In Gaithersburg, Maryland this fall, art curatr (馆长) Sandra Davis set 14 chairs n display in the
Arts Barn’s prfessinal art gallery. Each chair, handmade by a different artist, symblized a mental
health issue that the artist had persnally cnfrnted.
Curtney Mhring’s chair, “Buttned Up,” was a black, high-backed chair cated in buttns and
bunched fabric that cmmunicated discmfrt. And Davis herself had a piece in the exhibitin — a
rainbw-clred creatin titled “Clr Me Manic.” Fr many f the artists, it was an pprtunity t try a
medium that they had never attempted befre.
The exhibitin — titled “Pull Up a Chair 2.0” — was a kind f “sequel” t a similar shwcase that
Davis curated in 2022, which als featured handmade chairs. At the gallery, the artists came in t talk
abut their art, but the night sn transfrmed int a deeper cnversatin abut the feelings f anxiety,

      pandemic.

We had what we call an ‘artist rundtable,’ where each f the artists came t talk abut what their
inspiratin was, what they were feeling when they were creating the chair, and it ended up feeling very
much like a grup therapy (治疗) sessin,” Davis said.
This year, Davis wanted t reprduce that experience n a grander scale, by pening it up t the
public and inviting guests t pull up a chair and talk abut the art — and hw it relates t their wn
      mental health jurneys.

We knw the mental health cnversatin is tp f mind,” Davis said. “We hear it in the news.
We’re reading abut it. We’re talking abut it at schl. But we haven’t really necessarily felt like it’s
still a welcming cnversatin.” But Davis believes we can slwly change thse cnversatins fr the
better — and it starts with making space fr them.

natural sundscapes are falling silent as bird ppulatins decline.
But des the silencing f ur sundscapes matter t us? The shrt answer is yes. There is grwing
evidence abut the health benefits f spending time in nature, including reducing risks f heart disease,
diabetes and anxiety. Yet while the general benefits f being utside in nature may seem instinctive, the
cntributins f natural sunds t this are less understd.
Our study explres the link between birdsng and peple, specifically n English vineyards (葡萄
园 ). We surveyed the experience f 186 wine-tur participants acrss three vineyards with varying
sundscapes. We als enhanced sme vineyard sundscapes with hidden speakers, which played the
sngs f five additinal bird species. This was designed t see hw participants’ engagement with
nature wuld be affected by increasing the diversity f birds and sngs.
The results were fascinating. Visitrs wh experienced luder and mre cmplex sunds —
whether n vineyards with naturally richer sundscapes r n thse we had enhanced — reprted that
they had enjyed the sunds mre. They als felt mre cnnected t nature and mre satisfied with their
tur. With richer sundscapes, they felt mre mindful and psitive during the turs, reprting that they
felt freer frm wrk, rutine and respnsibility.
Our study is a clear demnstratin f the direct effect that birdsng has n ur wellbeing. It shws
that bird cnservatin culd enhance ur experience f spending time in nature and give rise t psitive
emtins. The wrld we experience tday is unlike what ur grandparents experienced. We are
increasingly discnnected frm nature, and nature’s benefits n ur wellbeing are lessening as a result.
What is mst cncerning is that these changes are accepted as the new nrm.
We hpe ur findings lead t mre peple thinking like Harrisn, wh cncluded: It ges t shw

The next time yu’re feeling depressed r angry at the wrld, ask yurself if yu’ve really been
dealt a pr hand — r if, just maybe, yu were expecting t much. That’s ne message that can be
drawn frm a recent study n entitlement, a persnality trait characterized by exaggerated feelings f
deservingness and superirity. Entitlement may lead t cnstant disappintment, say researchers frm
      Case Western Reserve University.
The authrs reached these cnclusins after analyzing mre than 170 academic papers. They fund
that peple wh pssess high levels f entitlement cnsistently fall victim t a three-part cycle: First,
they dn’t always get everything they think they deserve, leaving them cnstantly vulnerable t unmet
expectatins. Thse unmet expectatins are then perceived as injustices, leading t emtins like anger
and sadness. Finally, t justify thse emtins, entitled peple reassure themselves f their wn
specialness. This helps them feel better temprarily, but ultimately starts the prcess all ver again.
At extreme levels, entitled peple repeatedly expse themselves t the risk f feeling frustrated and
disappinted with life. They als tend t suffer frm pr relatinships, interpersnal cnflicts, and

depressin, says c-authr Julie Exline, PhD, a prfessr f psychlgical sciences at Case Western
Reserve. “S much f entitlement is abut cmpetitin — being better r mre deserving than ther
peple,” she tld Health.cm. “It really sets in ppsitin t sciety, and it can be very islating.”

It’s nt easy fr true narcissists (自恋者) t see themselves fr what they are, r t change their
way f thinking.” Exline says. But she des believe that, fr many well-intentined peple, feelings f
entitlement can be cntrlled. “Cnditining yurself t think abut ther peple and what they deserve

and als being willing t admit yur wn faults and weaknesses — can help yu feel mre cnnected
      t thers,” she says.
We shuld be als aware that nt all feelings f entitlement are wrng r bad: We shuldn’t just
lwer ur standards r stp expecting things we truly d deserve, just s we can be happier. But if yu
d ntice that yu’ve develped an verblwn sense f self — and it’s causing yu t be annyed r nt

      读后续写评分细则】
      一、读后续写五个档次及分数值
      2
      1-25 分;16-20 分;11-15 分;6-10 分;1-5 分
      二、各档次取中间分数为各档次基准分
      阅卷时从头到尾迅速看完一遍文章后,根据答卷整体性,确定该文章档次,给出对应基准分;再根据文
      章具体情况,以基准分的为基础,在本档次分值范围内适当加分或减分,确定最后得分。(合理逻辑+
      正确表达)
      各档次基准分数为: 23--18--13--8--3
      (1)第一档 23 漂漂亮亮: 几乎没有错,读起来没有阻力,不影响交际,逻辑清楚合理,句型丰富;
      (2)第二档 18 清清楚楚:隔三差五有错,1/3 有问题,没跑题,部分影响交际;
      (3)第三档 13 马马虎虎(可能有很多学生是这个档次):一半出错,影响交际;
      (4)第四档 8 糊里糊涂:1/3 句子可以,2/3 句子不行,隔三差五有点对;
      (5)第五档 3 一塌糊涂:基本无正确表达。
      三、额外扣分情况:
      (1)词数:读后续写少于 120 字的,酌情扣 2-4 分。
      高三 2 月英语答案 第 7 页 共 10 页

      (2)续写空白一字未写,或抄写其他文章和读后续写原文,或所写情节与本文“共同救助被困小猫而发展
      成为好朋友”毫无关系,给 0 分。
      (3)续写只写一段的,最多只能给 12 分。
      (4)书写较差以致影响交际的,酌情扣 1-3 分。
      (5)根据第一段和第二段所给句子再结合上文可知,第一段应该写 Jared 爬上树,并且在 Jessica 的帮助
      或者鼓励下合力成功救助被困小猫的过程。在此过程中,两人应该有语言、神情或者动作的互动。第
      一段结尾处应该以互动结束。第二段紧扣“Frm that mment n”的时间节点,重点叙述在本学期的继续
      接触中,两人互相发现对方的优点,最终培养友谊的故事。如果逻辑不合理,酌情扣 3-5 分。
