In the late Eastern Han Dynasty, ne winter, many pr peple were frstbitten (冻伤), especially their ears.
Zhang Zhngjing made sme ear-shaped fd with sme Chinese medicine in it. He called these creatins jia’er, which means “tender ear” in English. After eating the jia’er, peple felt warm all ver. Then, ver time, the frstbite disappeared.
Zhang Zhngjing cntinued t give ut jia’er t pr, hungry peple until the Eve f the Spring Festival. T celebrate the Spring Festival and their recvery (痊愈), peple made their wn jia’er.
