.
40 In this way, we can ensure that technlgy will serve humanity—nt
      the ther way arund.
      A .It’s gaining ppularity.
B .Besides, it is deeply practical.
C .We are cnsiderate while AI is creative.
D . We seek meaning while AI fllws instructins.
E . It desn’ t have desires, beliefs r independent thughts.
F .Every failure, success and challenge can influence ur future decisins.
G . S value ur and thers’ emtinal depth, life experiences and creative ptential.
