My family had a rm that we called the Library, but even back then I knew it was just ur dining rm with a few bkshelves arund a small table. When I was a kid, I was tld that all these bks are precius things— they must never be flded, bent, r brken. Any dirty marks r ntes n a bk are banned and ur reading shuld always be a clean activity since it’s what separates us frm the beasts. Preservatin f all texts was the mst imprtant thing in the wrld.
Years later, when I began reading everything I culd in my early teens, I tipted int the Library ne day and discvered, t my hrrr, that all the bks were still extremely new. In that mment I knew that all thse silly rules arund reading and bks were dead wrng and that there
was nthing sadder in this wrld than an unused bk— clean, withut any trace f the reader at all.
Nw here’s the secret: gd reading is messy reading. If I want the kind f nvel that gets deep int my bnes, the srt f nn-fictin mystery that stays with me years after the fact, then I must bring sticky ntes (便利贴) and let my bks get scuffed (磨损) alng the way. I shuld always walk away frm a bk with visible prgress f my reading.
After years f treating my bks as if they ught t be preserved in a museum, I nw believe that yu shuld hnur the bks by breaking them. Read them all s messily! Truly read the bks, anytime and anywhere, n matter hw much we f ld them, bend them, r tear them! Thrw them int yur backpack r leave them pen by the side f yur bed. Dn’t wrry abut stains r trn edges after years f reading. That is what a bk is. That is what a bk is fr.

The walls f failure surrunded me. I saw my teacher’s eyes fixed n my every mve. My mm’s blank expressin betrayed ne thing: disappintment. “He is nt giving his full ptential,” I heard my teacher say. I stared, afraid, ashamed, and determined. My determinatin was nt t excel and put my best effrt int imprvement; my determinatin tld me t give up.
It was my first year in the United States. I was a fifth grader, and everything arund me seemed alien. My native language had been Spanish, and after cming t the United States frm Puert Ric because f serius family prblems, I just felt like hiding inside my metaphrical (隐喻的) shell. The schl itself was bright and very welcming. The bright walls with clred dinsaurs, dragn and cartns were appealing, and the distinct smell f crayns, play dugh (面团) , and chalks made the place feel like my hme.
Then why did I have such a negative attitude? It was nt because my teachers did nt supprt me. They were willing t stay after schl with me t help me learn the cncepts. It was nt because my classmates did nt want me there. Mst f them invited me t sit with them at lunch. It was nt because I culd nt talk t anyne; I had a bilingual teacher with me all day, helping me.
My negative attitude was the result f frustratin and lack f interest in study. N matter hw hard I tried, the mysterius cde knwn as “English” wuld nt take rt in my brain. I tried fr hurs n end t imprve my grammar, prnunciatin, and vcabulary, but the unknwn language “did nt want t be learned”.

      第二节(满分 25 分)
That afternn, after the parent-teacher cnference finished, my mm and I were n the way hme. The
silence between us was deafening, filled nly with the hum f the car engine and the ccasinal hnk f a passing vehicle. Mm’s face was etched with cncern, but her vice was gentle as she spke. “I knw this is tugh fr yu, but remember, we’re in this tgether. Yur teachers see ptential in yu, and I d t. I prmise t be yur partner in this jurney.” Her wrds were like a warm hug, melting away the chill f my self-dubt. I ndded, tears welling up in my eyes, determined t break thrugh the walls f failure and prve them all wrng.
After that day, I changed myself gradually. I embraced the challenge f mastering English, turning my frustratin int fuel fr imprvement. At schl, I actively participated in discussins, even if my sentences were halting and filled with mistakes. Slwly but surely, I nticed prgress. My classmates nticed the change t, and their smiles f inclusin warmed my heart. The walls f failure began t crumble, replaced by a sense f accmplishment and jy. I realized that giving up was never an ptin; determinatin and perseverance were the keys t unlcking my full ptential.
