Many marine species (海洋物种) depend n specific rutes t migrate (迁徙). The rutes ffer these seafaring travellers the right cnditins, at the right time f year, t guide them thrugh the ceans. The Great Lakes—Ontari, Hurn, Michigan, Erie and Superir—are five freshwater giants. They span acrss eight US states and tw Canadian prvinces.

●Lake Ontari
This lake has the smallest surface area at 7,336 square miles. Three dams (大坝) cntrl the flw f water dwnstream and include lcks s bats can enter frm the Atlantic.
●Lake Hurn
This is the secnd largest lake by surface area in the system and hme t Manitulin Island, the wrld’s largest freshwater island.
●Lake Michigan
It is jined t Lake Hurn by the five-mile-wide Straits (海峡) f Mackinac, thugh they are still classed as tw separate bdies.
●Lake Erie
With a depth f 64 metres, this is the shallwest f the Great Lakes. It is generally the warmest, but als gets frzen mre quickly than the thers.
●Lake Superir
At 406 metres deep, the distance frm the lake’s surface t its deepest pint is abut the same as the length f fur ftball pitches.

Cvering an area f 94,250 square miles, these huge bdies f water take up mre than ne-fifth f the wrld’s ttal freshwater. The Great Lakes prvide drinking water fr mre than 40 millin peple, imprtant shipping rutes fr mre than 800 cean ships, and keep a rich ecsystem fr fishing and agriculture. They als supprt wildlife, the natinal ecnmy and the envirnment.
