I retired frm teaching tw years ag and nw wrk with a nn-prfit rganizatin where everything is dne in a virtual envirnment, which brings great cnvenience and efficiency t wrk. I knew frm the beginning that the technical aspects f the virtual wrkplace wuld be challenging fr me. I had a lt t learn abut telecnferencing and using virtual flders instead f file cabinets. Several mnths ag, as I suggested, the team decided t lk fr ways t make the virtual wrking envirnment mre persnal. While ur wrk place is virtual, the peple we wrk with aren’t. We started ur staff meetings with a brief sharing f “news and celebratins”, varying frm celebrating persnal and prfessinal accmplishments t annuncements abut getting a new puppy. We recently instituted a “Weekly Team Brief” — an nline newsletter t help us share and stay infrmed f any nvel develpments in ur respective initiatives.
I’ve als develped a few reminders t help me stay real and persnal in a virtual wrd. I call these the “three R’s” — reach ut, respnd, request. Firstly, I make a pint f reaching ut t team members frequently. It’s smetimes just a “checking in” with a shrt email, but I als call fairly ften, which I find strengthens a relatinship mre than email threads. Then, I respnd t emails with respect and warmth. I try t engage a listening ea r befre respnding, which I think is a frm f respect. I als try t include a tuch f warmth in my respnse. After all, it’s a persn — nt a machine — that I’m respnding t. Plus, I request the pinins and supprt frm my teammates. Cnsequently, I’ve fund the entire team are energized by supprting each ther.
I nw feel cnnected with my team members in bth a prfessinal and persnal way. While ur wrkplace remains virtual, the relatinships are real.
24. What was beynd the writer’s expectatin?

Earlier this year, analysis f a 100-ft-deep sediment (沉积物) cre frm the Antarctic cean flr revealed signs f a rainfrest that thrived there 90 millin years ag. Nw, scientists have uncvered an even mre recent sign f the cld cntinent’s warm past: a fssilized frg dating t rughly 40 millin years ag.
This fssil frg is the first ever discvered in Antarctica. Prir digs have unearthed the remains f less familiar-lking ancient amphibians (两栖动物), but nne with such a direct evlutinary thrugh-line t creatures that walk r hp. The ancient frg’s anatmy (结构) is very similar t a living family f frgs which live in damp, mild frests in Chile. “It lked like tday’s frgs. It was rather small but this is in the range f the living nes,” Thmas Mörs, study c-authr, tld CNN.
“During the life f this frg, Antarctica was full f plants and animals, sme f which have als been discvered n Seymur Island, the area that prduced the frg fssil,” Mörs said t CNN. “My guess is that Antarctica was a rich and diverse place. We have nly fund a percentage f what lived there.” Scientists were able t make such a precise cnnectin t living frgs because the fssil frg’s skeletn (骨骼) included a skull and a particularly useful hip (髋) bne, which is the mst typical part f a frg skeletn.
The warm climatic time helps scientists pin dwn hw quickly Antarctica develped frzen sheets f ice. Mörs said, “This frg is ne mre indicatin that in that time it was still a suitable habitat fr cld-blded animals like reptiles and amphibians.” The new research estimates Antarctica’s highest mnthly average temperatures 40 millin years ag wuld have been rughly 56 degrees Fahrenheit. Nt quite beach weather, but warm enugh fr these ancient frgs.
Frgs in Antarctica may seem mysterius, but humanity’s crazy use f fssil fuels is bringing the planet clser t that ancient climate. That’s the last time atmspheric CO2 was as high as it is tday, averaging arund 407 ppm. Jane Francis, directr f the British Antarctic Survey, said, “I call them the last frests in Antarctic. They were grwing at abut 400 ppm CO2, s this may be where we are ging back t, with ice sheets melting at times, which may allw plants t clnize again.”
32. The discvery f the fssilized frg helped scientists t believe ________.
A. Antarctica is nt always a cld cntinent
B. a rainfrest existed in Antarctica 90 millin years ag
C. Antarctica’s rainfrest ended much later than they thught
D. the ancient amphibians’ fssils als exist in sediment cre f Antarctica
33. What d we knw abut the ancient amphibians dug previusly?
A. They are f great archaelgical value.B. They resemble tday’s frgs in Chile in anatmy.
C. They are cmpletely strange t scientists.D. They have n cnnectin with the new discvery.
34. What des the underlined phrase “pin dwn” in Paragraph 4 refer t?
A. Find ut.B. Becme interested in.
C. Cast dubt n.D. Lk thrugh.
35. What can we infer frm what Jane Francis said?
A. The use f fssil fuels shuld be limited.
B. The Antarctica is getting plluted badly.
C. The carbn dixide in atmsphere is increasing.
D. The ice sheets in Antarctica are melting cnstantly.
