In the summer f 2019, I started a sl backpacking trip alng the Appalachian Trail, a 2,000-mile jurney that tested my physical and mental limits. What began as a quest fr slitude (独处) quickly became a transfrmative experience, revealing the pwer f resilience (韧性) and human cnnectin.
On the third day, a vilent strm struck, leaving me trapped in a dense frest. My tent was trn apart by the wind, and my supplies were scattered. As I tk shelter under a tree, shaking and all wet, I questined my decisin t undertake this jurney alne. Yet, in that mment f vulnerability, I discvered an inner strength I never knew existed. I recalled psychlgist Albert Bandura’s thery f self-efficacy (自我效能感), which assumes that vercming challenges bsts ne’s belief in their capabilities. This realizatin fueled my determinatin t rebuild my shelter and cntinue.
The strm als brught unexpected friendship. A grup f fellw hikers, nticing my truble, ffered me fd and shared their tent. Their kindness cntradicted my initial assumptin that slitude was essential fr self-discvery. Scilgist Rbert Putnam’s cncept f “scial capital” came t mind — netwrks f supprt that enhance resilience. Thrugh shared stries and mutual aid, we frmed a temprary cmmunity, prving that interdependence des nt cut dwn strength but multiplies it.
By the end f the trip, I realized the trail was mre than a physical challenge. It was a metaphr fr life’s barriers. Each blister (水疱), navigatinal errr, and mment f dubt taught me that resilience is built thrugh experience, nt inbrn. The jurney reshaped my view f slitude and cmmunity, shwing that true grwth happens when we embrace bth independence and cnnectin.

Researchers at UNSW Sydney created PainWaive-a game that teaches users t cntrl faulty brain activity causing lng-lasting nerve pain, ffering a hme-based alternative t piid (阿片类药物) painkillers. .
A study led by Prfessrs Gustin and Hesam-Shariati frm UNSW Sydney’s Neur Recvery Research Hub, published in the Jurnal f Pain, tested the technlgy. Fur participants wre EEG headsets (measuring brainwaves) while playing interactive games fr fur weeks, with the app respnding in real time t changes in brainwave patterns.
“Participants received headsets and tablets preladed with the game. They were als given tips fr different mental strategies. Data was sent remtely. After brief training, users perated the system n their wn. “They felt empwered managing pain at hme,” said Hesam-Shariati.
The Pain Waive prject builds n Prfessr Sylvia Gustin’s grund-breaking research int changes in the brain’s thalamus — a central relay center in the brain — assciated with nerve pain. Three ut f fur participants shwed significant reductins in pain. Overall, the pain relief was cmparable t r greater than that ffered by piids. “Restrictins in the study’s size, design and duratin limit ur ability t generalise the findings r rule ut placeb (安慰剂) effects. But the results we’ve seen are exciting and give us cnfidence t mve t the next stage,” nted Dr. Hesam-Shariati.
Initially, the team planned t use existing cmmercial EEG systems, but they were either t expensive r didn’t meet the quality needed t deliver the prject. Instead, they develped their wn. Thanks t 3D printing, headset csts drpped t $300 vs $1,000-$20,000 fr standard systems. Gustin stated, “This technlgy culd prvide affrdable hme pain care, especially where treatments-are scarce.”
The researchers are nw calling fr participants t register their interest in tw upcming trials: the Spinal (脊柱的) Pain Trial, investigating its ptential t reduce lng-lasting spinal pain, and the StPain Trial, explring its use in treating the pain in peple with a spinal injury.
8. What can be inferred abut the PainWaive headset?
A. It is mre effective yet t cstly.B. It values affrdability mre than quality.
C. It requires cnstant prfessinal supervisin.D. It can be perated independently after training.
9. Hw des PainWaive’s pain relief effect cmpare t piids?
A. Similar r better.B. Slightly less effective.
C. Cnsistently superir.D. Nt yet measurable.
10. Why des the authr mentin the reduced cst f the headset?

Nwadays, with human-AI interactins becming mre frequent and cmplex, scientists have made remarkable effrts t better understand human-AI relatinships in terms f trust and cmpaninship.
A grup f researchers frm Waseda University, Japan, including research assciate Fan Yang frm the Faculty f Letters, Arts and Sciences have used attachment thery t examine human-AI relatinships. Their findings were recently published nline in the jurnal Current Psychlgy n May 9, 2025.
Mr. Yang explains the mtivatin behind their research. “In recent years, generative AI such as ChatGPT has becme increasingly strnger and wiser, ffering nt nly infrmatinal supprt but als a sense f security.”
Ntably, the team develped a new self-reprt scale called the Experiences in Human-AI Relatinships Scale, r EHARS, an instrument measuring attachment-related tendencies tward AI. This innvative instrument identifies tw critical dimensins: attachment anxiety, characterized by users’ need fr emtinal reassurance frm AI systems, and attachment avidance, reflecting discmfrt with clseness and preferences fr maintaining emtinal distance frm AI.
They fund that nearly 75% f participants turned t AI fr advice, while abut 39% perceived AI as a cnstant, dependable presence.
Hwever, these findings d nt mean that humans are currently frming genuine emtinal attachments t AI. Rather, the study demnstrates that psychlgical framewrks used fr human relatinships may als apply t human-AI interactins.
The results als suggest a need fr hnesty and penness in AI systems that simulate (模拟) emtinal relatinships, such as rmantic AI apps r caregiver rbts, t prevent emtinal ver-dependence. Furthermre, EHARS culd be used by develpers r psychlgists t assess hw peple relate t AI emtinally and adjust AI interactin strategies accrdingly.
As AI has been increasingly applied t everyday life, peple may begin t seek nt nly infrmatin but als emtinal supprt frm AI systems. “It prmtes a better understanding f hw humans cnnect with technlgy n a scietal level, helping t guide plicy and design practices that priritize psychlgical well-being,” cncludes Mr. Yang.
12. What des a user with attachment anxiety wuld prefer AI t d?
A. Reassure them frequently.B. Limit emtinal expressins.
C. Prvide minimal respnses.D. Avid persnal tpics.
13. What is the authr’s attitude tward the research findings?
A. Highly skeptical.B. Overly enthusiastic.
C Plitically neutral.D. Cautiusly ptimistic.
14. Hw is the text rganized?
A. Prblem-slutin-result.B. Cncept-tl-finding-applicatin.
C. Cncept-data-critique-implicatin.D. Thery-experiment-result-discussin.
15. What can be a suitable title fr the text?
A. The Emtinal Dangers f AI Cmpaninship
B. Measuring Human Trust in Advanced Technlgies
C. Applying Attachment Thery t Human-AI Bnds
D. The EHARS: A New Tl fr AI Psychlgy
