When I gt my first research prject t wrk, I was s excited. Seeing research in actin was enjyable. My excitement, thugh, was sn cut shrt when my prfessr asked me t write a research paper n the prject. My bdy tensed. Writing was the last thing I wanted t d; it’s ne reasn why I pursued science in the first place.
I had hated writing since I was a little by. But I culdn’t avid it: writing classes were required in high schl. Fr hurs, I stared at blank pages, trying t turn my disrganised thughts int fluent sentences. My teachers wuld return my papers littered with red, shwing my paragraphs were ut f rder. I was frustrated t n end. Hw culd I knw what was gd if there was n bjectively right answer? Maybe I wasn’t cut ut fr writing.
I studied engineering in cllege. A few years later, I jined a research lab. The prfessr assigned me an initial prject t imprve the efficiency f an inductr (电路感应器). I spent weeks setting up a test fr a new design. When I gt the results, thugh, the numbers weren’t gd. I kept trying new designs, using the results t brainstrm ideas with a team f researchers. Finally, after
dzens f designs, we had ne that culd wrk. I was verjyed — until my prfessr tld me t write that research paper.
In panic, I asked a graduate student in my lab fr help. I carefully wrte an utline. But when I asked him fr feedback, I sn fund the paper full f red marks. Befre I culd quit in defeat, thugh, the graduate student explained red didn’t mean I was a bad writer. Writing isn’t a ne-and- dne thing. It requires revising yur wrk, ften several times. Suddenly it ccurred t me, “Hadn’t I dne the same thing when I was designing my research prject?” I kept imprving my utline, eventually turning it int sentences and paragraphs, guided by feedback frm thers. Finally, I made it, and surprisingly, I was having fun.
Frm then n, writing became ne f my favurite parts f research, and it still is tday. It’s a future I never culd have imagined during my early struggles with writing classes. But I came arund.

When I mentined t sme friends that we all have accents (口音), mst f them prudly replied, “Well, I speak perfect English/ Chinese/ etc. But this kind f respnse makes me fail t understand the true meaning f accents.
Usually, what we mean when we say smene “has an accent” is that their accent is different frm the lcal ne, r that prnunciatins are different frm ur wn. But this definitin f accents is limiting and culd give rise t prejudice. Funnily enugh, in terms f the language study, every persn speaks with an accent. It is the regular differences in hw we prduce sunds that define ur accents. Even if yu dn’t hear it yurself, yu speak with sme srt f accent. In this sense, it’s pintless t pint ut that smene “has an accent”. We all d!
Every persn speaks a dialect (方言), t. In the field f language study, a dialect is a versin f a language that is characterized by its variatins f structure, phrases and wrds. Fr instance, “Yu gt eat r nt?” (meaning “Have yu eaten?”) is an acceptable and understd questin in Singapre Oral English. The fact that this expressin wuld cause a standard American English speaker t take pause desn’t mean that Singapre Oral English is “wrng” r “ungrammatical”. The sentence is well-frmed and clearly cmmunicative, accrding t native Singapre English speakers’ slid system f grammar. Why shuld it be wrng just because it’s different?
We need t mve beynd a narrw cnceptin f accents and dialects — fr the benefit f everyne.
Language differences like these prvide deep understandings int peple’s cultural experiences and backgrunds. In a glbal age, the way ne speaks is definitely a part f ne’s
identity. Mst peple wuld be happy t talk abut the cultures behind their speech. We’d learn mre abut the wrld we live in and make friends alng the way.
What des the authr think f his/ her friends’ respnse in paragraph 1?
It reflects their self-cnfidence.B.It reflects their language levels. C.It misses the pint f cmmunicatin.D.It misses the real meaning f accents.
Why des the authr use the example f Singapre Oral English?
T supprt the use f dialects.B.T shw the diversity f dialects.
      C.T crrect a grammatical mistake.D.T highlight a traditinal apprach.
What des the authr recmmend us t d in the last paragraph?
Learn t speak with yur lcal dialect.B.Seek fr an fficial definitin f accents.
C.Appreciate the value f accents and dialects. D.Distinguish ur lcal languages frm thers’.
What can be a suitable title fr this passage?
A.Everyne Has an AccentB.Accents Weaken Our Uniqueness C.Dialects Lead t Misunderstanding D.Standard English Is at Risk

Arund 40 millin tns f electrnic waste, knwn as e-waste, is prduced every year. This includes electrical r electrnic equipment that has been discarded. But where des it all g? In the US alne, 100 millin mbile phnes, 41 millin cmputers and ver 20 millin televisins are thrwn int landfills (垃圾填埋场) in a year. Even fr standard waste this is a big headache, because any materials that are buried in the grund can’t be easily recvered and recycled. Recycling electrnics can save energy and means that less f Earth’s natural resurces need t be mined.
Failing t recycle e-waste is extremely damaging the envirnment due t the nature f the materials used in mdern devices. While heavy metals and chemicals imprve a device’s safety and user experience, they becme pisnus if they’re nt dealt with prperly. Yur ld phnes, Gamebys, kettles, micrwaves and mre can end up in landfills, leaking their harmful cntents int the sil, water and air. Nt nly des this kill wildlife and destry ecsystems, but the accumulatin (累积) f pisn can impact human health t. As heavy metals and chemicals flw int lakes and rivers, drinking water becmes plluted. These pisns spread thrugh the sil, impacting the health f crps and animals that peple als rely n.
In sme western cuntries, e-waste isn’t hidden ut f sight in landfills but is burnt in giant, pen junkyards. They even ship waste electrnics t ther cuntries t deal with, and this ften ends up in dumps acrss Africa and Asia. Wrkers in these places are expsed t plluted lands and chemical gas.
It is urgent that we shuld reduce the damaging and unsustainable side f e-waste prductin. Rare earth metals, sme plastics and chemicals can be fed int the next generatin f electrnics. The steps t prper recycling f e-waste are extensive and need large investment, but mre and mre cuntries arund the wrld are turning t e-waste recycling.
What des the underlined wrd “discarded” in Paragraph 1 mean?
      Repaired. B.Prtected.C.Used.D.Abandned.
What can be learned frm Paragraph 2?
A.E-waste has a permanent effect n the envirnment.
B.E-waste may d harm t bth ecsystems and humans.
C.Heavy metals and chemicals are pisnus t the users.
D.Burying e-waste int landfills is an effective way t recycle.
Hw des the authr describe the handling f e-waste in Western cuntries?
      By prviding data.B.By asking questins.
      C.By listing examples.D.By ffering a definitin.
What might the authr cntinue t talk abut?
      Slutins t destrying e-waste.B.Ways t recycle e-waste prperly. C.Applicatins f recycled materials.D.Investments in restring ecsystems.
