In 1982, Hpfield made a netwrk that helps cmputers stre and recall patterns. This is like hw ur brains remember things. A year later, Hintn made the Bltzmann machine. It allws cmputers t learn n their wn t find patterns, like sptting different things in pictures. Accrding t Ellen Mns, chair f the Nbel Cmmittee fr Physics, their wrk has already been f the greatest benefit since artificial neural netwrks(神经网络)are being widely used.
      Physilgy r medicine
US scientists Victr Ambrs and GaryRuvkun discvered hw genes (基因)are cntrlled in cells (细胞).Althugh all cells in ur bdies have the same genes, different types, like muscle and nerve (神经)cells, wrk in different ways. They fund ut that tiny helpers called micrRNAs help cntrl which genes are active in cells. This discvery is imprtant fr understanding hw things develp and functin.

Beijing silk figurines (北京绢人) are made frm thin silk, gauze (纱罗) and damask (锦缎) and designed with detailed facial expressins. With their delicate craftsmanship and cultural meaning, the art f making them was listed as a natinal intangible cultural heritage in 2021.
Jia Tianqi, 30, has spent six years learning and preserving the craft. “Fr many, these silk figurines are just art pieces, but t me, they are like my children,” Jia expressed.
Creating a silk figurine has cmplex steps, including designing, painting, making clthes and prps (道具). “Each step requires the greatest patience and lve,” Jia added.
Befre making a figurine, the artist must design it and make sure the head-t-bdy rati is crrect. “Accrding t aesthetic standards, fr a standing silk figurine, the head-t-bdy rati is 1:7; fr a seated psitin, it is 1:5,” Jia said. But since mst traditinal silk figurines are 80 t 100 centimeters tall, every part is small. “A slight tremr (哆嗦) means starting ver,” she said.
Because silk figurines ften shw nblewmen r characters frm classic literature, artists try t express their cultural spirit.
“When making Wang Xifeng frm Dream f the Red Chamber , we referenced the 1987 TV adaptatin fr her multiple hairpin (发簪) lk t shw her status as an imprtant figure in the Jia family,” Jia explained. “Fr Lin Daiyu, we reflected her identity as a dependent thrugh her gestures, such as lwering her head and frwning.” This requires reading t understand the culture behind the characters.
Since making silk figurines takes time and effrt, few cntinue the craft. “Due t expensive materials, silk figurines are cstly, and we ften dn’t knw if they will sell,” Jia said. “Nwadays, peple prefer quick mney, s ut f 100 peple wh cme t learn, nly ne r tw persist in carrying n the traditin.”
T address this, Jia and her team wrk with peple frm all walks f life t raise awareness. They’re als explring AI technlgy t make design and material analysis mre accurate and affrdable.

Mst f us are familiar with Grundhg Day, wherein a large grundhg (土拨鼠)checks t see its shadw n February 2 and helps t predict when winter will end. But have yu ever heard abut hw a muntain twn in Nrth Carlina uses a caterpillar knwn as the Wlly Wrm t make similar predictins?
Accrding t the flklre, the amunt f black n the wlly wrm in autumn predicts the severity f the upcming winter. The lnger the wlly wrm's black bands are, the lnger, clder, snwier, and mre severe the winter will be. Similarly, a wider middle brwn band is assciated with a milder upcming winter. The psitin f the lngest dark bands suppsedly indicates which part f winter will be cldest r hardest. If the head end f the caterpillar is dark, the beginning f winter will be severe. If the tail end is dark, the end f winter will be cld. In additin, the wlly wrm caterpillar has 13 segments t its bdy, which traditinal frecasters say crrespnd t the 13 weeks f winter.
Scientific studies n wrm frecasting are few and far between. The mst ften cited is a small trial that American Museum f Natural Histry entmlgist Hward Curran cnducted in 1948. Having heard abut the caterpillar flklre(民间传说), Curran traveled t Bear Muntain State Park t cllect wlly wrms each fall fr eight years. He fund that if the wrms had brwn markings n mre than a third f their bdy, winters tended t be milder.
Mst scientists discunt the flklre f caterpillar predictins as just that, flklre. "It's a wnderful stry, but I d think it was a playful trial," says Je Bggs, an entmlgist at Ohi State University Extensin wh has studied wlly wrms. "Curran was a real scientist. He had a bunch f papers published, but he never published this ne — prbably because he knew it wuldn't stand up t peer review."
Mike Peters, an entmlgist at the University f Massachusetts, desn't disagree, but he says there culd be a link between the band f a wlly wrm and the severity f winter. Peters suggests that the timing f their grwth and envirnmental cnditins, such as temperature, misture levels, and fd surces, can impact the appearance f wlly wrms, including their size, clratin, and band patterns. By analyzing these characteristics, researchers can ptentially infer infrmatin abut the weather cnditins. "The band des say smething abut a heavy winter," he says. "The nly thing is that it's telling yu abut the previus year."
28.Hw d peple predict the weather thrugh wlly wrms?
      A.By analyzing their living habits.
B.By studying clr bands n their bdies.
C.By measuring the change f their size.
D.By calculating the number f their segments.
      29. What is Hward Curran's finding based n?
      A.His persnal bservatins.
      B.A survey n the lcals.
      C.Studies by previus scientists.
      D.Statistics cllected by the museum.
      30. What is Je Bggs's attitude twards the flklre?
      A. Psitive. B. Unclear. C. Skeptical. D. Favrable.
      31. Which statement might Mike Peters agree with?
A.The caterpillar frecasting needs lng-term data t supprt it.
B.Wlly wrms can help predict the severity f winter accurately.
C.The cld envirnment has a great impact n caterpillars' grwth.
D.The clr band f caterpillars can be a mirrr f past weather.
      D

One f my clleagues, Sarah, a new teacher wh had just graduated, shared the same cncern fr Jim. She made a prpsal that we shuld help Jim smehw. Determined t make a difference, I, teaming up with Sarah, made a plan t incrprate (使融入) Jim mre meaningfully int ur classrm cmmunity. We began by “hiring” Jim fr small tasks arund the class r ur schl, such as helping t rganize the library r assisting with classrm setups. In return, we paid him a mdest “salary” frm ur wn funds, careful t make it clear that this was nt charity but recgnitin f his hard wrk and valuable cntributins. We als tk the time t instruct Jim, ffering after-schl teaching lessns t help him with his studies and prviding encuragement and guidance fr his future ambitins. Sarah and I made a cnscius effrt t create a supprtive envirnment where Jim felt safe t express himself. We listened t his stries, acknwledged his struggles, and celebrated his successes, n matter hw small.
Hwever, life tk an unexpected turn. Tw weeks later, I had t leave the schl due t unfreseen circumstances. My heart was heavy with cncern fr Jim, especially abut hw Sarah, a yung and pssibly less experienced teacher wuld handle this situatin. I wrried abut whether she wuld be able t cntinue the delicate balance f supprt and encuragement that we had carefully built. Mrever, Jim had becme used t ur regular guidance and the stability we prvided.

Thinking abut all these, I culdn’t wait t give Sarah a call. With a heavy heart, I dialed Sarah’s number. My mind raced with questins and cncerns, but as sn as she picked up, her calm vice reassured me. “Dn’t wrry,” she said sftly. “I’ve been thinking abut Jim a lt t.” And she prmised t d her best t maintain the balance we had established. She added that she wuldn’t let me dwn. Her wrds were like cmfrting hands, easing my wrried mind and filling me with a sense f hpe.
When I revisited the schl, I was amazed t see the transfrmatin in Jim. He was n lnger the quiet, reserved student I nce knew. He was actively participating in class discussins, sharing his ideas with enthusiasm. Sarah had nt nly cntinued the supprt but had als encuraged him t explre his passins and talents. Seeing Jim prgress under Sarah’s guidance, I realized the true impact f sympathy and devtin in shaping a yung life. It was a pwerful reminder that even in the face f challenges, with the right trust, a yung teacher can grw strnger and a child’s ptential can als be develped.
