Tw thusand years ag, the ancient Rman city f Caesarea had the largest harbr n the eastern cast f the Mediterranean Sea. It was a wnder f engineering fr its time. Then disaster struck. Written recrds say a huge wave destryed the harbr. What kind f wave caused it? Did it ally happen? N ne had ever fund the evidence f the wave... until nw.
Dr Gdman is part f a team f scientists studying samples at Caesarea t figure ut what happened in the past. A sample is taken by striking a tube int the seaflr. When the tube is pulled up, it cntains sediments (沉淀物) that have cllected n the seaflr fr hundreds r thusands f years. Lking dwn thrugh the mixture f sand, stnes and ther sediments is like lking back in time.
That’s what Dr. Gdman was ding when she fund smething astnishing. It was a layer (层) f shells — all came frm the time the harbr was destryed. Dr. Gdman knew this shell layer had a stry t tell.
Usually, shells are part f the mixture f sediments cllected n the seaflr. A shell layer is as thin as yur finger. Yet Dr. Gdman was staring at a layer nearly 1 meter thick! Almst all the shells were brken.
The thick layer f brken shells meant a sudden, pwerful event swept these shells int the area. The brken shells were evidence that a huge wave really did destry the harbr. Dr. Gdman culd even tell the directin f the wave frm the way the shells lined up.
Here’s what Dr. Gdman thinks happened. First, an earthquake struck nrth f Caesarea alng the cast. Energy frm the mvement f rck during the earthquake caused a tsunami. This huge wave raced acrss the sand and kicked up shells alng the way and brke them int pieces. Finally, the wave crashed int the harbr and destryed it.
Dr. Gdman plans t gather evidence fr ther ancient tsunamis alng the Mediterranean cast. This will help her predict what areas are likely t be struck by future tsunamis. Then peple can avid building in these areas.
