Wild fig trees may prvide an inexpensive, effective way t mnitr mercury (汞) pllutin near small-scale gld mining sites thrughut the Glbal Suth, a recent study suggests.
Published in Frntiers in Envirnmental Science, the analysis lked at whether fig trees can be used as a bimnitring tl near small-scale gld mines. The mines, lcated largely in Suth America, Sutheast Asia and sub-Saharan Africa, use liquid mercury t separate re (矿石) and gld, unleashing high levels f mercury pllutin. The plluted air generated by burning mercury-gld amalgams (合金) t get gld can endanger health in humans and animals. But the industry — largely unregulated — lacks reliable mnitring data, the researchers write.
The researchers intrduced a fast-grwing fig tree that thrives thrughut the trpics. The trees grw annual rings, which is uncmmn amng trpical trees. The researchers analyzed tree cres frm five study sites in Peru’s Madre de Dis regin t determine whether fig trees culd serve as natural indicatrs f mercury pllutin levels in the area. Three f the sites were near small mines, and tw were lcated far away.
Mercury levels in the trees’ rings were “strngly crrelated” with atmspheric mercury levels, the researchers fund, and trees nearest the mines had higher cncentratins (浓度) f mercury in their rings. Passive air sampling cnfirmed the mercury measurements.
The study examined tree rings frm 1941 t 1999 and 2000 t 2019. At tw sites near mdern mining twns where mercury-gld amalgams were burned, the team fund lwer mercury cncentratins in tree rings during the earlier perid, when mining in the area wasn’t well established, and higher levels after gld mining expanded.
Trees prvide “a much mre widely spread and cheaper netwrk f bimnitring” ver decades than typical mnitring f small-scale mines, which fcuses n shrt perids, the researchers write.
“This really ffers a methd that can be emplyed thrughut the Glbal Suth t understand changes in mercury ver time, as well as space indicatrs f mercury.” Jacqueline Gersn, a study authr and assistant prfessr f bilgical and envirnmental engineering in Crnell University’s Cllege f Agriculture and Life Sciences, said in a news annuncement.
      28. What des the underlined wrd “unleashing” in paragraph 2 mean?
      A. Releasing.B. Detecting.C. Absrbing.D. Reducing.
      29. Why are fig trees frm different sites analyzed?
      A. T figure ut the effect f mercury pllutin.
      B. T test if they can mnitr mercury pllutin.
      C. T study the exact cause f mercury pllutin.
      D. T see hw they help reduce mercury pllutin.
      30. What can we learn frm the passage?
      A. Tree rings shw lwer mercury levels after mining expanded.
      B. Typical mine mnitring cvers brader areas than tree rings.
      C. Mercury-gld amalgams were burned nly frm 2000 t 2019.
      D. Tree rings ffer a lng-term and cheap way t mnitr mercury.
      31. What is Jacqueline Gersn’s attitude twards using fig trees t mnitr mercury pllutin?
      A. Cncerned.B. Apprving.C. Objective.D. Uninterested.
A 29. B 30. D 31. B
根据第二段中划线词前“The mines, lcated largely in Suth America, Sutheast Asia and sub-Saharan Africa, use liquid mercury t separate re and gld, (这些矿场主要位于南美洲、东南亚和撒哈拉以南非洲,使用液态汞分离矿石和黄金)”及划线词后“high levels f mercury pllutin. The plluted air generated by burning mercury-gld amalgams (合金) t get gld can endanger health in humans and animals.(高水平的汞污染。通过燃烧汞金合金提取黄金时产生的受污染空气,会危害人类和动物的健康)”可知,液态汞被用来分离矿石和黄金,从而释放出高水平的汞污染,故划线词unleashing与A选项Releasing“释放”意义相近。故选A。
根据第三段中“The researchers analyzed tree cres frm five study sites in Peru’s Madre de Dis regin t determine whether fig trees culd serve as natural indicatrs f mercury pllutin levels in the area.(研究人员分析了秘鲁马德雷德迪奥斯地区五个研究地点的树芯,以确定无花果树是否可以作为该地区汞污染水平的自然指标)”可知,研究人员分析来自不同地点的无花果树是为了测试它们是否可以监测汞污染。
根据第六段中“Trees prvide “a much mre widely spread and cheaper netwrk f bimnitring” ver decades than typical mnitring f small-scale mines, which fcuses n shrt perids, the researchers write.(研究人员写道,与典型的小型矿山监测相比,树木在几十年间提供了一个“分布更广、更便宜的生物监测网络”,而典型的小型矿山监测则侧重于短期)”可知,树轮提供了一种长期且廉价的监测汞污染的方法。
根据最后一段中“This really ffers a methd that can be emplyed thrughut the Glbal Suth t understand changes in mercury ver time, as well as space indicatrs f mercury.(这确实提供了一种可以在全球南方各地采用的方法,以了解汞随时间的变化,以及汞的空间指标)”可知,Jacqueline Gersn认为这种方法可以在全球南方各地采用,以了解汞随时间的变化以及汞的空间指标。
      D
Is yur green my green? Prbably nt. What appears as pure green t me is likely t lk a bit yellwish r bluish t yu. Mrever, an bject’s clr may appear differently against different backgrunds r under different lighting. It might naturally lead yu t think clrs are relative t bservers and viewing cnditins, and s nthing has a true clr. But perceptual variatin is misleading. We argue in the bk The Metaphysics f Clrs that clrs are as bjective as temperature.
Peple’s chices vary significantly when asked t pick the “unique green” frm a selectin f clr chips. A gray bject appears darker against a lighter backgrund than a darker ne, and a red apple might lk green r blue under different lighting. These facts dn’t negate the bjectivity f clrs. An apple’s redness remains unchanged even if it appears differently under certain cnditins. In ther wrds, the prperties f an bject are independent f hw they appear t yu.
T determine an bject’s clr, place it beside anther bject under the same lighting and backgrund cnditins. If n differences are detected by bservers, the clrs are cnsidered the same. This ability t match clrs shws their bjectivity is independent f individual perceptin, much like the temperature f water is independent f hw cld it feels t different peple.
In the field f clr science, scientific laws are used t explain hw bjects and light affect perceptin and the clrs f ther bjects. Such laws, fr instance, predict what happens when yu mix clred paints, and when yu lk at clred bjects in varius lighting cnditins. Philsphers like Hilary Putnam argue that if smething is essential t science, it must be real and bjective.

Fr example, sme dam selfish (雀鲷鱼)have ultravilet patterns that can nly be seen by their species, aiding recgnitin and mating while hiding frm predatrs that cannt perceive ultravilet light.
In sum, ur ability t determine whether bjects are clred the same r differently and the essential rles they play in science suggest that clrs are as real and bjective as temperature.

根据文章第一段中的“It might naturally lead yu t think clrs are relative t bservers and viewing cnditins, and s nthing has a true clr. But perceptual variatin is misleading.(这可能会自然地让你认为颜色是相对于观察者和观察条件而言的,所以没有什么东西有真正的颜色。但感知上的变化是具有误导性的。)”可知,人们通常会认为颜色是相对的,即主观的,这是一种误导性的信念。所以关于颜色的误导性信念是颜色通常是主观的。故选B项。
【33题详解】细节理解题。根据文章第三段中的“T determine an bject’s clr, place it beside anther bject under the same lighting and backgrund cnditins. If n differences are detected by bservers, the clrs are cnsidered the same.(为了确定一个物体的颜色,把它放在另一个物体旁边,在相同的照明和背景条件下。如果观察者没有发现差异,则认为颜色相同。)”可知,作者建议在相同条件下进行比较来确定物体的颜色。故选D项。
【34题详解】推理判断题。根据文章第五段“Clrs are als meaningful in the survival and evlutin f animals. Many animals use clrs strategically t send warning signals r attract mates. Fr example, sme dam selfish have ultravilet patterns that can nly be seen by their species, aiding recgnitin and mating while hiding frm predatrs that cannt perceive ultravilet light.(颜色在动物的生存和进化中也具有重要意义。许多动物有策略地使用颜色来发出警告信号或吸引配偶。例如,一些雀鲷鱼具有只能被其物种看到的紫外线模式,有助于识别和交配,同时躲避无法感知紫外线的捕食者。)”可知作者提到雀鲷鱼是为了证明颜色在动物生存和进化中具有重要意义这一观点,也就是证明前面提出的关于颜色具有客观性的论点。故选D项。
【35题详解】主旨大意题。文章开篇提到“Is yur green my green? Prbably nt. What appears as pure green t me is likely t lk a bit yellwish r bluish t yu.(你眼中的绿色是我的绿色吗?可能不是。在我看来是纯绿色的东西,在你看来可能有点偏黄或偏蓝。)”,描述了不同人对颜色感知可能不同这一现象,后文展开论述,如第二段中的“An apple’s redness remains unchanged even if it appears differently under certain cnditins. In ther wrds, the prperties f an bject are independent f hw they appear t yu.(即使苹果在某些条件下看起来不同,它的红色仍然不变。换句话说,物体的属性与它们在你眼中的样子无关。)”和第三段中的“This ability t match clrs shws their bjectivity is independent f individual perceptin, much like the temperature f water is independent f hw cld it feels t different peple.(这种匹配颜色的能力表明它们的客观性独立于个人的感知,就像水的温度独立于不同人对它的寒冷感觉一样。)”,最后一段得出结论“In sum, ur ability t determine whether bjects are clred the same r differently and the essential rles they play in science suggest that clrs are as real and bjective as temperature.(总之,我们确定物体颜色是否相同或不同的能力,以及它们在科学中发挥的重要作用,表明颜色和温度一样真实和客观。)” 故选项B(绿色就是绿色。)
