Have yu ever nticed hw sme peple seem t handle difficulties calmly while thers let small prblems ruin their entire day? This difference ften cmes dwn t hw we respnd t challenges. American scial psychlgist Len Festinger prpsed a famus thery later knwn as “Festinger’s Law”, which states that10 percent f life’s events are beynd yur cntrl, but 90 percent is within yur cntrl.
T explain this, let’s examine tw events. First, imagine a business prfessinal wh has an imprtant presentatin. On the way t wrk, they spill cffee n his shirt. If he reacts with frustratin, rushes angrily, and arrives hurriedly, his presentatin may suffer due t his distracted state. Nw, cnsider an alternative respnse: he calmly cleans up, changes clthes, and uses the extra time in transit t review his ntes. The initial prblem is the same, but the utcmes differ dramatically because f his reactins.
The influences f Festinger’s Law extend beynd individual situatins t interpersnal relatinships as well. In family cnflicts, fr instance, an unpleasant respnse t a minr disagreement can increase tensins, while a patient, understanding apprach ften leads t reslutin. Similarly, in team prjects, hw members respnd t setbacks — whether with blame r cnstructive prblem-slving — can determine the grup’s ultimate success.
What makes this principle particularly valuable is its universal applicability. Whether dealing with academic pressures, wrkplace (challenges, r persnal relatinships, the cmmn thread is that ur reactins ften matter mre than the prblems themselves. By cultivating self-awareness and emtinal 1regulatin, we can significantly imprve ur ability t navigate life’s unavidable difficulties.
Develping this skill requires practice. It invlves pausing befre reacting, assessing situatins bjectively, and cnsciusly chsing prductive respnses. Over time, this apprach becmes habitual, leading t better utcmes and reduced stress. Festinger’s Law ultimately teaches us while we can’t cntrl everything that happens t us, we can always cntrl hw we respnd — and that makes all the difference.
      8. Why des the authr pse a questin at the beginning?

      C. T create a persnal cnnectin t the tpic.
      D. T intrduce Dr. Festinger’s life experiences.
      9. What is the main lessn frm the cffee spill example?

Lepards and hyenas (鬣狗) are cmpetitrs when it cmes t finding fd in East Africa. Usually lepards have the advantage, but a new study fund that peple living nearby can tip the balance tward hyenas. It seems that hyenas are far better at adapting t the presence f peple.
Researchers frm the University f Cpenhagen, in Denmark, studied the behavir f sptted hyenas and lepards living in Udzungwa Muntains Natinal Park, a prtected area f abut 770 square miles in Tanzania. Udzungwa Muntains Natinal Park is surrunded by farmland and human hmes. Peple living in the area dn’t like lepards because they hunt farm animals and can attack humans. Fr this reasn, sme farmers attack lepards, which has caused the animals t stay as far frm peple as pssible.
By cntrast, hyenas nly eat farm animals that are sick r dead, s they are less f a prblem fr humans. The result is that hyenas are nw dminating areas near twns and villages, where mst lcal prey (猎物) animals als live. Greater access t prey has led t a shift in the balance f pwer between the tw species. Hyenas “may even explit (利用) humans as prtectrs against the lepards,” said lead study authr Rasmus W. Havmller.
Male lepards are bigger and strnger than hyenas, but female lepards are smaller. This means fights with hyenas are riskier fr female lepards. T avid fighting with hyenas ver prey, the female lepards have becme active during the day because hyenas are mainly active at night.
Overall, the presence f humans seems t be having a negative impact n the lepards, whereas the hyenas seem t be mre and mre. Havmøller said he hpes this study will encurage peple t cnsider hw they may affect wildlife in areas shared by multiple species. In the future, he said, changes in wilderness areas shuld be made slwly in rder t give animals a chance t adapt.
      12. What caused the balance change accrding t Paragraph 1?
      A. Expansin f farmland areas.B. Human activities near the park.
      C. Increased hunt by lcal peple.D. Natural changes in prey ppulatins.
      13. What des Rasmus W. Havmøller’s statement mean in Paragraph 4?

      B. Farmers shuld prtect lepards frm hyenas’ attacks.
      C. Lepards are smarter than hyenas in finding fd.
      D. Human activities equally harm bth species.
      14. Why are the female lepards mre active in the daytime?
      A. Because they are much strnger and larger in size.
      B. Because male lepards’ ppulatin is smaller.
      C. T catch mre hyenas as the preys.
      D. T avid encuntering the hyenas.
      15. Which is prbably the best title?

故选A项。
