Every time I picked up my sn at Day Care last year, ur reunin was interrupted by the same questin frm the ther 3-year-lds: “Why are yu in that wheelchair?” Sme peple thught I shuld have a class visit where I explained my disability, maybe read a relevant bk. T be fair, I am a gd candidate fr this kind f cnversatin.
I started using a wheelchair when I was 6, and when I discvered disability studies in graduate schl, I understd, fr the first time in my life, disability as an identity. I started creating “mini memirs (回忆录)” n scial media that shared my firsthand experience — the feeling f being stared at and being prayed ver by strangers. I started t understand the wheelchair as part f my brand. Over time, I rarely deviated frm psts tied t disability. Even if it wasn’t at the center f the stry, I cnnected thse things with a direct line fr readers.
This way f shwing myself pushed my writing int the public cnversatin in 2020. Five years later, I still travel the cuntry speaking abut disability, accessibility, and inclusin. It’s a dream t d this wrk.
It might explain why I wasn’t eager t educate my sn’s class n disability. This is my area f expertise! I understand my difference is unavidably visible, but I nticed the lnging. I wanted these kids t see that ur family was just ne kind f difference in a sea f differences.
And the truth is, many f us with disabilities aren’t just anther parent in the rm. It ften feels like I have tw chices: erasure (消除) r sptlight — “I dn’t see yu as disabled” r “I fllw yu t learn mre abut disability.” Still, there is an idea in me that I wish t blur (模糊) the edges f a fixed brand and play freely in the spaces f discvery.
Maybe this is a lk at the lng-term gal I dream f — disability as a living part f a greater whle. Neither hidden in the shadws nr frced int the sptlight, but integrated int a cmmunity, accepted as ne valuable part f ur shared humanity.
      24. What des the underlined wrd “deviated” in paragraph 2 prbably mean?

      C. She wanted t be seen as a nrmal parent.
      D. She dubted kids’ understanding f disability.

Engineers have always tried hard t make lifelike rbts. But re-creating the cmplex functins is impssible with artificial materials, says Anand Mishra, an engineer at Crnell University. Using life-frms t build machines can vercme sme f these limits. T make rbts that are similarly sensitive t their surrundings, Mishra has turned t fungi (真菌).
Fungi aren’t plants, but Mishra is interested in ne f fungi’s mst plantlike features, mycelia (菌丝体). These rtlike structures dig thrugh sil fr nutrients and can detect envirnmental signals such as light, heat and chemicals. Mishra’s team grew mycelia directly int sensrs attached t tw rbts. The fungi cmmunicated with the rbts thrugh electrical signals called actin ptentials. These electrical signals are similar t thse prduced by heart and nerve cells.
Using fungi in rbts is still “pretty new”, Mishra says. His team nw hpes t test hw such tech respnds t ther signals, such as gases. One way their rbts’ sensry superpwers might help in the real wrld is in agriculture. Future “mushrm” rbts culd walk thrugh crp fields, testing sil health and ther cnditins as they g.
While fungi may help rbts better interact with the wrld, plant pwers culd help devices better survive it. “Many artificial technlgies have a shelf life,” says materials scientist Fabian Meder. Electrnics start t break dwn in a few years. Yet the ldest trees can stand tall fr thusands f years. And while brken electrnics require repairs, plants can recver frm damage and adapt t new envirnments.
Meder has designed artificial leaves that draw n an unlikely energy surce: static (静电) electricity created by wind. He places artificial leaves n plants. The false leaves include a layer f rubber — a material gd at building up static charge. When wind tuches ne f these plants, the artificial leaves hit real leaves. Meder’s studies have shwn that such devices can light up LEDs. Meder is excited abut this new way t make use f a ptential energy surce: “Almst like thse Dctr Wh Treebrgs surviving n the light f faraway stars.”
      32. Why des Mishra use fungi t make rbts?
