A line f peple are disappearing, ne by ne, int a hedgerw (灌木树篱) n a hillside near Aylesbury,
England. Hidden inside the thick hedgerw, under the spreading branches f a tree, is a spacius hle, with the
shwer head fixed t the tree’s trunk.
As the benefits f spending time in green spaces are well-dcumented, peple like Tny Langfrd see a
beneficial pprtunity. Thus he created this “hedge shwer”, s campers n his farm can enjy ht shwers while
being lst in nature. Tday he’s shwing a grup f 15 lcal farmers hw this is taking shape there, frm
cmmunity festivals t “nature bathing” walks.
Eddie Rixn, a third-generatin farmer at Lpemede Farm near Thame, is anther. He tk ver the beef farm
10 years ag, but in 2019 there was a serius disease utbreak in the cattle. With such a large field left
unprductive, he had t reassess its future. When a teacher at his daughters’ frest schl apprached him abut
setting up an art centre last year, he realised he culd launch an art frest schl t make full use f the field. “Nw
we have the art frest schl here and we’re making abut 6,000 a year,” Rixn says. “Nt nly am I increasing the
bidiversity here, but I’m increasing the scial and cmmunity aspect f educating children—and ecnmically it’s
      wrking.
Meanwhile, Rixn is delighted that the farm is at the heart f the cmmunity again. He grew up reading
cmics that shwed farmers shuting: “Get ff my land!” “We’ve kind f switched that t get n ur land, ” he
laughs. But this isn’t a free-fr-all. Rixn has a cde f cnduct fr visitrs, and sme areas remain ut f bunds
fr safety reasns. He’s als using technlgy t pen up the farm remtely, including installing cameras in wl
bxes, which allw lcal schlchildren t watch wl’s chicks withut disturbing their nests.
“Often, there’s a farm gate which is clsed with a sign saying: ‘Beware f the dg’ r whatever,” says
Langfrd. “I’m thinking — hw can we pen that farm gate?”
      4. Why did Tny Langfrd create the “hedge shwer”?
      A. T prmte lcal cmmunity festivals.
      B. T dcument the benefits f green spaces.
      C. T attract mre farmers t his farm.
      D. T ffer campers a natural shwer experience.
      5. What led Eddie Rixn t establish the art frest schl?
      第 5页/共 18页
      A. A teacher’s suggestin abut an art center.
      B. His daughters’ interest in frest educatin.
      C. The need t reuse unprductive farmland.
      D. The desire t expand his cattle farm.
      6. What can be inferred abut Rixn’s management f visitr access t his farm?

Backpackers are all t familiar with the uncmfrtable burden f a heavy bag, but scientists are investigating
methds t lighten the lad. A recent study by a Chinese research team intrduced a backpack design that
significantly reduces the amunt f energy required by the user t carry it.
Typically, as a persn takes a step, the lad inside their backpack ften shifts up and dwn, pushing against the
inside f the backpack with extra frce, which can make the bag feel heavier than it actually is. “A backpack
capable f minimizing these frces addresses a real pain pint fr many peple wh carry heavy lads during
cmmuting, hiking, r running,” says Yanhe Zhu, a researcher at the Harbin Institute f Technlgy. “A prduct
that can reduce this burden while enhancing cmfrt and flexibility wuld likely be very appealing.”
Unlike existing suspensin backpacks that use energy-cnsuming mtrs, Zhu and his team develped ne
that requires almst n external pwer. The backpack uses springs and sticks t balance the lad, while a
mtr-cntrlled dampener (阻尼器) prevents the lad frm hitting the bag’s walls. When the lad mves clse t
the walls, the dampener adjusts t cancel ut the mvement, and the energy it uses is sent back t the mtr. This
means nly a small amunt f pwer is needed t cntrl the system, making it much mre energy-efficient than
ther designs that need extra pwer fr the mtr.
In experiments, vlunteers wre bth a regular backpack and the new design while walking n a walking test
platfrm. The results demnstrated that the new design reduced energy use by ver 11 % cmpared t a
      cnventinal backpack.
Zhu believes this technlgy hlds significant cmmercial ptential, and is interested in explring ways t
      第 6页/共 18页
intrduce it t market. “Our fllwing task will invlve integrating intelligent algrithms (算法) t enable the
suspensin backpack t adjust t a brader range f mvement patterns, such as jumping,” says Zhu.
      8. What is the main issue with traditinal backpacks mentined in the text?
      A. They are t heavy when empty fr mst users.
      B. The lad inside mves vertically, creating extra frce.
      C. They lack mdern aesthetic stylish designs fr cmmuters.
      D. They require peridic mtr frequent replacement f mtrs.
      9. What des the underlined phrase “minimizing these frces” in paragraph 2 refer t?
      A. Reducing the verall weight f the backpack.
      B. Preventing the backpack frm wearing ut quickly.
      C. Decreasing the extra frces caused by lad mvement.
      D. Using lighter materials t make the backpack.
      10. Hw des the new backpack achieve energy efficiency?
      A. By recycling energy thrugh springs and a dampener system.
      B. By using high-pwer mtrs t stabilize the lad.
      C. By eliminating all mechanical cmpnents.
      D. By relying slely n external electrical pwer surces.
      11. What is the research team’s next plan fr the backpack?
      A. T reduce the backpack’s weight further.
      B. T increase the mtr’s pwer fr faster adjustments.
      C. T design mre fashinable styles fr cnsumers.
      D. T blend smart algrithms fr diverse mvements.

Research led by eclgist Bart Hekstra f the University f Amsterdam shws that birds are affected by the
      mass use f firewrks n New Year’s Eve up t a distance f 10 km (6 miles) away.
With data frm weather radars and bird cunts, an internatinal team f researchers revealed hw many birds
take ff immediately after the start f the firewrks, at what distance frm firewrks this ccurs and which species
grups mainly react. “Birds take ff as a result f an acute flight respnse due t sudden nise and light. We already
knew that many water birds react strngly, but nw we als see the effect n ther birds thrughut the
Netherlands,” says eclgist Bart Hekstra f the University f Amsterdam. In the scientific jurnal Frntiers in
      第 7页/共 18页
Eclgy and the Envirnment, the researchers therefre argue fr large firewrks-free znes.
Last year, ther researchers at IBED discvered that geese are s affected by firewrks that they spend
averagely 10% f time lnger lking fr fd than nrmal during at least the next 11 days. They apparently need
that time t restre their energy t their frmer cnditin, after fleeing frm the firewrks.
Because 62% f all birds in the Netherlands live within a radius f 2.5 km f inhabited areas, the
cnsequences f firewrks are high fr all birds thrughut the cuntry. “Flying requires a lt f energy, s ideally
birds shuld be disturbed as little as pssible during the cld winter mnths. Measures t ensure this are especially
imprtant in pen areas such as grasslands, where many larger birds spend the winter. The effects f firewrks n
birds are less prnunced near frests and semi-pen habitats. In additin, smaller birds such as tits and finches live
there, which are less likely t fly away frm disturbance.”
The authrs argue fr firewrks-free znes in areas where large birds live. Hekstra: “These buffer znes
culd be smaller in areas where light and sund travel less far, such as near frests. Furthermre, firewrks shuld
mainly be lit at central lcatins in built-up areas, as far away frm birds as pssible. It wuld be best fr birds if
we mved twards light shws withut sund, such as drne shws r decrative firewrks withut very lud
      bangs.”
      12. Which type f birds is mst significantly impacted by firewrks?
      A. Waterbirds and larger species in pen habitats.
      B. Small birds living near dense frest habitats.
      C. Migratry birds in highly ppulated urban areas.
      D. Birds active during daytime fraging perids.
      13. Why d geese require extended time hunting fr fd after firewrks?
      A. T adapt t unfamiliar new habitats.
      B. T avid densely human-ppulated areas.
      C. T cmpensate fr energy lst during flight respnses.
      D. T match their migratin timing with ther bird species.
      14. What is the researchers’ attitude tward replacing firewrks with drne shws?
      A. Supprtive. B. Skeptical. C. Neutral. D. Critical.
      15. What is the passage mainly abut?
      A. A cmparisn f varius bird habitats.
      B. The challenges birds face during harsh winter mnths.
      第 8页/共 18页
      C. The cultural significance f New Year’s Eve firewrks.
      D. The eclgical effects f firewrks n birds and prpsed slutins.
