Fr many years, Bruce Bexler dreamed f ging where n human had gne befre. He wanted t cut a path thrugh unexplred lands and discver rare, extic (adj.奇异的)species.
That might sund like an impssible dream, but Bexler turned it int a reality.
In December 2015, he and a team f Australian and American scientists ventured(v. 冒险) int an islated trpical rain frest n the island f New Guinea. They were the first peple ever t enter the mist-cvered regin. “As time was limited, we were drpped in by helicpter. Once we were n the grund, there were n trails anywhere; it was really hard t get arund, ” Bexler says.
Within minutes f landing, the team sptted a black chicken-like bird with strange range skin hanging frm its neck. The scientists sn determined that the unusual creature was a type f hneyeaters—the first new bird species t be sighted n New Guinea in 60 years.
The hneyeater wasn’t the nly surprise fr the scientists. They discvered mre than 40 previusly unknwn plant and animal species—13 birds f paradise, 20 frgs, fur butterflies, and five palms. “We were like kids in a candy stre,” Bexler recalls. “Everywhere we lked, we saw amazing things we had never seen befre.”
The newfund species didn’t shy away frm the scientists. Tw lng-nsed echidnas—primitive egg-laying mammals—let the visitrs pick them up and take them back t camp t study them. An echidna lks like a hedgehg(n.刺猬) and is als called a spiny(adj.多刺的) anteater.
Bexler thinks the animals weren’t scared because they had never seen humans befre. “In almst all parts f New Guinea, animals are hunted fr fd, and because f this, they are very cautius f peple,” he explains. “This area gives scientists a place where they can g t study the behaviurs f animals that have nt yet learned t be afraid f peple. ”
Scientists believe the area is prbably the largest untuched frest in Asia. Lcal peple called Kwerba hunt and cllect plants frm the uter-edges f the frest but tld Bexler that nt even their ancestrs had gne s far int the wds. The wded area is apprximately a 10-day walk frm the nearest village.
Bexler and his team did nt have enugh time during the expeditin t study the area cmpletely. They hpe t return and expect t recrd many mre undiscvered species. “We just scratched the surface,” Bexler says. “Anyne wh ges there will cme back with a mystery.”
Which wrd can best describe Bruce Bexler?
      A. Adventurus.B. Cautius.C. Optimistic.D. Careful.
What des Bruce Bexler mean by saying “We were like kids in a candy stre”?
They didn’t have enugh fd and were hungry.
They were very excited abut what they saw.
They were misbehaving like naughty children.
They knew that if they kept searching, they’d find sugar in the frest.
What can we cnclude abut the area Bruce Bexler explred?
The best way t explre the area is by helicpter.
The lcals live in the centre f the frest.
The area still cntains many plants and animals unknwn t science.
The lcals are unwilling t allw the scientists t enter the deep wds.

Abut six years ag I was eating lunch in a restaurant in New Yrk City when a wman and a yung by sat dwn at the next table. I culdn’t help verhearing parts f their cnversatin. At ne pint the wman asked, “S, hw have yu been?” And the by --- wh culd nt have been mre than 7 r 8 years ld ---replied, “Frankly, I’ve been feeling a little depressed lately.”
This incident stuck in my mind because it cnfirmed my grwing belief that children are changing. As far as I can remember, my friends and I didn’t find ut we were “depressed” until we were in high schl.
The evidence f a change in children has increased steadily in recent years. Children dn’t seem childlike anymre. Children speak mre like adults, dress mre like adults and behave mre like adults than they used t. Whether this is gd r bad is difficult t say, but it is certainly different. Children as they nce were n lnger exists. Why?
Human develpment is based nt nly n innate bilgical states, but als n patterns f access t scial knwledge. Mvement frm ne scial rute t anther usually invlves learning the secrets f the new status. Children have always been taught adult secrets, but slwly and in stages: traditinally, we tell sixth graders things we keep hidden frm fifth graders.
In the last 30 years, hwever, a secret-revelatin machine has been installed in 98 percent f American hmes. It is called televisin. Televisin passes infrmatin indiscriminately t all viewers alike, be they children r adults. Unable t resist the temptatin, many children turn their attentin frm printed texts t the less challenging, mre vivid mving pictures.
Cmmunicatin thrugh print, as a matter f fact, allws fr a great deal f cntrl ver the scial infrmatin t which children have access. Reading and writing invlve a cmplex cde f symbls that must be memrized and practiced. Children must read simple bks befre they can read cmplex materials.
Accrding t the authr, feeling depressed is .
      A. a sure sign f a mental prblem in children
      B. a mental state present in all humans, including children
      C. smething that can’t be avided in children’s mental develpment
      D. smething hardly t be expected in a yung child
Traditinally, a child is suppsed t learn abut the adult wrld .
thrugh cnnectin with scietyB. gradually and under guidance
      C. naturally withut being taughtD. thrugh watching televisin
Accrding t the authr, that tday’s children seem adultlike results frm .
      the widespread influence f televisin
the pr arrangement f teaching cntent
the fast pace f human scientific develpment
      the rising standard f living
What des the authr think f cmmunicatin thrugh print fr children?
It enables children t gain mre scial infrmatin
It develps children’s interest in reading and writing.
It helps children t read and write well.
It can cntrl what children are t learn.
What des the authr think f the change in tday’s children?
He feels their adultlike behavir is s funny
He thinks the change wrth ur attentin
He cnsiders it a rapid develpment
He is extremely upset abut it
      D
Rughly 42% f Americans are nearsighted tday, cmpared t 25% in 1971. The Wrld Health Organizatin predicts that abut half f the wrld’s ppulatin will have nearsightedness by 2050. It’s apparent that ur eyesight is becming increasingly pr, but researchers are nly nw beginning t understand why.
Generally a childhd phenmenn, nearsightedness happens when the eyeball grws t lng frm frnt t back, taking n mre f an val (n.椭圆形) shape rather than a sphere (n.球形). Eyes have a “stp signal” s that they grw crrespnding with the head, explains Gregry Schwartz, an assciate prfessr at Nrthwestern University. Hwever, that signal can be interrupted by genetic and envirnmental factrs, which leads t ur eyeballs grwing a bit t much, leading t far-ff bjects lking ut f fcus. Signs that yu might have nearsightedness als include headaches, as well as eye stress and tiredness when ding certain activities such as driving r playing sprts.
The increased use f screens, mst f which are high cntrast, like black text n a white page, r light text n a dark backgrund, verstimulating ur eyes, causing mre eye grwth in children and less time spent utdrs are t blame. A 2017 study published in JAMA Ophthalmlgy fund a cnnectin between increased natural light expsure and a decrease in nearsightedness, particularly in children and yung adults. Expsure t natural light stimulates dpamine( 刺激多巴胺的分泌), a chemical which helps regulate nrmal grwth and develpment f the eyeball. Indr lighting desn’t d the trick.
Mst peple’s visin will stabilize in their teens, but sme peple develp nearsightedness later in life, typically between ages 20 and 40. Pr eyesight isn’t the nly dwnside; peple with nearsightedness are at a higher risk f develping eye issues as they age. That’s why regular eye exercise is crucial.
What is the functin f the figures in paragraph 1?
T draw the attentin f WHO.B.T intrduce the research methds.
C.T explain the causes f nearsightedness. D.T illustrate the seriusness f nearsightedness.
What happens t the eyeballs f nearsighted children?
They are ut f shape.B.They grw int a sphere.
C.They match the grwth f heads.D.They distinguish far-ff bjects easily.
What is the main idea f paragraph 3?
      The veruse f screens.B.The causes f nearsightedness. C.The benefits f prtecting eyes.D.The influence f expsure t light.
What might the authr cntinue talking abut?
      Eye issues f ageing.B.The ways t exercise eyes. C.Key factrs t affect eyesight.D.The dwnside f nearsightedness.

由第一段首句“A few days later, Jim received an unexpected call.” 和第二段首句“ Tim was prmted(被提升) t manager f Andrew’s cffee shp sn.”可知,第一段开头语提到的电话应是钱包的主人或者是 Andrew 打来的,并且 Jim 获得一份咖啡店的工作。结合续写两段开头语和文中伏笔信息( his wn experience wrking part-time at a cffee shp during cllege 和 bring yu unexpected gd luck),可构建问题链,丰富续写情节:
